What exactly is a "gunner"? I've heard and seen this word used a lot in the pre-medical community.

Is a "gunner" someone who really wants to get into medical school? If that's the case, then I'm a "gunner".
Or is a "gunner" someone who's been dreaming about medicine since they were seven years old? Oh wait, that's me.

So, what exactly is a "gunner"?

Do a search for it.

Quick reply : Someone who steps on others, is annoying, doesn't let anyone else speak in class, raises his/her first EVERY SINGLE TIME, brown noses, etc etc.

You know someone is a gunner when they complain about that A- and how the professor screwed their future.

gunners are people i go after, b/c i hate people without personalities.

You will also have those same gunners in med school when you get there. However, some of the smartest people in your class with the best grades will not be gunners at all!

Sounds like you're a bit confused. The people in that post only want to get a head start on understanding the material. I don't see anything obsessing about grades or wishing others harm.

These people are encouraging and offering each other advise, which doesn't match the definitions above for "gunners". Is it so bad to want to do well and to help your fellow students?

Those are not gunners, and I'm not saying this because I am an advocate for early studying (studying early before school helped me out a lot with my calculus classes 😛 )...to me it's not a matter of BEING AHEAD of the class, it's a matter of knowing that a subject is hard and you want to start tutoring yourself ahead of time.

A gunner is that guy/girl in your class who like

If I study my biochem over the summer and school starts and I grasp it, I will not be shamed to help out someone is doesn't understand it.

Trust me, you will know a gunner when you've come across one if your class...you ever had a classmate who you just had the urge to backslap every he/she raises their hand or act like they "know it all" ...or the one you ask to borrow yesterday notes because u were out nursing your sick grandma but the gunner refuses to give it you claiming they missed that class also (but uknow damn well they were THEREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE +pissed+ ...hheeheh my little vent)

But don't y'all think there are LEVELS of gunners? For instance, there are those who *secretly* wish that others would do badly on tests, but who aren't that explicit about it. And I do see how the thread about studying early might be confused with gunner-like behavior...

A guy in an advanced bio class during finals:

After just 30 minutes in the test, walks up slowly but making sure everyone else is noticing, gives the test, turns around (slowly again) and says while walking out "like taking candy from a baby".

Kinda make me feel like s**t considering that i was struggling, had papers all over the desk and pretty much had about 50% of the exam answered.

Is that gunner or not ? 🙂

 that's wicked ...I've seen people like this before (except for the "like taking candy from a baby" part)....but it's sooo annoying!!!!
That was funny though...

thanks for this post sarahgm... i can definitely see levels to being a gunner... but if i've offended the SDN family, my apologies

I never really heard of the term "gunner" being used in undergrad. It was more of a big label in med school.

while we're on this topic, lemme ask a question...
i'm the kind of person who likes to answer the professor's questions, whether out loud or to myself, mainly because it helps me stay awake and pay attention in class. does this qualify as gunner behavior?

well, it depends....are they rhetorical questions? we used to have this one girl in class who would either raise her hand or just straight up answer EVERY SINGE QUESTION the prof. asked...rhetorical or not....and the prof. would look annoyed...the question is, didn't she get that it was annoying the professor? i mean, if she's that intent on sucking up, why wouldn't she notice that? i never understood that...

When I was TAing anatomy last semester, I had this one student who used to answer every single question I would ask my students. At one point I got so frustrated, that I began to tack on: "....except you (while poiting at the gunner)." to all of my questions (I'm a socratic TA). She eventually got the point but it was still very difficult for her to keep her mouth shut. Later, when I was more comfortable with my group, I began to embarass her infront of the class by rediculing her when she wasn't able to answer a difficult question that I would deliberately only ask her. I know it was mean, but it was all fun and games.

Uhh, WTF? You must be the worst TA ever. 🙄

In lecture, I agree its annoying if someone is overenthusiastic, but in recitation, thats where students get their chance to get actually interact with the material as opposed to being fed it.

As a TA myself, you have to deal with all kinds of students. Some are overly excited, some wont talk unless you force it out of them, even though both groups might be of equal intelligence. In any case, why not just call on someone else who raised their hand. If no one else in class is willing to answer, then she might as well be the one to do it.

And embarassing her? Grow up. You seriously have some power issues. She's a student for god's sakes. It was probably all fun and games to you, but it almost assuredly wasnt for her. I hope some professor pwns you like you did her, and maybe you'll see what its like.

You can make fun of a peer in your year or whatever if theyre being annoying, thats just a part of being immature/a college student. But to abuse someone from a position of authority for SIMPLY ANSWERING TOO MANY QUESTIONS is just plain disguting.

For the love of god, when did answering questions become a CRIME. If anything, reserve your ridicule for the cheaters in the class. Socratic TA my arse, you're just a Crappy TA with ego issues. To be honest, I think smartreader is more of a gunner than the student, because to insult someone from a position of power for simply being enthusiastic and well prepared for a class is definitely one of the hallmarks of being an underachieving yet arrogant gunner jealous of others success.

I think the best definition of a gunner is someone who is a kissass and who does not have a life or interest outside of school/grades.

I bought myself a copy of Netter this past summer ($40 off of bn.com) while I was working at an ME office. I figured it would not be a bad idea to thumb through it every night so that I wouldn't feel like an idiot if a doctor asked me a question during an autopsy. Plus, I would be driving home thinking about an autopsy and wanted a reference material if I did not know what a certain structure was. However, I would not consider myself a gunner because of that. If you are genuinely interested in the material, or feel that you would benefit from studying early, that is not a gunner in my mind.

you ridiculed and embarassed her? WTF. asking people other than her if they know the answer is fine, but you went overboard. And I do speak from experience TAing.

Perhaps I should have better expressed myself in the above post. In no way was I being malicious or hurtful to the gunner in question. You see, my sarcasm tends to shoot through the roof when I am TAing. In my case, it made for a great learning environment as people loosened up and became more confortable with me and the material they were learning. The ridicule and embarassement was a two way street during my sessions; how can it not be when there is a dead penis flailing in front of your face while you are trying to demonstrate the medial and lateral genicular arteries? The fact of the matter is, I encouraged people to be casual and informal and sometimes this meant redicule or embarassment, but ALWAYS in a playful and humourous manner. So when I say "it was all in good fun" it Really was. And for those of you who think that all of the above is BS then perhaps you should know that by the end of the semester, the gunner and I turned out to be good friends. As for my TA group, it grew into the largest one in the class as we neared finals, perhaps because I have something more to offer than a bland 4 hour session of 'point and identify '.

apologies. I take back what I said about embarassing and ridicule. said it without realizing that she understood that you were just joking..

No need to apologize Rendar, I should have been clear about it from the get go.

I've never seen any gunner be that obnoxious. I honestly hope to God you never end up as a professor. Abuse of authority sickens me.

The Team Physician at [insert D1 program here] is named Gunnar

He's a great guy tho, DO, might I add.
