Couldn't get a date change for one of them?
Yeah I'm thinking bout doing that, but these schools aren't really on my "top schools" list so I don't really feel compelled to visit them both. And since Western is already located in the Los Angeles area, I think I would prefer to visit Fresno over West Coast. But we'll see, I might try and visit both...I have lots of free time until PT school starts lol.

Ok, well good luck at the interviews!

oh really? interesting, I didn't know that. I thought it was accredited already.

Nope they are in "Candidacy for Accredidation". However, that doesn't worry me one bit. The campus and equipment is new. They have a fall back plan for their students, if in any likelihood they fail candidacy, AND being that they need to get accredited... I feel that gives them more incentive to make certain that their students do well and pass the NPTE. The only thing that bugs me is that they don't have an anatomy dissection lab. 🙁 It is all electronic...

Oh and WestCoast is in LA, 10 min away from me so that wouldn't be too bad of a commute. 😛

What do you guys think of my stats? Some people posting on here have crazy stats! I was an undergrad who graduated, worked for five years, then went back to school for the prerequisites and am currently taking those, finishing them up. Has anyone heard about Upstate's interview process, are they a selective school when it comes to interviews?

Thanks 🙂

You're stats are average. The fact that you have an interview already is a good sign. Hopefully you have some strong LORs, a strong essay and nail the interview. You've got a good chance if you do, but it does kind of depend on how the process works at that school and what they place the most weight on.

Major: Psychology
Cumulative GPA: 3.65
Pre-Req GPA: 4.00
Math & Science GPA: 3.88
GRE: Haven't taken yet

Extra-Curric: I'm a non-traditional student, so I don't know how much this matters, but during my first time through undergrad, I had a number of mental health-related volunteer opportunities, including prison inmate advocacy through American Friends Service Committee and at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Milan, MI. Since graduating, I've mostly stayed busy through work, splitting time between a couple of jobs in music retail and freelancing guitar lessons. Physical fitness is very important to me, and I spend a significant amount of time running and lifting weights.

Observation: Just started a part-time job, 30 hours a week at an outpatient clinic about 40 minutes from my house. I'm hoping to pick up a few other observation opportunities here and there on other open days during the week.

Applied: Haven't applied yet, looking to apply for the 2016 cycle.

I realize I'm still a bit early on here, but I'm just curious as to what the opinions of some other pre-PT/PT students might be as to where I'm at. I'm a non-traditional student, having graduated from University of Michigan back in 2007; I'd originally planned on going to law school, but after taking a couple of undergraduate law classes near the end of my undergraduate tenure, I decided that wasn't right for me. I didn't want to just head back into graduate school without a clear idea of what I wanted to do. Seven years later, it became obvious that PT was the right route for me, and I headed back to school in 2013. While I've thought of potentially going to med school and ending up in PM&R, I really feel like PT is the right place for me due to the amount of hands-on experience spent with patients.

I guess my questions are as follows:

I realize that my original undergraduate GPA of 3.65, while not bad, is unimpressive by PT admissions standards. Given that my pre-PT prerequisites are all done, should I expect admissions committees to bolster the possibility that I might be invited for an interview based on the fact that I have a 4.00 in all of my pre-PT classes that I've finished over the past year, or is it more likely that my adjusted overall GPA (which will end up at around a 3.75 after calculating in PT prerequisites) will have a larger impact. I'd like to believe that the PT prereqs are more important, but I really don't know for a fact.

My goal is to cast my net locally and stay local if possible -- Wayne State University, Oakland University, University of Toledo, University of Michigan-Flint, and Central Michigan University are my primary schools of interest, with Oakland University and Wayne State being my biggest targets (I even took most of my PT prerequisites at Wayne State hoping to get in there). Staying local is important to me if possible, as I am in my thirties and my parents are approaching their seventies (not to mention that my girlfriend is planning on moving back from Boston to be with me soon) and I would like to be near home if possible to take care of them. I realize that I may be making a big error by letting this dictate where I end up in school, but I'm hoping that my 4.00 GPA in my prerequisites will help me out.

