Hello all,

I completed my third year of dental school and will be starting the fourth year this fall (2010). Due to certain circumstances, I will be taking NB in late january 2011 and will not be taking my regional licencing exam until August 2011 (after I graduate). I am leaning towards GPR but I don't know which ones or in which state I want to do it in and want to decide after I get my NBII scores. Should I still fill out the PASS application now and go through the process, or just wait until after match to see whcih positions are unfilled and apply then? Will I be able to start a GPR in july 2011 without having a state licence? Is it just better for me to look for a job as an associate or do will I still have a shot at GPR? sorry for so many questions but I am very confused and would appreciate any advise. Thank you in advance..

It depends on how you feel when you are finished with D school. I know that your main concern right now is the logistics of time of taking your licensure exam in august and not being able to do anything. There are two ways you can look at it.

Gpr/AEGD you can go straight from D school. If you go through match it is legally binding, meaning that you must commit to the program. you can also do post match. usually post match spots will be in the NY area since there are more programs/positions. However, you risk the chance of being in a program which you are not happy with.

You can wait and go on a long long vacation until you pass your licensure exam. if you pass on it the first try. I don't know which one you are taking, but you have to consider the possibility of retaking. I don't intend to bash on your skills at all, but i just want you to think about it. Also, the licensure retakes are offered at certain times/locations.

Overall, it depends on your comfort with your D skills and how long you are willing to wait. No one can make the decision but you. whatever you end up with i hope it works out for you.

Thank you so much for the great insight. Basically, what I am worried about is will GPRs/AEGD accept me (or even offer me an interview) if I have not taken NBII by the application deadline date and will not have a state licence by the enrollment date? (mostly focusing on NJ, NY, delaware, PA area). Hope that makes sense..if anyone has been in similar situation or know the answer, i would appreciate the help!

Most programs in the NY metro area interview around Thnanksgiving, and many applicants do not have their part 2 scores yet. You do not need a license in NY to do a GPR, you will have a registration number with the state board as participating in an accredited program. Your only risk applying in the match i that you do not pass part 2 and do not graduate. You will not have time for a second chance prior to the 7/1 start date. That will seem to apply to you or post math as well, as the open positions get filled up around late Jan and early Feb. The remaining open spots are usually from people who drop out or dont graduate.

i took part 2 in feb, a month after i had matched. no one cares that you haven't taken it; it's part one they're looking at. like setdoc said you dont actually need a license to practice in the state youre doing the residency in...you don't need a license at all. you're still a student. i know a lot of people who do a residency in some other state b/c they want to move to that state and take the licensing test during their residency.

Thanks everyone for great feedbacks! its definately helping me in making the right decision! keep sharing...👍
