Hello all! I am delighted to be accepted to medical school and know that life will get crazy busy before I know it, but right now, as a nontrad who is working, but not in school, I'm going a little stir-crazy! I know we are told not to study before school starts, but what can I be doing that will move me forward on this journey? My financial aid paperwork is already filed, it's too early to look for apartments, and I don't have many hobbies because between applications/interviews/volunteering plus teaching full time, I've been too busy to do anything else. Now, I'm getting awfully tired of Netflix and video games. Any suggestions about books to read, other things that will get me in a better position before school starts?

lol, didn't know that "stir-crazy" was an actual phrase until reading this post and looking it up on google.

when i first saw the thread title, i thought it would be about a person who's been eating too much stir-fry 🤣🤣🤣

anyhow, im in the same boat as OP, so I'm also curious to see what people have to say :corny:

#1 It is never too early to look at apartments. Maybe not to commit to, but certainly to plan out areas and cost of living, unless you already living in the same city.
#2 Do not study before school starts. It is a complete and total waste of time.
#3 The best part about hobbies is that they can be started at any time. Find some new ones. Getting lost in an application process/school is a recipe for burnout.
#4 Travel, if not, then explore locally before you leave whatever city you are currently in.
#5 There are book threads on SDN, use search.

Make a bucket list and do what you can. I went skydiving recently. What a rush!

I vote either:
starting a hobby (i.e. martial arts, gymnastics, chess, art, something like that),
go out meeting people (i.e. social dancing, local events, etc),
learn something (language, craft, trade, computer programming, stats),
or finally, my personal favorite, travel (abroad or micro adventures)

EDIT: Also, focus on your close relationships/ friendships as you want to build a strong foundation for when there is less time to maintain them.
And I agree with the reading suggestion as well.

I think everyone's suggestions so far have been really good. I'm in the same boat and I think, in addition to a few of the things mentioned, I'm going to focus on doing a lot of reading. I figure we won't get much time to read for pleasure in med school so we might as well do some now, and I graduated two years ago so I want to get back into the swing of reading for when we start having to read boat loads of information for class.

I'm a HUGE reader, so I'm re-reading all my favorite series before school starts. I'm currently re-reading the Harry Potter books right now.
I would also suggest keeping up with your pre-med activities. I'm still volunteering at the hospital, but at a reduced rate. I'm also learning to fit exercise and work-outs into my daily schedule.

I'm not working, but time seems to be flying.
