Anyone know of a good book for a 4th year elective rotation in VIR? Searched previous threads for books, but came upon suggested books for diagnostic radiology.

Thanks in advance!

When I did my medical student elective in IR, I used Valji. It is pretty advanced and at the resident level, but it is what my attending recommended.

As a student it is probably more important to understand what IR does and the indications/contraindications for certain procedures rather than getting into the minutia of the procedure itself...

Show an interest in the field and show up early and stay late if you are wanting a letter or something...

P.S. You'll be happy to know a new edition just came out too...2006!

Kudos for trying to search for your answers ahead of time! A lot of people ask the same old questions OVER AND OVER AND OVER again and it gets old. But you are right, there aren't a whole lot of threads on IR books.

Heres what I'd do (basically what I did as a student)-- Go to your library, go to the radiology section and browse the section on interventional radiology. Look at the chapter headings of some of the big text books, look at the pictures, this will give you a good idea of the scope of IR (you'll be surprised how many different kinds of procedures there are...)

As far as books go:

IR Secrets is a great book that will almost fit into your coat pocket. Covers a lot of topics in Q&A form, good amount of pictures, and it includes trivia on the history of IR.

IF YOU ARE MOTIVITED- VIR requisites ($99) covers most major topics but its expensive and geared toward residents (the section on chemoembo is kind of thin, IMO). Borrow it from the library rather than buy it. Haven't read Valji or LaBerge, but I hear they are also great.

As far as a 'how to' book with all the nitty gritty details related to performing the actual procedures and the clinical issues, there is the Handbook of IR procedures (Something like that, by Krishna Kandarpa), it costs $50. Again this is geared toward residents and fellows, borrow it if you can.

My top recommendation- IR secrets.

Good luck-- IR is an awesome field!

As someone who did two advanced clerkships in IR during fourth year, I have to second the recommendation for Kandarpa and Aruny's "Handbook of Interventional Radiologic Procedures." Really tells you what you need to know and is THE book found in angio suites and residents' pockets the world over, although the latest edition to my knowledge was published in 2001. Still gives you all the bread-and-butter and some of your more involved procedures, like TIPS. Not much interventional neurorads, though, if any.

I also found useful the book "Interventional Radiology: a Survival Guide", which gives more of a personable approach (i.e., how to handle a hydrophilic guidewire, etc). Can't quite remember who wrote it. Kessel?
