Hello everyone,

I'm a Canadian resident considering a GI path fellowship for 2012; I'm hoping to share thoughts and experiences with others who are also applying this year and in the future. I have a few questions and would appreciate any thoughts 🙂

1) Looking over a thread from 1-2 years ago, it seems that GI fellowships are really competitive, almost on par with Derm fellowships :scared: Is that still the case?

2) Is it standard to have USCAP/ASCP/CAP abstract presentations on your CV? I'm busting my ass to get a couple of abstracts in by the October deadline; only have 1 peer-reviewed article published in a journal and a couple of case reports presented as posters at our national meeting.

3) I'm doing a few electives at top tier US programs in the winter, as well as one elective in March. Is the March elective too late? I.e. will the program already have a decision with regards to a fellow made by then given that the applications are due in January? Along the same lines, when are interviews and offers sent out?

4) Is it possible to secure a fellowship outside of the regular pool (i.e. an additional position) if I'm able to secure external funding?

Thanks a lot in advance.

1. No.
2. Yes, but this is standard for any good fellowship.
3. March may be too late. Many programs have a fellow lined up 18 months prior to the start date. Some do not though. Doing a rotation in March can't hurt you.
4. Yes, this may be possible since GI is not an accredited fellowship.

If you're a Canadian resident looking for an American GI path fellowship, the deck is stacked against you. Just liking GI isn't going to cut it unless you have a great personal relationship with a fellowship director. At least, that is what I would suspect.
