GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats on your Simmons acceptance! How did they contact you?

Thank you so much! I received a letter in the mail last week dated for Dec. 30th, but I thought that Simmons conducted interviews though so I was a little confused. I'm going to call later this week to set up a time to visit so I'll ask about the rest of their admissions process

As you may have figured out from your acceptance Simmons does not do interviews. They suggest in their acceptance letter you visit the school though.

UNC offers scholarships for most students from what I understand... does anyone know how significant these scholarships can be/a tuition for out of state students? (everything I found is out of date)

I'm an out-of-state UNC undergrad, and I basically have a full ride. PT school will be a little different but they give great aid to many people.

Yes!! I was resigned to not hearing anything for quite a bit longer. Although, I'm sure they are moving through the waitlist pretty fast since it's such an expensive school.

Just got a call from Wingate about my acceptance!!

Congrats! I just recently got an email stating that my application is still under review. You have better stats than me so we'll see what happens. Not losing hope yet though! You think you'll attend or still waiting on others?

I got a good 4-5 of those emails since I applied in September so hopefully you'll hear something good soon! I'm waiting to hear back from a few more before I make my final decision, but I'm definitly considering it.

I'm guessing you've probably gotten a C or two in your pre-reqs? Or was it pretty much straight B's to get the 3.0? What were your pre-req grades?

Also, a significantly improved GRE verbal score (like 160+) would help make up for your bad grades at some schools (some put significantly more weight on it than others). And you would want to target schools that do grade replacement for retakes, not average of the two grades.

See this thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/my-experience-in-applying-to-dpt-programs.1115591/

Not sure how to repost the update. Looks as if I applied to way more schools than I needed to. Casting a wide net is a waste of money. Better to pick your top five based on solid research and roll with that strategy, unless you have money to burn🙂

Update! Another rejection! Oh well, at least there's no more indecision for UNE.

First time post! In this thread and period! Been lurking for a while, and wanted to show another non-trad plus low GPA applicant.

Undergrad Cum: 2.88
Current Cum: 2.94 (will be higher with academic update, also roughly a 3.1-3.2 depending on how a school grades retakes)
Post-Bac: 4.00
Pre-req GPA: 3.34 (according to PTCAS, B+ at my school were 3.5 instead of 3.3, so my calculations have it a bit higher. Plus retaking A&P 1&2, and Physics 2 probably has it at a 3.7ish.)
GRE: 162V, 156Q, 4.5 AW

Observation: 5000+ in outpatient with all different populations, 12 in-patient

Don't lose hope. If you don't get in anywhere this cycle and you really are passionate about PT. Then try again next cycle... the same thing happened to me. I'm a 2nd year cycle applicant and didn't get anywhere the 1st cycle, only waitlisted at one school. So I retook a few classes to bump up my GPA, and I applied EARLY. I cannot stress this enough, apply early and bump up that GPA as well as your GRE.

This cycle, I have gotten 2 interviews so far and I am really EXCITED about it. Don't lose hope... pick yourself back up and try again. It's not over... Good Luck!

Interview offers: NAU, Midwestern, Belmont, AASU, Elon
Actual interviews: Midwestern, AASU

I would like to have had WAY more observation hours and a few more settings (skilled nursing and in-home primarily). It was a trade-off between supporting my wife and I and observing for free and I chose to put more effort into work to get through undergrad and keep a roof over our heads / food in our mouths. 200 is cutting it WAY too close though, go for 1000+ if you can!

As the poster above me said, 200 is fine and variety is what counts. I have just about 100 total in 4 different settings and have a number of interviews and a couple of acceptances. 100 is on the low side for some schools though, so I will say that my stats may have balanced it out. I think 100-200 across a number of settings is a good bet for most people

With the variety of settings you have and the GPA you have I seriously doubt doing more observation hours would have increased your chances of acceptance at all. If you have a >3.9 GPA your observation hours are not going to keep you out of any schools as long as you meet their minimum requirements. You are being kind of neurotic saying you need 1000+ hours. 200 is more than most people who haven't worked as a tech have, and above that number you will see diminishing returns at most schools (lots of applicants have worked as a tech for years and have thousands of hours, and from what I've seen this does not tend to make up for poor grades nor does it really make applicants stand out that much). Re-taking the GRE to get a 4 or greater on the writing would have been way more worth your time than doing more hours, but you are going to be fine anyway.

How do you have an interview offer from NAU already?
