I am a final year ophtho resident in Canada and I am interested in a Glaucoma Fellowship starting in 2005. Does anyone have an idea as what would be considered the best glaucoma fellowships with good clinical and surgical experience?

Any help appreciated.

Best Regards

I think most, if not all, would agree that Bascom Palmer has the best glaucoma fellowship in the country right now and in the recent past & near future. Excellent clinical as well as surgical experience.

Duke and Wills have good glaucoma fellowship as well.

Jules Stein has a decent one as well.

Best of luck in your search/application... 🙂

What about New York Eye and Ear?

I think Iowa has a good program too. Surgical volume is average with excellent didactics and pathology.
Sorry, Andrew. 😛

Yes, I agree Iowa does have an great glaucoma fellowship as well. Especially, if you're interested in being in the forefront of genetic aspect of glaucoma, you couldn't go to a finer place than Iowa. Iowa also seems to have most of the best Goldmann perimetry technicians in the world!
Dr. Alward is one of the most respected glaucoma specialist in the field.
For most people, Iowa City seems to be a downside.

I have heard differing opinions on New York Eye & Ear's fellowship program - but I will have to leave it at that. 😎

Bascom Palmer fellowship is so great because of the fact that you get to work with so many great minds of the field - they are up to SEVEN full-time glaucoma clinical faculty PLUS 2 part-time faculty who have helped the department start up pediatric glaucoma clinic. Miami is also not a bad place to spend a year of your life... I believe only other place in the country where you may get better pediatric glaucoma experience could be Duke but I was told that the fellows there do not get to work with the pediatric glaucoma specialist (someone correct me, if I'm wrong). Surgical volume is abundant - most by far, I would think.
