Hello all!

I have been reading and researching on which veterinary schools take the highest grade for repeated courses into consideration. However, I have been finding contradicting info! I have read that Kansas and Ohio are two colleges that do this. Is this true? Anyone know of any more? The last thread I found info on this topic was from 2012. Not sure if policy has changed since. Any info will be helpful! Thanks!! ☺️

So this is the information I have found from reading a few of these 'grade replacement' threads:

Schools that averages both grades:
Tufts
Purdue


Extra:
-Kansas looks at last 45 lot
-UMN looks at prereq GPA and last 45 only
-Iowa uses last 45 and science only
-Michigan cares a lot about last 45, doesn't look at cGPA at all
-Mississippi looks at last 45


If anyone can please add to these lists, that would be great! I would love to know which schools take the NEW replacement grade, and which ones look mainly at cumulative GPA. Thanks!

I would actually double check this list....there's some corrections to be made
*Ohio - AVERAGES their grades according to their Admissions office
*LSU for example is tricky - they only replace the grade IF there's been more than 6 years that has elapsed since the original course was taken:
  • "Applicants may choose to re-take a course to better master the subject at any point. If a course that is more than six years old is retaken, the most recent grade will be used otherwise all of the grades/credits for that specific course will be used when computing grade point averages. (I.E. - If a "D" is earned in a BIOL 1202 course taken in 2013 and a "B" is earned in a subsequent BIOL 1202 course taken in 2014, a total of six credit hours and 12 quality points are calculated into the Required Course GPA.)"

TAMU - AVERAGES
Univ. of Florida - AVERAGES
Univ. of TN - AVERAGES

Oh how weird about Ohio, I thought they took the new grade from what I was told. Guess not! Too bad they don't take the new grade.

Thank you all for your replies! Very helpful information! As a student that graduated with a B.S. in Biology with a very low GPA (3.06), I am trying to figure out the schools that I may actually have a decent chance at acceptance after retaking the prereqs I struggled with.

Also take a good look at the percentage of OOS students each school accepts. Your chances are much higher!

Just heard back from Midwestern's admissions office:
"GPAs are calculated by VMCAS and all attempts at coursework will be averaged together into your GPA".

as well as from Wisconsin's admissions office:
"For the purpose of total cumulative undergraduate GPA calculation, both course grades would be included in the total cumulative undergraduate GPA (provided they were both completed prior to the first B.S. or B.A. degree being posted). Additionally if both courses were completed within the last 30 semester credits, both course grades would be included in the last 30 semester credit GPA calculation. For the purpose of required coursework GPA calculation, the highest grade earned should be the only course grade used in the required coursework GPA calculation".

To refresh old info here, Iowa now grade replaces. Illinois averages but you can petition to have them ignore academic record from 6+ years ago but you’ll need to repeat all the pre-req courses and I’m waiting to hear from Midwestern. I only know specifically about these schools as I’m looking into these particular ones as possibilities.
 
Here is an updated list with information from schools I am interested in and have looked heavily into (Mississippi, Auburn, VMCVM, and Minnesota) and information from recent posts on this thread. Feel free to update and add any schools or information!


Schools That Take the HIGHEST Attempt:
Mississippi State (BOTH for prereq & cGPA)
Virginia-Maryland (for prereq GPA ONLY)
University of Minnesota (Prerequisites)
Iowa

Schools that Average All Attempts:
Auburn University
Illinois


Extra:
- University of Minnesota: ONLY looks at prereq GPA and last 45 GPA
- Illinois: You can petition to have them ignore academic records from 6+ years ago, but you’ll need to repeat all the pre-req courses
- Mississippi State: Technically does not look at the last 45 GPA but may be taken into consideration during the committee review
