I know HPSP gets thrown around a lot as a solution for expensive private schools - and I know you were HPSP. But what are your thoughts on the program paying $650K plus stipend for a student? It’s still the US government paying a private school, it’s just coming from a different pot of money (DoD vs DOE).

See my post above. To your point, it really doesn't matter if it's a student (government) loan, or HPSP. It's all fiat currency and none of it matters. Taxes kill money to prevent inflation and deficit spending allows the economy to grow rapidly, for a time. Just do what you want in life and don't worry about being rich. Only rent seeking makes you rich in 2020, not valuable work.

But, for the time being, that fiat money can buy you a taxidermy squirrel riding a rattle snake!

I must have this in my life so I had this shipped overnight. I paid top dollar and is worth every penny. This cures all ailments real and imagined.
Take it to work with you. You can look at it always. Your days will be perfect.

I'm astounded that everyone here wants to find some "easy/mindless" way out of this massive debt (via government/military programs), rather than the entrepreneurial route of practice ownership. What's wrong with working hard and paying your dues that you agreed to when you decided to sign the loan papers? Being a slave for 25 years with some repayment program (+ tax bomb at the end) that might not be there in 25 years seems like a really bad idea. Maybe it's a conspiracy to get everyone sucking on the government's teat, but shoot, people shouldn't give up so easily on their non-dischargable debt load.

To anyone who thinks it’s okay to borrow $650,000 to become a dentist or $900,000 to become a periodontist, or that the US can continue to spend like a drunken sailor I only have one thing to say...

Common sense is not Common.

Mind you, the OP posted this topic 3 years ago. The going rate for that $900k debt is $1M+ today. Dental education has reached Monopoly Game money level.

“Pass Go, Don’t Collect $200, Go Directly to Jail (with a lot Debt).”

Just like our economy, this won’t end well for the schools and future grads.

So true. I think people are very hesitant to be owners today when it is most likely the quickest way to increase your income while being your own boss.

We started a business in dentistry club at my school. Only a handful of people from a school of a few hundred dental students came for our events. The interest is just not there. I think the biggest fear is taking on more debt.

The Aspen dental and corp presentations were well attended though haha.

Cold Front is baaaack. Thank goodness. The dental forums have been a wreck without his contributions. During his brief absence the posts have been all about happiness, positivity, enthusiasm for the dental field. 😉

I am so full of happiness, positivity, and enthusiasm, I just want to go back to 4 yrs of Dental School just for fun! I look forward to waking up everyday so I can wax up crowns and dentures for free!

We had a dental business club in school. Was really pointless since it was headed by an MBA with minimal dental business experience.

Jajaja, yea, something wasn't feeling right in his absence. There was definitely still a lot of negativity about debt, but more balanced.

Haha. It’s a good feeling to be back. Clearly you have missed my stance in these forums.
