Goro's Guide to the DO School Application Process, 2019 ed.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Here's my story... but to be upfront I don't have an MCAT, no idea how well, or bad, I would score if I take it end of September. I currently work in clinical research-been postponing medical school for financial reasons as I'm the main source of income while my husband was working his way into medical school (he just finished first year at a DO school :soexcited: so proud of him). So now I feel it's my turn, but not sure if I actually have a shot into DO schools (no interest in MD). I work in wound care MSG practice and got introduced to Podiatry which I really liked so I applied this cycle to Podiatry school since they waived MCAT for the current application only due to COVID-19.

1. GPAs: Undergrad cGPA 3.33, sGPA 3.1, non-science 3.58
Graduate sGPA 3.89, non-science 4.0 (currently finishing up an online MS degree in clinical research management while working full time)
2. MCAT Score: was planning on preparing/taking it after I finish my Master's degree in August.
3. Shadowing hours & ECs research coordinator for 7 years so tons of hours, at least 10000+ paid healthcare experience, over 500 hours healthcare volunteer hours. 4 research posters presented at wound conferences, 3 publications (cancer research) and one submitted/not published yet related to COVID-19.
4.I applied to NYCPM only since I'm local and got accepted to class 2024, but I deferred enrollment to start January- class 2025

Everyone I work with (MDs/DOs) keep on telling me I should try applying for medical school before committing to Podiatry... I was completely happy with my NYCPM acceptance until ppl started trying to make me consider DO...Can I get an honest advice here?

oops forgot to quote @DO&DPM

Becoming a podiatrist limit your scope of practice enormously compared to being an MD or DO physician. In addition, they are on a pay-scale beneath MDs and DOs.

With that being said:
- If you already know you want to be an orthopod, podiatry is a much easier route than to try and match orthopedic surgery or some such.
- I can’t tell you if you would or wouldn’t get into DO schools without an MCAT score. On the other hand, most podiatry schools would probably accept you as long as you didn’t write your name down and leave; I believe it’s not uncommon for mid-480s to be accepted.
- Regardless of the route, my understanding is that podiatry school is on a similar level of difficulty to bona fide medical school. You will not have an easier time of it regardless of which you choose.

My school will glom onto you in a heartbeat.

BUT, do you want to be a doctor? Medicine is a calling, and DPM is just a different wavelength of that calling. If you're OK with the latter, go for it, and don't look back. Do this for you, not what other people say/think.

@Isoval Thanks for the feedback... I know it's hard to say without an MCAT, I guess I just needed to share my fears and doubts.

My now 2nd year medical student husband looked at my upcoming curriculum for Podiatry and said it's the same as his DO 1st year... which I'm very looking forwards too, but guess my head now is full of co-workers' induced doubt about Podiatry vs. DO

@Goro Thank you for the response and feedback, means a lot to hear someone say that instead of "Eww Podiatry!"... I would do what it takes to be a doctor, just being on the other end of patient care is killing me. I love research so much and I plan to be a heavily research involved doctor whether I do DPM or DO... but I want to be the doctor not just the researcher. I'm torn to whether continue my with my current bliss having a spot in Pod school or if I should invest some more time and money and try for DO/having two months left to get that MCAT done!
Thank you for hearing me out!

I might be biased because I’m a DPM student but if you were happy with your acceptance before anybody said anything you should just run with it. If you truly think you will be happier as a DO then go for it! I got the “eww podiatry” reaction from some friends but it’s my career at the end of the day not theirs. Whether it’s DPM or DO do what will make YOU happy don’t worry about other people.

This is true too at some podiatry schools the curriculum is the exact same as the DO curriculum at the school they are attached to. At other podiatry schools it is a similar and still rigorous curriculum. It’s easier to get in but nearly just as hard to get through. People should consider this when going for DPM. With that said regardless of difficulty MD/DO is always more prestigious.

Het @Goro, I've read your opinion on LUCOM and WCUCOM. If you were an applicant, which one would you chose? Aside from LUCOM'S extreme religious views, how is their matching rates? I have a read a ton of posts about avoiding that school because of that matter, but I haven't read anything about their education and match rates? Which one is better WCUCOM or LUCOM?

WCU is now off my Bad Boy list, as they've cleaned up their act. So, WCU hands down!

