Hi All,

Hope your day is going well. I’m currently working on my activities section and in order to save space, I’d like to group my publications AND posters AND presentations into a single category.

Would it be okay if I indicate the overall section under: “Publications,” and in the title just say, “Publication, Presentations and Posters?”

@gonnif @Catalystik @Moko @LizzyM @Goro @gyngyn

Thanks

Not on Adcoms, but am a Ph.D. student (heavy science/research background). I selected the "best" examples (i.e. 1st author pubs, presentations and posters) and grouped them together, so I only used 1/15 activities for research/publications/presentations. Aside from listing, I also wrote a quick blurb to reflect on those experiences to show a more personal aspect of myself. Hope that helps!

I personally prefer to see them separated; after all, AMCAS did go through the trouble of coming up with 3 research-related experience types: i) Research/Lab, ii) Presentations/Posters, and iii) Publications. Each of these experience types emphasize a different skillset.

However, if you are truly tight on space and need to group them together, you will be fine as long as it's clear which citations correspond to publications vs presentations vs posters.

Among publications, I would even consider clarifying if a publication was "just" an accepted abstract vs a 'letter to the editor' type of deal. We've had some applicants try to upsell these types of publications as full original research articles. Ignorance? Maybe. But cynically, I think they knew what they were doing. Just my thoughts.

If the Presentations and Posters are related to a Publication (similar/related data set), putting them in one space, and making the relationship clear, is fine. Otherwise, I, too, prefer to see them listed in their own space. If you really, really don't have the space to do this, consider mentioning them in the related Research space, leaving the Publication on its own.

Thanks for your response! I was told that if you mention a poster being presented or a presentation being given at the end of the related research space, it's very easy for them to be overlooked by a reader, within the context of a wordy paragraph .

That’s why I was thinking, if it's better to indicate all of my presentations/ posters/ publications under one space. My publication is an entirely separate research project than my poster & presentation, which are part of one project. Here is how I was thinking of formatting it:

Experience Type: Publications
Experience Name: Publications, Presentations, and Posters

1. "Citation for the publication"

- First author publication

2. "Citation for the the 2nd research project (separate from the publication)"

- Poster presentation at ________________ Conference
- Oral Presentation at _________________ Conference

Indicating a publication on its own is completely fine by me, but I feel that in my case, it's quite generic because the entire research project was strictly literature review and manuscript prep. Doing the above, would open up another slot for me; However, I would like to follow what you feel is best.

If the "generic" publication is not based on a hypothesis-driven scholarly investigation that discovered new human knowledge (eg, a case report or a review article), then one might consider citing it in the same space as the discussion of the project. Or discussing the project in the same space as the Publications citation.

Currently, I have a single space for my publication, which is a case study report, and it's associated research project. Would you recommend I leave this as it is, or potentially consider a section, stating the below. By doing this, I would avoid dedicating a space entirely for this "generic publication." Truth be told, I am not entirely optimistic on whether it's worth outweighs potentially wasting a valuable space discussing very generic things.

Experience Type: Publications
Experience Name: Publications, Presentations, and Posters

1. "Citation for the publication (Completely separate research project from #2)"

- First author publication

2. "Citation for the the 2nd research project (separate from the publication)"

- Poster presentation at ________________ Conference
- Oral Presentation at _________________ Conference

Leave it as it is, with the pub and its project description in one space. Use another space (Presentations/Posters) for your other scholarly output.

I wouldn't refer to your situation as "wasting a space," but rather as highlighting the accomplishment of the first author publication.

Hi @Catalystik

I have 3 pubs and 2 accepted posters/papers I presented at a national conference that I will grouping together into 1 activity ("Publications") for space reasons.

The poster abstracts are available online and are verifiable. Should I put [Abstract], [Poster], or [Abstract/Poster] next to the citation? Or do you have a better suggestion?

Example:
Smith A et al. 2019. Poster Title. Random Association Annual Meeting [Poster]

Thank You

You don't need to use the word "Poster" twice; presumably you will use it as a subcategory or explanation before the entry. But do insert [Abstract] into the citation.

If I did a summer internship with the NIH that culminated in a poster and publication, would it be fine to make the internship an entry under "Research" and then in the description say:

I did XYZ at the internship, I presented posters at these two conferences, and my work culminated in a first author publication in XYZ journal.

I'm pretty tight on the 15 spaces, so I'm trying to consolidate this experience/publication into one spot.

Any insight is greatly appreciated! @Catalystik

@Moko I'd also appreciate your insight!

Yes. To make it clear the entry includes multiple categories, be sure to pick a title that reflects that: eg, (Under a research tab) NIH Internship, with Publication, and Poster Presentations

I'm a current applicant with a similar question. I have multiple publications that have been accepted and that I am sending in an update letter. Would it be odd to link a ORCID/Google Scholar profile in an update letter? Imo it's much easier to view, access, and organize.
Yes.
