GPA's, GRE's, XTRA's, ACCEPTANCES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@tonyt91!!!!! Fellow future UNLV student! There is a thread called "UNLV interviews" in the pre-PT forum you could say hi in, and there should be a Facebook group called "UNLV DPT Class of 2018" going now too. Congrats! See you in June. 🙂

Final update from me on this thread as I heard from all schools as of this morning!

UPDATE: I officially accepted my offer from Neumann and will start there in May. Congrats to all my fellow Class of 2018 DPT students!

University: University of Oklahoma for my bachelor's, pre-reqs at local CC
Major: Music Performance

Overall GPA: 3.99
Pre-Req GPA: 4.0
GRE: 159V, 151Q, 4.0 AW

Volunteer: I sit on the board of a local music club and I belong to another community music organization. I have about 100 hours of PT observation, still need to get 100 more to fulfill Neumann's requirement of 200.

Applied to: Drexel, Widener, Lebanon Valley College, Neumann
Acceptances: Neumann (ACCEPTED OFFER ON 2/13), Widener with $2500/year scholarship
Waitlist: LVC (removed myself from waitlist)
Rejections: Drexel
Interviews: Neumann (1/6)

Final update from me on this thread as I heard from all schools as of this morning!

Congrats on your acceptance! If you don't mind telling me, when did you hear back from Widener? (and I assume you will be declining their offer?) I have not heard much of anything with them which surprises me. Last year they had decisions made much earlier than most schools.

I heard via email this morning. I got an email after the PTCAS academic update that they were reviewing my application, and today's email was the first time I'd heard from them since then. And yes, I'll be declining.

Guys, I know the application process so far is extremely anxious and the "waiting game" is probably haunting to everyone. So if any of you was accepted, I hope you are pleased with your choices and appreciate that at least you get in somewhere; otherwise, if you have not heard any acceptance, don't lose hope!
I can tell briefly my process:
August 2014: 8/1 : completed PTCAS application
September: 9/23: University of Delaware (early admission) rejected
October: 10/29: Touro College Manhattan rejected
December: 12/8: University of Maryland Baltimore rejected
12/18: Marymount University rejected
January 2015: 1/6: Temple University rejected
1/14: Shenandoah University rejected
February 2015: 2/5 Rutgers University Stratford rejected
2/9 Lynchburg College Waitlist (a little hope)
2/15 University of Scranton rejected
March 2015: 3/9 Lynchburg College Waitlist -> Accepted
So I got only one acceptance in 9 schools I applied to but I was so so happy about that.
Sometimes success only comes at the final minutes so again, don't lose hope my friends. I think my list above can give beliefs to those who are still waiting to hear. Good luck to you all!!

Congratulations on your acceptance! There's a lot of movement going on with waitlists right now so there will be a lot of people getting acceptances in the next few weeks. I sincerely hope everyone on SDN gets accepted somewhere and I'm looking forward to seeing posts about acceptances soon!

Has anyone heard anything from NYU recently?

Still haven't heard back from them after I interviewed with them.

DAMNIT! What do I have to do to get into a program already!?!?!
I just saw that four people suddenly went missing from our Facebook page so I would be guessing that four people will be coming off the wait list! I'm pulling for you! This is the most movement I've seen on our page so it would seem that people are shuffling schools a lot right now. Anyway, just thought you might want to know that. If I were you I would probably at least call. That could make a difference.

Waitlist: University of New England, Wheeling Jesuit University, Lynchburg College, West Coast University

Acceptances: DeSales University! University of St. Augustine San Marcos

Rejections: Basically all the ones I didn't get interview invitations to

This is my second year applying and I was nervous I might have needed to apply a third year. Definitely used the spray and pray method which I ended up regretting. Precision applying would have been much more valuable, learned that the hard way. Luckily, I got an acceptance from DeSales. I am truly an example of hard work and dedication that someone with lesser stats can get accepted with a little bit of luck. Please don't give up. I want to commend all of the outstanding applicants that have posted on SDN previously, truly blessed to be joining the likes of such exemplary students.

I'm not sure what to do. USA is a great program, however, I really did like DeSales... Would it be crazy to pick a candidate of accreditation school over a fully accredited school?