I would second this, plus we are helping to start a lot of new residencies in the state, I am pleasantly surprised. Location wise hattiesburg is miles ahead of rural virginia..

I went to Ole Miss for undergrad and am from Big Island (read: RURAL) Virginia.

This is a ridiculous and untrue statement. Lynchburg (I believe that's where LUCOM is located) is a metropolis compared to Hattiesburg. Plus, it's like an hour from Richmond, Charlottesville (where UVA is), and Roanoke. All those places are like NYC compared to literally anything in the state of Mississippi.

I had a friend who went to Lynchburg College and he posted about doing big-city stuff WAAYYYY more than I did in Oxford, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, or even the times I spent in Jackson. Like you have to drive to NOLA or Memphis to have anything comparable. Virginia is East Coast with major big epicenter cities nearby and you wanna say MISSISSIPPI is better lmfao

Lol what? In what world is Lynchburg a metropolis? (Metropolis = LA, NYC, Houston etc.).. It’s population is 80,000 compared to Hattiesburg’s 50,000 plus Hattiesburg is a college town where USM is and that in itself puts it miles ahead of Lynchburg. The closest real big city to Lynchburg is Norfolk/Virginia Beach or Washington DC LOL each are like 3-4 hours away, meanwhile Hattiesburg has nola in 1 hour and the gulf coast beaches and casinos in a hour too. Virginia maybe “East coast” with epicenter if you mean fairfax Virginia but there is absolutely nothing east coast about Lynchburg lol. Anyone with google maps can see how far it is from anything. Plus we haven’t even gotten into the real issues at LUCOM that goro has pointed out lol, even just based on location it’s not a real argument. No one in their right minds thinks that Richmond Virginia(which is actually 2 hours away LOL) has more things to do than the Mississippi gulf cost with beaches and casinos and nola LOL.... Oxford and Tupelo are not Hattiesburg and I can’t believe you didn’t enjoy yourself in a sec college town like Oxford, Oxford itself is better than Lynchburg, like the biggest attraction in Lynchburg is Liberty university LOL...

How old are you? Reading that tirade was like reading a text from my girlfriend when I was in high school....

Anyway, it's super obvious from that... whatever it was that you just wrote... that you've never been to Virginia. Or maybe even never left Mississippi, I don't know. But I've lived in both states and anyone who has ever been to Richmond, Roanoke, VA Beach, DC, or any of the places you mentioned would get a real kick out of claiming the beaches in Mississippi to be more desirable.

As an aside, I loved Ole Miss. And no arguments on the LUCOM front either. But you literally said location alone would give Hattiesburg an advantage, which is utterly ridiculous. I mean, did you really just quote their population size of 50,000 and a college no one has ever heard of as a pro? For all of Liberty's faults, at least it's the largest school in the entire state, giving it the actual title of being a college town. And I didn't even mention Smith Mountain Lake (which is closer to where I'm actually from) as a major spot for recreation.

But anyway, enjoy your super beloved Hattiesburg and please continue to wear masks and socially distance despite your _______ governor deciding COVID is over. I'll let you fill in the blank so I don't get in trouble from the mod squad.

@Goro I'll also say that your comment about VA not being LGBTQ friendly is a bit outdated as my home state is now as blue as CA. Say what you want about Liberty, but Virginia as a whole is very progressive. Which is more than one can say about Mississippi. I can't believe I actually has to type that out.

It would appear that you are, indeed, confused on the red parts of the state. I was born in the reddest part of the state.

In 2020 Lynchburg City voted Biden. The Lynchburg City Council has 5 dems to just 2 GOP. I hate Liberty as much as the next guy... but don't let that hatred conflate what the surrounding area actually values.

What does the governor have to do with the basic fact that Hattiesburg is about the same size and in a much better location to areas where you can actually do stuff as a medical student? Ie New Orleans and the gulf coast? This isn’t a political discussion lol Virginia was literally where a bunch of white suprematists held a rally... lol get a grip dude nobody cares that a city voted Biden, the debate was what is the better location for medical school and that is hands down Hattiesburg due to proximity to you know actual big cities(places that barely qualify and are 2-3 hours away don’t count). Also I guarantee no one has heard of liberty university, are you ***** serious? It’s a god damn right wing Christian school ahaha. Usm has an actual D1 football program... also what exactly is there to do/so special about Richmond Va? Driven by there and it’s dead

Well OP, if you had any doubts about this guy not having a clue, there it is.

