Graduating from dental school soon and would like to know: If you didn't do HPSP, would you have still chosen to become a military dentist? What is the daily life of a military dentist like? Are we deployed to other countries? Are AEGD programs only for those in HPSP? Do you feel like you learned a lot as a military dentist or is it better to just find a good private practice? I'm sticking with general dentistry

Have you talked with a recruiter? It might be hard to come in as a direct accession, as it’s called. The military is cutting the number of dentists. They may not even have any openings for you.

There are plenty of threads on here that discuss life as a military dentist, so check around.

I actually had a similar question. What about joining the national guard right after dental school? I’m still in dental school, just wondering if that’s a viable option.

you can certainly join reserves/national guard

the downside is you will he activated about 1-2wkend per month to do alot of exams and operative nothing else.

You will not be eligible to apply to military residencies or will have a chance to get deployed else where outside of US continent

Reserve component will have more likelihood of going to hotfills and needed areas if the demand becomes a necessity for the mission.

Thanks for the response! That sounds like what I would want to do so that my family doesn’t have to move around a ton.

Reserves component works a little differently when calculating retirement.

Visit this link to learn about it: Reserve Retirement

Your active duty time will be translated to the point system and you have to be a certain point level beyond to be eligible for retirement

My 4 years at the USAF were very valuable. Although I started with them 22 years ago, I believe most military programs still provide tuition assistance. I did not do any residencies but I wished I had gone to the 2 year AEGD-2 program. I was so burnt of with school and at that time I was scared off. I also heard that the main program was with many other dental residencies all competing for specialty work. So in my belief, the general dentist may get stuck doing amalgam cuspal coverages instead of endo, pros, OS, etc. With that in mind, I did my informal "residency" in my 4 years and tried to learn as much as possible from my expert colleagues. We had this one Comprehensive Dentist (completed the AEGD-2 at a smaller base without specialists) and he was my idol. He could do apico, perio, oral, any surgeries, pros, ortho, etc as good as the specialists. He knew all peer reviewed dental specialty journals. The other doctors would ask him about their complex cases and he would know how to manage them. That experience help me land a great job at a corporate DMO doing only endo at nice pay with very little stress. I had a few dentists including my mentor endodontist ask me about their complex cases and to take a look at suspicious oral lesions and I was so flattered.
