This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So glad to find this website filled with useful information.🙂
I'm an international student who owns BS of physical therapy degree.
I would like to apply transitional physical therapy program in the US,
but I haven't found lots of information here.

I would like to apply T-DPT program in NYU.
Is there any one can give me some advices??

Major: physical therapy
Overall GPA: 3.53
GRE: 148V, 160Q, 3.0W

Extra-Curric: clinical practice for 48 weeks
working experience: orthopedic clinic for 1 year

Feel happy to communicate with all of u who aim to be DPT.

you cant apply for a transitional program unless you hold a masters in pt and are a current practicing pt. if you have a bachelors from an undergrad institution then you apply for entry level

Actually, the transitional program at NYU does specifically admit students who are practicing PTs in other countries, even those who hold a bachelors (which in many countries is the requirement for becoming a practicing PT). Beyond that, I don't know anything about the program. hubertku, you might want to start a new thread with your question, as it might get more views and responses, instead of posting in this GPA thread. Good luck!

Core GPA: 3.1

So excited abut NYU!! just waiting to hear back from Mercy!

Congrats!!! I'm guessing you are deciding b/w NYU & Mercy?

My GPA is a bit lower than yours. 😳 I applied to LIU, NYMC, and Dominican also.
Did you decline on your interview to NYMC?

..and what was your undergrad major/college?

I was distracted my Junior year and withdrew from university to come back 3 years later and finish my degree (20k+ in tuition went into collections account):

Applications
NYMC, LIU-Brooklyn, NYIT, Stony Brook, Touro-Manhattan, Dominican-Blauvelt, & SDSU

Considering sending in to: Franklin Pierce, St. Augustine-San Marcos (Jan '14 admit)

Ugh, my GPA...Biggest thing hurting me is how many courses I repeated over the years. Hopefully they will see the consistency in my last 60 credits.

It's been a battle for me to finish my undergrad, just excited to give it my best shot and let my recommendations speak for me. (Four LOR's from: 1 dPT, 1 phD in physiology, 1 phD in genomics, 1 Masters in Public Health, all people who stand by me!)

My essays have to do with personal hardship & triumph, in 2012, 3 members of my family (aunt, father, grandmother) were seriously affected by cardiovascular disease and attended rehab (strokes and bypasses).

Just looking for support, or feedback from anyone applying to the same schools, in similar boat, etc.

Thanks!

Congrats on your acceptance to UCF and Pitt! You have some excellent statistics. How were your interviews? I am preparing for my interviews this Spring.

Hi! Just got an interview with NYU! How was it? Should there be anything I should look out for? Should I be concerned because my interview is so late?

You applied to some pretty competitive schools, with the low overall GPA it might be an uphill battle, but you never know. Good luck.

Yeah, I feel the same as well. Not sure what other not so competitive programs I should submit applications. I had a bad run in college and unfortunately nothing I do not will improve the gpa high enough to make a difference at this point. Just praying someone sees my letters of recommendation, work experiences and grades for the last couple semesters in a positive light.

Are you set in staying in the east coast or midwest? If not, Touro nevada has a lower gpa requirement you could look in to.

I totally understand and know exactly how you feel because i am in the same situation. i screwed around in undergrad and nothing i will do will boost the gpa high enough to be competitive. i'm retaking most of my pre-reqs to get A's hopefully that will increase something. i've come to realize, and i hate to say it, that most programs nowadays due to the increase number of applicants pretty much have a check list when reviewing apps. they first check off whether you meet all requirements, and then from there go on to read letter of recs and essays/resume. so with that being said if one doesn't meet one checklist requirement your app is automatically rejected. (sucks i know, but thats how they weed out applicants). i might be wrong but that seems to be what i've noticed. hey then again you never know right, so best wishes and i'm crossing my fingers!

I'm not entirely sure how the new GRE scoring works, but from my experience schools don't weight your GRE scores too heavily. I think many schools would rather see good coursework, observation/work experience, etc. The GRE is just a standardized way to compare people, so as long as you score above their minimum I think you should be fine. It never hurts to call the school and ask to speak to someone in admissions though.

That may be true, I'm just speaking from my own experience. I didn't score that well on my GRE (I've never been a great standardized test taker) and after getting wait-listed everywhere last year I asked many admissions people if I should retake it... they all were pretty indifferent as I had scored above their cut-off.

Yes its a laundrylist of schools- I make enough money to pay for the applications so I figured with my less than optimal GPA I should increase my chances by means possible.

I screwed around my freshmen year at UNCW a decade ago and have 2 semesters of F's that PTCAS insists on factoring into my GPA. Unfortunately a lot of these schools fail to look at grade trends and other aspects of the applicant- rather they use GPA and other numbers to make their decisions on who gets a seat in the program (in many cases without even seeing or speaking to the person).

My PTCAS gpa is not entirely correct, they didn't include my first two years of college in the calculations because I went to a Canadian university. This lowered my cumulative GPA slightly but raised my pre-req GPA, since it cancelled out my B- in psych 😎

My situation might be slightly unique because I was a transfer student from a community college in my undergrad years so i'll try to clarify. Hopefully this helps some of you undergrad transfer students though!

I know HERL is a funny acronym...but in all seriousness, for those of you struggling a bit with the gpa side of things, VOLUNTEER FOR RESEARCH at your university! Doing something as simple as collecting data will go a LOOONG way. During my interview at AU, he noticed that I was involved in research and praised me A LOT for it. Plus, you can get a great LoR from a professor from this too! So again, I can't stress to you all enough to get involved with research!

did you get accepted to the FP in NH or AZ? Congrats!!!

Hope this helps those with lower undergrad GPAs! Also, for those contemplating going back to school with non-traditional backgrounds: with an anthro major I took ZERO math and science classes in my undergrad and went back to school starting with intermediate algebra and intro to beginning chemistry and took 13 classes during the past few years while working appox. 30 hours a week...it's a lot of work but it's possible!
Also, these stats include my updated grades from last semester, but the stats I sent out to all the schools were before the updates were calculated in and were all about .3-.4 points lower depending on the section...except for undergrad GPA, obviously

University:University of Oregon, class of 2008
Major: Anthropology
Minors: Business, Political Science
Undergrad GPA: 3.0

Yeah as far as I know my LORs were great and I thought my essay was solid (an english professor helped me write everything). It was so strange though, Touro sent me an email to do a supplemental application (Their supplemental app is by invitation). So I did my supplemental app, I did not get any word that they had received it so I contacted them. They were not sure what was going on with my app. Later that day I got an email saying you do not qualify to fill out a supplemental app (contradictory to the first email). So I called and the admissions guy I talked to was very rude and just kept telling me "you are rejected, and I cant tell you why". Overall it just did not seem like they were on top of things.

Sounds like my experience with ECU. Of course they aren't using PTCAS which, in my opinion, makes the process more difficult sometimes.

ECU's grad school lost two of my LOR's which I am positive were mailed in- 1 by my boss and another by a professor IN THE GRAD SCHOOL. They have horrible turn around time on emails and the staff are inconsiderate and unorganized. The PT department never even saw my name on a piece of paper because the grad school was incompetent. They told me my "fee" was waived which I assumed was the application fee but turned out to just be the transcript fee. The PT department urged me via email to pay it immediately ($70) which I did, only to have some woman from the grad school with terrible grammar tell me that I missed the deadline and that the fee is nonrefundable.

I highly recommend not wasting your time applying to ECU, at least until they switch to PTCAS.

Congratulations Welsh Wizard. EWU is said to be a good program and low in state tuition. Are you a Washington resident ?
