Hi everyone,

My girlfriend will be starting dental school this fall, and her birthday is coming up too. I was wondering if there was any good gift you guys would suggest getting for a new D1. I know for medical school, a good gift would be a stethoscope for a new med student. Is there anything comprable for a dental student??

Thanks for all your help!

Alex

Well... you could give her some money to be used toward buying her loupes.

1) find out if her dental school has a good bookstore that sells their dental school scrubs, if they do, the get a gift certificate from there for scrubs

2) Get her a gift certificate to www.ecampus.com for her future textbook purchase (believe, everyone will love this)

3) Contact an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in the area of your girlfriend's dental school and ask if you may place an empty jar in his/her office and have them collect "good" teeth (no 3rd molars) for your girlfriend (believe me, your GF will love you for this)

4) An automated blood pressure cuff ($50), your GF can use this during her clinical years (it may be too early for now)

That's all I got for academic related.

I wanted to stay away from the money and gift certificates because I think it might be a little impersonal. But number 3 looks intriguing. Just curious, where would I get this jaw- can you buy anything related to what you're talking about in number 3?

Alex

GFs are really hard to buy presents for, w/ that said, good luck😎.

Im going to suggest you get her a crock-pot b/c she wont have time to make dinner w/ all the studying we're going to have to do.

I think it was a typo. He probably means "jar", not "jaw". Basically help her collect teeth that she'll need in school to practice on.

I don't know if there is an equivalent to a stethoscope for dental students. Since dentistry is so equipment and instrument heavy, a lot if not almost everything should be provided by the school. Sometimes there are non-essentials that make things easier to work on that the school may not provide. Stuff such as loupes, LED/fiberoptic lights, or a portable curing light might come in handy, but I don't know what your budget is.

What school will she be attending? Maybe students at that school would be able to give you better suggestions.

Oops, it was a typo...I meant to type "JAR", not jaw! Any empty jar will do, but preferably a plastic jar because its durability and you can seal it tighter than a glass jar.

Place some listerine, some bleach, and some water in the jaw and the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon (OMFS) should be good to go.

Teeth collected will be used for your GF's dental anatomy and endodontic courses. Depending on her dental school, some dental school do not require their student to collect teeth, but most do. You should contact her dental school and find out. Preferably from a current dental student at her school, SDN here can be a great source.

If you want to do this, then everything is FREE! You can take a picture of the jar sitting on the counter at the OMFS's office and place that picture in a birthday card.

Man, Yah-E, you did it AGAIN? Did you sleep much this week?

LOL

Well, you know how I like jaws....

Dude, all this studying for the Step 1 is using up my neurons!

I like the idea of scrubs as well. Make sure her school allows her to wear any type/color of scrubs before you do this, but I would imagine any girl would love to have a nice set of urbane scrubs for school. They will run you about $35 for one pair.

I would recommend perhaps two gifts - one dental related and one not. I'm a dental student and my boyfriend isn't involved with medicine at all...if he did that, I'd know he knew what I was doing with my life (and what I blabbed about every evening when I come home) but also that he realizes that I like balance and life outside of school.

For the dental part, I'd recommend something unique to first years: the full set of Netter flash cards (she'll need them for gross and most schools don't order them) Other ideas: an electric wax melter so she doesn't have to keep dipping wax in a torch to melt it. (You can get a used one on ebay for $5) or a new one from a dental supplier for $93 (near the bottom, units #40 or 41). OR, you can get a sexy purple mixing bowl when everyone else will have boring, solid green. I have a transparent blue one and I get tons of compliments. (yeah, dental students are nerds.) I mean, any scrubs or instruments you buy won't really be that unique...everyone in her class will have them, and you don't know what the rules in the schools are for equipment.