I have not yet taken the GRE, and am planning on prepping for it over the next few months. I've generally performed well on standardized tests in the past.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

I was nervous about not hearing back from other school and paid the $500 deposit for Radford and got my acceptance for Shenandoah a week later -_- I was pretty much set on SU-Leesburg campus as it is 10 minutes from my house but then I got the interview from UNC and was stunned. I still can't believe I got an interview based on my stats and being out of state.
UNC offers scholarships for most students from what I understand... does anyone know how significant these scholarships can be/a tuition for out of state students? (everything I found is out of date)

You guys are awesome. The camaraderie on this forum is incredible.

I don't know how much this matters, but during my first time through undergrad, I had a number of mental health-related volunteer opportunities, including prison inmate advocacy through American Friends Service Committee and at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Milan, MI.

It does matter, but not greatly. But it's a good thing to be able to include on the volunteer activities section of the application, and to be able to talk about in an interview if the moment/question happened to be right.

Just started a part-time job, 30 hours a week at an outpatient clinic about 40 minutes from my house. I'm hoping to pick up a few other observation opportunities here and there on other open days during the week.

Try to focus on getting inpatient observation hours (rehab, acute, SNF, etc) since you will have plenty of outpatient hours. It wouldn't hurt to also spend a couple of day with a different PT at a different flavor of outpatient (eg peds, hand therapy if it is a PT not an OT, etc).

I realize that my original undergraduate GPA of 3.65, while not bad, is unimpressive by PT admissions standards.

Your original undergrad GPA is totally irrelevant (although a 3.65 is above average for PT applicants overall). Your cumulative GPA is what matters, which appears to be a 3.75 at this point. That is above average for accepted applicants at almost all PT schools.

With a pre-req GPA of 4.0 on top of that, you literally have nothing to worry about as far as grades go.

Both are very important. If you perform decently on the GRE I 100% guarantee you will get multiple interview invites.

My goal is to cast my net locally and stay local if possible -- Wayne State University, Oakland University, University of Toledo, University of Michigan-Flint, and Central Michigan University are my primary schools of interest

If you add an above average GRE score, some strong LORs, diverse observation hours and a good essay to the GPAs you already have, and then apply to 5 schools and don't totally bomb the interviews, I am totally confident you will get into at least one school. You'll probably get into 2 or 3.

Use the experiences you have had as a non-traditional student to your advantage in your essay(s) and in your interviews. There have been lots of non-trad related threads on the PT forums over the years, you will find lots of good info if you search for them and study it out.

Good luck and welcome to the forum! Don't be a stranger! The PTCAS instructions and the SDN search feature will also provide you with a wealth of good information. As will the admissions counselors at the schools you want to apply to. I wouldn't hesitate to call them and ask them what you can do to have the strongest application possibly at their school specifically.

If you go to five interview and don't get accepted somewhere I would be completely and totally shocked...at this point all you need to do is not act like a total weirdo at your interviews and I'm sure you are going to get in somewhere. 👍

4 interviews in 11 days though...are you going to be able to make it to all of them?
yyyyyyep. flights are all booked, preparation is beginning.

thanks!

Thanks a lot!

👍 You'll have to let all of us scheduled for the 30th know how it goes.
Will do! Do you know much about the program? Looks legit from a graduation/NPTE passing standpoint.

I know as much as you can learn from their website pretty much. Guess I'll find out more on the 30th.

ACCEPTANCE UPDATE!!!

I have been accepted to Washington University!!! But I interview at UTHSC on 02/13 and unless I fall in love with the program I will be in Saint Louis this fall! Beyond excited, this was one of my top picks. DON'T freak out guys if you have been wait-listed or have a weaker application area, you CAN make up for it in other areas.

Took my GRE three years ago when I had planned to go to grad school.... then I took the MCAT because I thought I wanted to be a doctor, until I worked at Benchmark Physical Therapy and the hospital... I realized the doctor-patient relationship is completely different than the PT-patient relationship. Anyways.... I plan on retaking the GRE this month. I've spoken with Wash U, Duke and Belmont and they don't think a Sept test is "too late" for the 2015 class. Here's to hoping I get in!

Good luck everyone!
