GRE less than 1,000 = SGU & Ross rejection?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm sure it happens if you can make up for that in other ways, like a good GPA, experience; etc

I'm sure it happens... is retaking it not an option?

P.S. Twelvetigers, I LOVE your avatar. Charlie is my fave.

A friend of mine had a a GRE below 1000 and a GPA below a 3.0 and she is accepted to Ross for January. However, she has TONS of experience and is definitely going to make an exceptional vet!

I agree with everyone above. A score under 1000 is definitely not a death sentence for Ross. However, if you combine that with a low GPA and little experience...it might not turn out well. My interviewer told me that the GPA definitely means more to them than the GRE. I don't know about SGU. Feel free to PM me with any questions about the Ross application process.

I know a few people from my class at Auburn that got just below a 1000. Thankfully, Auburn cares more about experience and GPA than that ******ed GRE (oh yeah- I said it- it's ******ed 😀)

A big amen to the GRE being ******ed!!👍

I took the GRE twice, my first attemp was a 980 and my second attempt was 1040 [oh-well], and I got an interview invite from Ross University. My interview is at the end of this month so I'll let you know how it goes.

a friend of mine got into MSU with a GRE score in the 700's or 800's. her GPA was something like 3.5, though, and she had plenty of experience. to echo what someone else posted, i don't think GRE scores are a death sentence. what matters more is your GPA and experience.

I asked a Missouri rep and they weight the GRE as 4% of the overall score. I think they look at GPA and experience pretty heavily, though...

I got accepted to TU with a score less than 1000. I got on UTK's waitlist also....I had a really high GPA, so I am thinking that helped me out a lot. Stupid vocab. section!

I got an interview with Ross vet school last June ..years of experience with large and small animals ..overall gpa 2.85 ..science gpa 3.5 and GRE 890 ..3 very good rec letters..and a year of research ..I got denied after the interview before they even got my rec letters ..did not invite me to the Merp program or whatever its called and I asked can I be placed in that ..no our decision is final -was told over 5 times theres other schools and no matter what I do it may be a waste of my time ...the interviewer clearly tried to run me off : ) sooo..applied to St. Matthews and got in 2 weeks ago ..applies to AUA and got interview - said they recommend me to commitee so waiting to hear yes or no ....got interview with SGU just today so waiting ! dont give up if one denies you ..

Hopefully this can be a story of inspiration, even though I haven't gotten in anywhere yet...
First time I took the GRE I did not break 1000.... in fact I was so discouraged that my senior year of college I did not apply to any schools...so after spending a year doing research I decided to crack down and go at it again....and I mean I REALLY STUDIED. while people can definitely have a natural inclination to that type of test, it is also the type of test that long term studying can improve...don't underestimate the power of practicing and practice tests. Exponents, factoring, triangle rules (while its tedious, and yes stuff you have not seen in 100 years, and likely stuff you will not see again, it goes back to high school math and it is all stuff that you can re-learn, and w/ a ton of practice it can become second nature). I got a gre flashcard app for my phone, and anytime I was waiting for anything I would go through flashcards.... long story short, I went from not breaking 1000 to a 1400. So it's possible to improve and I would consider taking it again, if you have the time to dedicate to studying.
I would be happy to share study tips and let you know what worked for me... I honestly thought I was going to have to take the TOEFL to prove that I could understand my native language after my first GRE experience, so don't get too down about it.

I love that line. Congratulations on your 40% improvement!

I can speak on behalf of St. george's University. At SGU the review board is very good at looking at your complete application and taking everything into consideration. Although the average GRE scores of our incoming students is close to an 1100, we do accept students who have a GRE below 1000. Often times these students have a good GPA, strong work expereince, great letters of recommendations, and interviewed well. Some students are very intelligent, but have trouble with standardize tests. These students we have report to our Department of Educational Services, where we can help studnets learn better test taking skills, tricks to help you get through standardize tests quicker so you are not leaving questions blank at the end.

Let me know if you have any questions about SGU.

I have a 990 on the dreadful GRE, and a 3.5 Public Health Graduate GPA, (with a poopier undergrad GPA), but a total of 8,000 + hours experience.

My fingers are bloody nubbins. 😱 I am anxiously waiting to hear any day now... (SGU)

Let us know how it goes (especially for those of us considering applying in the Caribbean) 😉

Hey MonkeyPoo!! Did you already have your interview?? If so congrats 🙂 I got an email saying I got an interview and that they would be sending more information soon (it was about a week and a half ago) about the date and location. I was just wondering if you had any experience with the process. Thanks!!!!!!

I'll be joining the January class at SGU! I'm so excited! It is possible 😀

Congratulations on your acceptance to SGU! If you have any questions about SGU or Grenada, I'd be more than happy to answer them. 🙂

anyone get in to LSU with less than 1000? I made a 980 the first time taking it again in Jan

Does SGU take your best GRE scores from one test date? or do they focus on the latest test date (if taken more than once)?

Although the review board will have access to all of your GRE scores, they will look at your highest overall score.

chyactnate - have you had yoru interview yet? if so, how did it go? i have one coming up as well! 😀

I don't think Ohio State takes less than 1000. I was super nervous, but ended up doing well, so no worries for me. It is listed on their site that the minimum score is 1000 though. I would imagine they make exceptions though.

I know someone who got into Ross with a cumulative around 2.5-2.6-ish and a GRE just under 1000. She had loads of experience, great recommendations, and was really involved in research.

Hello!! I have my interview Feb 5th!! The reason why it is so late is because my interview is in Rhode Island, and I am in South Carolina for winter break so I can visit my parents. I normally live in Mass. When is your interview?? I am super excited for it. The interviewer seems very nice, as we have talked a couple time via email. Good Luck with everything, maybe we will be future classmates 😀

How much emphasis is placed on GPA when applying? What's the cut off point?😕

Obviously this advice pertains to the worst case scenario (re-taking the test and re-applying next year), but I completely agree with MadDog20. If all else fails and you need to apply again next round, the GRE shouldn't be what holds you back. Coming from a bona fide dyslexic who has never done well on a standardized verbal/reading test until the GRE, pounding through vocab was definitely the key for me. (I don't really have any tips for the math section because I ended up not studying much for that and didn't do very well).

Vocab memorizing is supposedly less important for the new test (out of 340 instead of 1600), but that's all I did and it worked for me. The key is to not get discouraged early on... I had (have?) a terrible vocabulary, and it took me almost a month to comfortably get through the first 500 words, then over the next two months I got through another ~6,000 (use the "Barron's 5,000 GRE words" electronic list). Also, take advantage of technology. If you have an iPhone, iPod, etc., they make apps where you download the e-flashcards, which saves a tremendous amount of time. Otherwise, that volume of cards probably isn't realistic to get through.

Ha! I see... well... timeless advice, there you have it.
