Hello....I'm currently a Junior at TCNJ as a psychology major. My GPA is a 2.9....I'm considering PT over PA and was wondering what my chances are right now.....I would need to take Anatomy and Physiology 1&2 and Physics 1&2....My grades so far are Bio-B, Chem 1- B, Chem 2- C. I have a couple questions....I have 3 W's already and considering taking a 4th in Orgo. How do they look at W's that aren't pre-requisites? Also, if i take Physics at a Community College instead of my school will that look bad? Any advice would be great!

Anything is possible, but most schools won't even look at you unless your GPA is above the 3.0 cutoff. So whatever happens AT LEAST make it above a 3.0 for starters..

If possible, could you retake chem 2?

And the majority of schools don't care where you take the classes, community college is fine, but definitely ask the schools you are applying to just be safe!

I can definetly re-take Chem 2, do they average the 2 grades or take the higher of the two? Does a good GRE score make up for other things? Also, above a 3.0 in pre-reqs and cumulative I'm assuming right?

You can find many of the answer to your questions looking through previous posts using the down arrow at upper right of the forum page titled 'Search this Forum'. Each school is different in how they calculate GPAs, minimum requirements of GPA & GRE. IMO if you crush the GRE that can make-up some for a weak GRE but it all depends on the opinions of the admittance committee of whatever program.

Hi imallama,

I'm in the same boat. I've been either rejected by schools or waitlisted for an interview. 🙁 Just curious, when and how did you hear from MSMC? I applied there too but don't know to expect to hear from them via email, their portal, or through snail mail. I also applied to Azusa for 2013. Did you apply for that term too?

I got a letter via snail mail about 2 weeks ago I believe? So if you haven't heard from them, maybe they're still going through the applicants?

Yup, I had to since I graduate from Undergrad in May. I still have to send them my supplemental picture though.

What the heck, I might as well post. This forum has helped me through many months of self-doubt, anxiety and a general sense of "do I even stand a chance?" If my post inspires one mid-level-achiever like myself to pursue their goals, then I'll be happy.

University: University of California, Santa Barbara
Major: Biology, 1999
Undergrad GPA: 2.94
Post-bac GPA: 4.0 (real estate & art classes, and Anatomy)
Overall GPA: 3.16
Pre-req GPA: 2.98

GRE: V160 Q158 AW4.0 (equivalent to ~V605 ~Q740 on old version)

Volunteer/observation: 70 hours inpatient

Applied: Samuel Merritt
Interview: Samuel Merritt
Waitlisted: Samuel Merritt
Finally accepted: Samuel Merritt
:-D

Yep, I only applied to one school. My app/stats weren't "ready" for the other schools I liked this cycle. If I had not been accepted at SMU, I would have applied to probably about 5 schools next cycle. Anyway, good luck everyone!

Oh wow, Congrats, Kepania, on SMU! How awesome to have your one-school "gamble" pay off.

Like you, my overall GPA was boosted by non-prerequisite post-bacc classes -- in my case it was film and photography. I took these classes for fun while I was working full-time, and this was before it even occurred to me to check out PT. The A's in these classes helped raise my GPA from a 3.1 to a 3.5.

Thank you! It was definitely a gamble. I wish my post-bacc classes has boosted my GPA more... I think I just have so many credits overall it just didn't help that much. Thats why I had to do well on the GRE! And it paid off! ;-)

congrats on Samuel Merritt, that is awesome! I am hoping to get in there this next cycle!

I was totally in the same boat -- had to rock the GRE and maintain a 4.0 in post-bacc classes to feel like I even had a chance at all.

I'm happy it paid off for you too -- well done!

Thank you! Yeah I figured I had to kill it on the GRE to even get an interview! I'm pretty sure that was the only reason that I did!

FINAL UPDATE

I hope to serve as inspiration to all those with really low stats. I graduated from college in 2010 and I had waaaaayyy too much fun. My attitude back then was to just get by and pass all my classes with C's so I can graduate and go to grad school. I ended up taking 2 years off to gain experience and continue taking classes to raise my GPA. Since I started retaking pre-reqs and finishing up other courses I never got anything below a B (would've been a B+ plus the community colleges don't give out +/- grades lol). My advice to all those in a situation like mine is to keep taking classes and gain as many observation hours in as many different settings. You need to show the schools that you are actively working to become a better student than you were. Also, if waitlisted for an interview, update the admissions director of your progress frequently. Keep faith in yourself and don't give up! You can achieve anything as long as you are driven and keep a positive attitude. 🙂