I'm guessing you don't follow college football.... I'll let you Google who was #17 on the closing AP top 25 ranking this past season and find out for yourself just how misinformed you've been.

And as for your Richmond comment.... :smack:

OK, but where did I state that VA as a whole anti-gay? What I normally write is that the school might be welcoming, but the environs might be not as welcoming.

Just food for thought, not a Commandment from Mt Sinai. If you know the area and think it's fine, then my concerns are moot.

Lol it was ranked last season for the first time ever lol just checked, I am an avid college football fan even I did not know, meanwhile Brett Favre went to USM, liberty isn’t exactly a well known university, and I doubt honestly anyone knows where/what liberty university is. This discussion wasn’t even about which state is better, it was about what school is in the better overall location, this wasn’t about USM or liberty university, you can be in Nola on burbon street in less than an hour and a half from Hattiesburg, while in an hour and a half from Lynchburg you can be in Charlottesville which is another Hattiesburg or Lynchburg, ie a small city with a college with nothing else to really do or offer haha oh and btw that’s the city where the racist riot occurred which is soo ironic hahaha. Richmond is also two and a half hours away which is a fat drive and isnt exactly New Orleans, I have never heard of Richmond being a place anyone willingly visits to go have fun unless they live there, Washington DC and VA beach are good and have lots to offer but there also like 3-4 hours away so not exactly something you would say as being “close”. This is my logical thinking and it has nothing to do with if the state’s governor is Democrat or Republican or what state is better overall, those are all pointless to this argument.

I absolutely agree, I just thought that @Jack Donaghy took it personally for no reason. Lynchburg is not a metropolis (LOL) and is not particularly a better place than Hattiesburg by any means. But anyone with a phone and Internet can look that up in a matter of seconds. Meanwhile a completely unrelated thing to the argument is Hattiesburg also voted for Biden...

Do you agree with him! Lol? Hattiesburg and Nola is apparently in an OBJECTIVELEY worse location than western rural Virginia( I.e Lynchburg) and you know Richmond(lol)is like ONLY a 3 hour drive which is way better than being like an hour away from nola obviously...this guy rated Richmond as being more “fun” than New Orleans LOL

Hello! I was wondering if the reasons you can't recommend RVU/BCOM/ICOM are because they are for-profit? I read an article about them recently (if linking out to articles isn't allowed, I can edit the link or delete it) and in your opinion, should for-profit DO schools generally be one's last resort? I know some people who are considering going to those schools but their for-profit status makes me wary of recommending them.

I personally think its at least worth an application. I know people don't like that email and don't trust the fact they are for profit, but will have absolutely no impact on your education. RVU is still is a good school, and Ive heard good things about their global track.

Quick tip:

Go for the DO schools in major cities with the chance for away electives to hedge your bets. This is why PCOM is the best DO school. In all seriousness, if you rotate with your MD brethren it will allow you to maintain your DO core values while learning cutting edge medicine. Community hospitals can provide outstanding learning opportunities but do not always give exposure to novel innovations, research opportunities and new modalities.
Why doesn’t Rowan not make your list? It’s only 20 minutes from Philly on the Jersey side??

WCU >>>>>>>>>ARCOM/.
Here's why:
ARCOM required mandatory lecture attendance during the COVID pandemic! And then charged their 4th year rotating students $3000 if they wanted to do an audition rotation outside of their network sites. (see: https://forums.studentdoctor.net/th...sonally-pay-preceptors.1433331/#post-22479749, esp. post #27)

Bcom is for profit, stay away. Wcucom is a much more established school.

May I add PCOM Georgia to the mix?

I am accepted at both WCUCOM and PCOM Georgia and need to make a choice in the next few days. I am leaning towards WCUCOM as I am much further along in the process (scheduled move in July, lease signed, etc.). PCOM Georgia acceptance just recently came about. Based upon initial research the schools are relatively close. I have been reviewing the comlex scores and the match lists.

I am finding it difficult to make a final decision and would welcome guidance.

I really don't have any knowledge of PCOM-GA. Sorry.

What school did you end up going to? The schools are very close overall.

Are there any updates on schools doing better? I applied to CCOM, VCOM, ATSU, NOVA, TUORO-NY and PCOM without reading that you do not like NOVA or TUORO NY
