I am new to SDN, and observing your GPA's and DAT scores, I'm starting to worry. I thought I was an average student, but now I'm beginning to doubt myself. I am planning to take the DAT in a couple of months.

After much work figuring out my GPA's, here they are:

Non-science: 3.21
Science: 3.22
BCP: 3.28
Overall: 3.21

I am considering to apply next year, so I could hopefully raise my GPA's above the 3.3 level, to be more competitive. What do you guys think? I'm just so nervous, everyone here seems to have excellent GPA and DAT results :scared:

gpa is fine. get 19's or higher on all dat sections and you'll be good to go.

your gpa is definitely lower than average for accepted students. you will probably need to make up for it by doing well on the DAT. Depending on which schools you want to go to, aim for at least 19.

Honestly, though, I think you will probably need a 20; It seems as if 19 is avout average these days for accepted students so you would probably need to outperform the average to make up for that GPA.

but really, the GPA isn't awful... Especially if you can get it to 3.3

you're not badly off, there are many of us sub 3.0'ers who gets in.

Thank you all so much for your input. I guess I'll need to rock the DAT's. I am still nervous about applying for this cycle, but I'll go for it!

Hi! Try this GPA calculator and see what you get. Also, ask your school for your GPA and make sure it's right. My private university messed up big with my GPA and recorded a 3.1 instead of a 3.6! 😱

Hope that helps.

Very handy tool (nice link)

But I beleive AADSAS calculates GPA's a little different. I'm kind of a dork, because I spent half a day figuring everything it out!

A+ is considered 4.333 by AADSAS, and a C- is a 1.666, not 1.7 (which is according to Berkeley). I don't know if your familiar with this scale, but check this link out:

http://home.hiram.edu/students/gpa.asp (although doesn't have A+'s, so if you have these - then this will underestimate you gpa!

AADSAS calculates GPA's exactly like my school does - with one difference A+'s are 4.333 instead of 4.0.

By the way, a 3.1 instead of a 3.6? That's insane 😱

Chill...you're doing fine. You're a lot more competitive than a good number of people on here.

It's about time I see positive comments on here (it gets annoying that people tell other they have no chance) I understand that it may be tougher for people with lower GPA's to get in but it doesn't hurt to encourage someone

what do you guys think about a 3.03 GPA (science gpa slightly lower) and 24 DAT?? Also, it seems as though something that's new for this year is that AADSAS is calculating separate bio, chem, and physics gpa's. My bio and physics gpa's are about 3.1 and 3.5 respectively, but my chem gpa is really low ( low 2. something!). However, the chem sections on the DAT were the highest (gen chem 27 and org chem 25) 😕

Also, does biochemistry fall under bio or chem?

Thanks 👍

Well, to me it is quite obvious that a 27 gen chem score and a 25 org chem score validates you, regardless of how you did in those classes, which is great! Kind of frightening though, that AADSAS is calculating separate GPA's. I spent an entire half-day figuring out the four GPA's that AADSAS calculated for last years cycle. Could you do me a favour? Could you tell me what those GPA's are?

Also, I don't know for sure whether biochemistry falls under chem or bio. But from my experience taking that class, it was more biology oriented than chemistry oriented.

And by the way, EXCELLENT DAT scores! You've probably heard this question tons of times, but I'm going to ask anyway, how did you do it? And how many hours did you put into studying?

Thank You 🙂

Thanks for the reply. As for the DAT, I took a Kaplan course which lasted 7 weeks, and I studied for about an additional 2.5 months after that, but it was off and on because I was also taking a full load of classes. I also used the Topscore CD to do some extra practice tests. I found that the real DAT was a lot easier than the practice tests on kaplan and topscore, *except* for the PAT which was much harder. Good luck!

you wasted half a day. congratulations. work on the parts of the application that will actually make a difference. Don't worry about these classifications, the schools will look at them however they chose to look at them, worrying and trying to figure out how they look at them is a fruitless endeavor.

gpa is lower than the typical student accepted to dental school but this doesn't mean that you can't get into a school. during your next year make 4.0 and do your best on the DAT (very important). with the gpa you will be applying w/ the higher your DAT, the better your chances of getting accepted. work hard and good luck in the future.

Hey, Thanks Bro

This Thread was my first one here on SDN - You actually went back and searched it, and gave me a very nice response, Thanks again!
