Hey everyone,

Interesting read by the NEJM... However, is it overly optimistic? I get the sense that the numbers are a bit inflated when it comes to this future demand vs availability of physicians. I get different numbers from multiple articles (some .coms some .orgs) but this one I am more inclined to believe given it is coming from the NEJM (very respected source). I would like to see if @Goro can offer his insight here...

Thanks!

You really think you're the first person to post about this 1+ year old article?

The whole argument depends on the continued favoritism of US medical graduates over international medical graduates who are otherwise equivalently qualified.

I have to read and mull over.

Lol, well I just ran into it so...
Let me introduce you to the search function, which can be utilized to determine if, in fact, your incredibly original idea or article is as fresh as you think it is.

Beaten that article to death a dozen times, I refuse to do it again.

It's lobbying and PR efforts being pushed by Caribbean schools so that when a crunch comes the public is on their side and they have a seat at the bargaining table for a fix.

Seems legit. I don't put it past them tbh

An oldie but a goodie! My favorite IMG pitch! If you can read halfway through the "article" without laughing you're a kinder soul than me

Why U.S. Healthcare System Needs More Foreign Medical Grads, As Told By A Millennial Med Student

That is one of the worst pieces of garbage I have ever read. It even has spelling errors in it. She says there is a primary care shortage, but then in the next breath says all residencies should be opened up to carribean graduates.

My favorite was this:

"Yet, this idea of “Caribbean” med student versus “U.S.” med student needs to be eradicated from our vocabulary. We are all medical students, one in the same, no one better than the other or short of amazing set out for one purpose only to make a difference. Therefore, this stigma of “Caribbean” as odd or not good enough, second chance, or plan B needs to be permanently removed from one’s vocabulary."

If you don't want to be looked down upon, maybe you shouldn't accept students who can't pass the MCAT

I agree it was very poorly written. It had a sense of entitlement which I truly didn't like. I am all for busting ass and making it, but you truly do have to understand your predicament coming from the Carib... I know I do now. Time is the best teacher.
