Hey guys and gals,

So I have been tediously shopping for some comfy dressy shoes to wear on the tour of my medical school interviews. However, after searching over 20 stores and 2 malls, I have not found anything remotely comfortable. The only pair I did find was a pair of granny shoes that were $100.00.

So....I was wondering to those of you who have gone on interviews (espeically in cold places where there is snow) is it okay to wear a pair of new grey converses with my skirt suit? I know the look isn't fabulous but I don't know what's better 1) wearing my black heels and just dealing with the foot pain, or 2) wearing a pair of converses and looking kind of funny...

Black flats do not work on my feet, they give me horrible blisters.😕😕😕

wear the professional shoes during the interview, change into the Cons for any walking/touring you have to do.

they will notice if you're not dressed professionally and it can really hurt you.

Yes I DEFINITELY will be wearing my professional shoes for the interview. There is no doubt.

I'm just wondering if wearing Cons for the rest of the day (mainly the tour) would be okay. Thanks for your response!

maybe since it's cold you should look into boots. The converses just seem kinda random. I'd keep your nice shoes on all day except for the tour when other people will be changing shoes too

i wore my ugg boots for the tour and then changed back into my heels for the interview. You wont look weird but smart especially if its snowing. Good luck!

Thanks! What kind of boots? Like leather black boots?

you could do some leather boots like the riding boot style if you don't want heeled shoes. Or uggs work just fine for the tour portion

did you get in on the abercrombie and fitch deal on flip flops? med school interviews are an opportune circumstance to flaunt your beachwear.

Yeah, chucks are not terribly efficient at preserving heat. Mine can only be deployed in the spring and summer. 🙁

a lot of tours i have been on haven't really involved going outside much if at all. i've been to some cold places and they understand the benefit of everything being connected by tunnels, bridges etc 🙂 but if your professional shoes are gonna start hurting your feet i would definitely change into something else for the tour. i was lucky and found comfy, short heels that i could walk a lot in, but if i hadn't i would have changed shoes. remember you are going to have to carry the shoes when you aren't wearing them so consider whether you have a bag big enough for boots that you don't mind carrying.

took it back to 1994, we should also post in word art. but no, all med schools say wear comfy shoes but i have never really noticed girls changing from their shoes, even in long hilly tours like the one at Pitt

I changed from heels into these shoes for one of my campus tours (but on most tours I toughed it out in heels): http://www.target.com/Merona-Mireya...rchSize=30&id=Merona Mireya ORing Flats Black

Other flats I have are uncomfortable and have also given me blisters, but these are really comfortable. They are cushioned and support my feet way more than other flats I own. Definitely comfier than my Converse shoes too. Converse shoes don't provide any support - feels like I'm walking barefoot on concrete...maybe that's just me though. If flats are really not your thing though, maybe try looking at other styles at a store like Naturalizer?

i'm no hipster, and i've been wearing converse for ever.

i will continue to do so in medical school.
agreed. and i really dont think location has anything to do with it.

grow up and wear something appropriate
it's not very hard.

i've spent a lot of time in the south, and i have never seen people my age wearing a bow tie.

and i am definitely not anything close to a frat boy. i have some friends who are hipsters, and they tend to wear really fancy leather shoes. the frat boys i know tend to wear skating shoes.

converse are worn by all types where i come from. are they really associated with a particular group down there?

It's not like she's talking about the interview. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be comfortable and warm if you have to walk a lot for tours...

Well, I think chucks re-entered the fashion scene more recently and are thus now seen by those not in the know as some sort of hipsterism.

Where I'm from, bow ties are rarely seen without cumber-buns.

maybe it's just a west coast thing, but chucks have always been the most universal shoe since probably middle school. sure, the rockers would write all over them, but practically everyone wore them.

i think you mean a cummerbund 😉

Since middle school? Try since day one.

And yes, I do mean a cumberbund (forgot that pesky d). As it turns out, both cummerbund and cumberbund are correct.👍

The bowtie usually comes out for formal events like formals, horse racing trips, college gameday.

The standard garb for young classy men in the south is the khaki pant, oxford or polo shirt with Sperry Topsiders or driving mocs. That pretty much sums up 80% of my class. For the bold, you can add seersucker in the summer, nantucket red pants, and themed needlepoint belt. Always have sunglasses with Croakies too.

Just a cultural thing.

we aren't so different you and I. my two go-to shoes at the moment are, funnily enough, grey converse (my first pair in this color) and a pair of blue sperry topsiders.

polos are kind of a frat thing, at least at my campus. i was required to wear them in high school (catholic).

and nantucket reds, well that sounds like nantucket to me.

alternative spellings always get me. i criticized someone once for using 'artefact.' turns out it's proper as well. i blame the british for this problem.

ps your avatar puts me in a trance frequently.

never. never ever ever. i don't really wear clothing where the point of the clothing is what store it was bought it (eg abercrombie, hardy, volcom). mostly graphic tees (i'm a threadless junkie), plain tees.

i do spend way too much money on jeans though.

Thanks everyone for their input!

I have Uggs but they are brand new (Baleys) and I really don't want to get them wet 🙁, my older uggs are the tall kind looks weird with my suit skirt hahahaha...I did remember back in the day when I wore skirts with uggs, didn't make sense, my legs were freezing but my feet were toasty.

Converses are cool, if you say they aren't you are a dork 😛

Anyways, I might check those shoes out someone suggested at Target or just brave it out in my heels.

Huh, I have never seen any guys in bow ties, sounds really old fashioned in a cute way 😀 like guys in uniforms...

I'm a troll because someone was rude???? Makes a lot of sense....

It's so lame when I come on this site for some positive (I stress positive feedback) and I get some douche bag making comments on my maturity. What is this like third grade?

Anyways thanks to those with the POSITIVE advice, very helpful indeed! And greatly appreciate it.👍👍👍

I'm going to move over to the Woman's Interview Clothing thread for some advice there!

you must be shopping in the wrong places. I can find a comfortable pair of walking shoes for way under $100.

I noticed your location. I guess you can get away with that out there.

I noticed you wear bowties. 'nuff said.

Love my Sperrys.

Wow this sounds textbook fratty. Besides the bowtie, which I've rarely seen anyone remotely close to my age wear.
