Here is the thread. After spending hours searching through SDN, i have found the origin of the gunner meme.

Scholars maintain that the translation was lost many years ago but recently username Flatearth22 introduced the meme on August 5, 2011 at 1:13 pm Central Time to us all. Here is the link.

Alternatively the OED offers this quote in the etymology for the slang version of the word:

(Year 1709) R. Steele Tatler No. 88. ⁋2 The words Gunner and Gunster are not to be used promiscuously‥Those who recount strange Accidents and Circumstances which have no Manner of Foundation in Truth, when they design to do Mischief are comprehended under the Appellation of Gunners, when they endeavour only to surprise and entertain, they are distinguished by the Name of Gunsters.‥ The Gunner is destructive, and hated; the Gunster innocent, and laughed at.