I'd pick the school I felt was the best fit for me. I would look at Desales stats also. If their stats are good they probably won't have any issue with accreditation. I haven't seen a school that was a candidate for accreditation not become accredited. Also they probably have some agreement with another program to let their students sit for the NPTE in the unlikely event they do not become accredited. I'd call them and ask.

Would it be crazy to pick a candidate of accreditation school over a fully accredited school?

Not really. There has never been a candidate school fail to become accredited. Go with the cheaper one if there is a notable cost difference once you've factored in everything (cost of living, distance from home, potential spousal job prospects if applicable, length of program, etc, etc). If not, then start going down your list of pros and cons for each school.

Also take note that St. Augustine has a big emphasis on manual therapy...so if inpatient settings if your thing, maybe consider DeSales

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and just wondering if anyone is having success with a lower GPA to any smaller schools around the country?

A little about me:

Undergraduate Major: Exercise Science
Undergrad GPA: 3.0
Pre-Req GPA: 2.75-2.85 depending
GRE: Taking in 2 months

Experience:

400hrs in patient facility
40hrs outpatient vestibular center
Special needs activity program instructor.
Personal training

I plan to do more outpatient hours as well as SNF. I haven't applied to schools for the fall, the plan is to apply to schools for spring/summer sessions depending. Just looking for some other opinions or schools you know people have had success with?

I am a people person, I just had some personal issues and other situations in my early undergrad years. My GPA has increased significantly over the past 4 years. I know if I got an interview I would be a lot better off in the schools decision making process.

@Lots of Praying Thanks for your input! It's appreciated. DeSales does have affiliation agreements with accredited schools in the area in the unlikely event they do fail to gain accreditation, which is good!

@DesertPT Yes I think a pro/con list is my best bet at this point. It's always been my dream to live in California as I'm from Pennsylvania, but I want to choose the best program for me rather than a desirable destination to live. I think DeSales may be the better program fit for me, but USA is the more reputable program overall. Lots to think about.

@ktachiba Yes USA does have a phenomenal manual therapy reputation. When at the interview, they did mention that students wouldn't be able to truly get involved with the manual therapy aspect of the program until the final trimester. So I think attending a school like DeSales would present more of a 'generalist' degree, if you will, and then potentially later on through continuing education requirements, I could venture into the manual therapy realm at USA, as it doesn't seem like a large emphasis on the DPT program as a whole. But manual therapy is a very tempting and renowned specialty they do offer at the school, which is difficult to pass up...

I would retake some prerequisite classes to get that pGPA up over a 3.0 and preferably around a 3.5. Apply to schools that take grade replacement. Also you need to crush the GRE and I would definitely get observation hours in at least five settings. You need to strengthen your application to overcome your low overall GPA. I had a 3.15 overall GPA due to grades from 15-20 years ago, but my prerequisite GPA was a 3.8 and I got into NSU.

@Mr. Dunkle while you don't take classes toward your manual certification until the final trimester at USA the curriculum itself has a strong Paris influence throughout the program.

@b_campbell04 Yeahh it most certainly does have a strong Paris influence which is very alluring. And I'm sure manual therapy wouldn't be lost throughout the entirety of the program, it'd be naive to think they only cover those aspects exclusively in the final trimester. But even just their large class sizes and the lack of timeliness they've given to me and others regarding interview notifications, I just don't know if I'd be a number in that program rather than a valued student. The opportunity to help build a program at DeSales with smaller class sizes may be more valuable to my education as the professors will truly value students and their opinion on the program's direction. And then I could go to Cali for clinicals haha

I have already planned on that if I don't get in the first round. I'm still hopeful that I can get into a school with lower req like pre req of 2.75 which there are some schools like that. My only concern is that retaking some prerequisites at a community college at home won't be accepted or looked at as highly. I graduate in a month so staying at my university isn't really an option.

It sounds to me like you are leaning more towards DeSales. It's all in what your vision is post graduation honestly. Perhaps USA doesn't suit you as well as DeSales and that's entirely ok! Remember though, admissions doesn't represent the entire staff and they do have a large enrollment class three times a year opposed to most school's one. I think you'll get a great education regardless of which program you choose! Good luck weighing your options and let us know what you decide!!