And then maybe something unrelated, like whatever she uses to de-stress after school (gourmet coffee and a new coffeemaker, a spa/manicure set, a bunch of novels by her favorite authors, fancy booze, season tickets to her favorite team, whatevs!) Good luck! You can always blindfold her and drive her to a spiffy restaurant...

how about some pleasurable items for herself since you won't be there...you don't want her gettin drunk one friday night and sleeping with her lab partner....haha.

This comment is rude and definitely not professional. Think of those who have to live apart based on certain circumstances and how hard it must be before you make such stupid remarks.

Yes sir.

get her a nice coffee maker where you can program it to grind the beans tomorrow morning at 6am or 7am, she will wake up to the smell of fresh coffee and be good to go 🙂

the Netters flash cards are a great idea! Don't buy her wax, my school provided wax, never had to buy any...

Buy her something that' she'll keep ...teeth/cards aren't really that personal gifts.

Buy a nice pen or smoething, get it engraved, or a personal gift....jewelry?
It's your gf for , not your buddy from college.

Ah, but a wax MELTER....that the school won't provide and she'll be all like "look at my wax melter. Hey lab partner, want to trade wax melte - wait - YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!!!" And then she bursts into fits of insane laughter and they carry her away. Good times.

A bit worried about your own SO, eh? Smidge defensive there.

You can't go wrong buying a girlfriend jewelry.

Thinking back to first year, if someone offered to buy me a gift, I would have asked for textbooks, sleep, and for someone to cook, clean and do my laundry.

The nice scrubs might work. A dental gift is totally school dependent. At our school, I never really bought much beyond the required list from our school because everything we needed was mandated by the school to either rent from them or buy from them. I did buy some textbooks beyond the mandated purchase and a new printer bc the required one was crappy.

Someone at our school won a pindex machine at an auction. That was pretty cool to have after hours, although you won't use it until third year and you could just use the school one during business hours. And it would be a totally useless gift if your gf goes to a school where they send out all lab work. When I graduated, I bought one of the official university frames for our oversized diplomas, that would have been a nice gift but is way too far into the future for her.

Touchy subject? Whats the story behind it? 😀 (just kidding... lighten up!)

Get her lingerie from Federicks of Hollywood! 👍

Unless the school she goes to is cool enough to provide electric wax adders to all their students... 😀

If you like having her as your girlfriend I suggest that you forget for a moment that she is a D1 and ALWAYS remember that she is female. You know what to do, now go out and do it.

Buy her a nice vacation (with you) prior to starting dental school....

.... then keep doing that anytime you both have time available.

Not to be pessimistic but professional schools are notorious for ending relationships (including marriages).
I saw this time and again as a student, resident and teacher.... what can I say people are people and we all change through our experiences. . .

good luck 👍

Ha. I knew that remark would come. No story...though I am doing the distance thing and it's definitely a challenge so I feel for others going through the same thing.

Unless she is like me and forgets to empty the coffee out of the insulated caraffe and coffee spills everywhere. Good Idea, I would like it..

Probably the most intelligent comment here.

For now...

That is straight thug talk man! Rivalry in the works..I better revamp my site!

It is actually a good idea...I should make one for my class. Are you the designer or just the SDN marketer? If you are in charge of the website I have some tips to make google-ads more palatable and click worthy. Optimization is the key. PM me if u wish or have time, I know you already started cramming material so you can catch up to the class of 2010 to graduate with us😱

Wizziefiend and wackiezackie get credit for design, I get credit for fundraising (You have no idea how much you can get by begging for change from a class of 143) and coming up with the idea.

Google ads were an afterthought, I'm pretty sure the only clickthroughs we're getting are the 7 classmates who use the site regularly and anxious pre-dents.

I don't care for jewelry and I'm a woman - so don't be so stereotypical and get jewelry.

My wife is a woman and loves jewelry, the only thing is she has to pick it out or at least give me some direction.

If you are willing to spend the money, get her a skull. For a replica you are looking at $150-200. A real skull will set you back about 1K, but it something she can use for the rest of her practicing days.

Give her consistent support and words of encouragement. That is invaluable and won't cost you much money at all.