It doesn't matter if you took prerequisites at a community college or university. Look at schools that allow for grade replacement and retake some of your prerequisite courses. I'm not trying to be harsh, but most programs will throw your application in the trash as soon as they see your prerequisite GPA being anything below a 3.0. It's very competitive to get into a PT school so you have to get the pGPA up to around a 3.5 just to have a shot. FYI most of us on here try to be brutally honest with each other purely as a means of helping each other. I truly want to see everyone on SDN get in somewhere.

Not true. And even if it were, if would be looked upon a lot more highly than having a 2.8 will!
Partially true. You have to look at each school individually. There are definitely schools that do not like credits coming from a CC especially if they are repeated courses. I have spoken to some enrollment advisors who preach that. But typically schools that look at applicants holistically rather than hard lining numbers 1. Replace with the highest grade and 2. Do not care where the credits were taken.

There are definitely schools that do not like credits coming from a CC especially if they are repeated courses.

Perhaps. But based on the situation the poster of this question is in, I can definitely say that there are no schools that like to see a 2.8 pre-req GPA over repeated classes from a CC. Since this poster may need to retake quite a few classes it may not be financially feasible to stay at the university.

You are definitely right about searching for the schools that will be most willing to look at your app.

FYI most of us on here try to be brutally honest with

I respect the honest answers and I'm no way offended. I've heard a lot of mixed things from schools and friends who have already been admitted. Some schools like Duquesne have a pre-req of 2.75. How many people get in with that, highly doubt that many. I've also heard that schools do not like repeat courses and some don't like courses coming from a CC. You are correct that me staying at my university will empty my wallet haha, because of the classes being continuing Ed.

My real question is, would it be worth it to apply for spring/summer semesters and get rejected, then reapply? Or just hold out and retake a few pre-reqs?

I've also heard and have seen students get into PT school because they have recommendation letters from DPT graduates from that school. Those students also had a lower GPA like myself.

A low enough number that you can safely assume it won't happen for you.

If you really do think you will be rejected, don't waste your money. I would seriously consider sitting a year out and dedicating yourself to improving your app in as many ways as possible over that time, then apply whey you have a quality application put together. A big part of this is going to be very extensive research to determine the schools at which your application will be most competitive. With a year to work on this, you could retake a bunch of pre-reqs (I'm assuming there are probably a good 5 or 6 you didn't get at least a B in), you could study hard for and do well on the GRE, you could diversify your observation hours, practice up on interview skills and dedicate time to getting high quality LORs and writing a high quality essay.

Like I've said before, there is tons of advice posted in many threads on this forum about how to become a competitive candidate for PT school when starting with a bad GPA. So search up, SDN has a good advanced search feature. I know that myself, @starrsgirl and @dalingil have contributed to several threads on this subject with some substantial posts as well as links to blogs. Many others have offered great advice as well. Best of luck to you, don't hesitate if you have any other questions. 🙂

PM'd you. I went through the same decision making process.

Has anyone on here applied to/heard from Husson?

🙁 Then i'm definitely no where near that because I haven't gotten any e-mails at all but the information does help!

@dptforyou I wouldn't use my real picture on this forum if I was you (if that is your real picture). PT is a small world and it's already hard to stay anonymous as it is.

Yeah I got the email about the formal review on January 12th.

Great to hear so many people getting into PT school!

I will not be applying this cycle but thought I would share anyways for this fall. I went through the process a couple years ago and was stuck on 4 waiting lists. Decided to enroll in a Masters in Sports Medicine program and love it. Have a lot of control over the courses I am taking that will help with PT school. Also, plan on getting my CSCS and starting my thesis work soon. I realize I don't have the strongest cGPA or GRE score but going to research 7-10 schools who look betyond that. Hope it all works out!

UPDATE-Acceptance: Indiana State University
This was my original post from a month or so ago. I decided to apply to Indiana State University and Mary Hardin Baylor. These are two non-accredited first year programs. I have not heard back from MHB but just got my acceptance letter from ISU. I would highly recommend ISU to those students who have not been accepted and have similar stats. I was very impressed with the facilities and the faculty. I have no doubt they will receive accreditation with I graduate. They are on a rolling admissions and still accepting applications. Good luck to all.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions!
