Hi All-

This past weekend I received a letter from GWU stating that I am in the "upper echelon" of their alternate list, and that based on past precedent, it is highly likely that they will be offering me a place in their entering class.

Has anyone else received this letter? Has anyone else ever heard of anything quite like this?

Thanks in advance for everyones insight!

Yes, I received this exact letter yesterday. I equated it to being on a high priority waitlist. Anyone know if they have sent out this letter in year's past?

...I third that...I am also in the "upper echelon" of this "organic and fluid" alternate list..

However promising this sounds..the agony still pursues...still have to wait for that acceptance letter....

chika

Got that letter yesterday too. However, there is another thread where some people have said their letter did not have the "upper echelon" line. So it seems likely that this is analagous to a high priority or top tier waitlist.

Yep.
Count me in on the "upper echelon" club. Received mine yesterday. 👍

Hey you guys on the "upper echelon,"

GW sent out finacial aid info with this also...do you think its wise to start filing FAFSA for them..?

Chika

Getting the FAFSA in wouldn't hurt. I will probably get mine in by the end of the week. The application isn't too horrible if you have the info handy.

Yeah I already did my FAFSA. You can put up to 6 schools on it, so just fill in the schools you think you have the best chance of going to.

Fred,

There wouldn't be this thread, if most of us didn't consider the school as our top choice...Silly!! 😛

Hello All,

I was wondering for those who did get placed in the "upper echelon", did you submit a letter of interest/intent prior to getting this letter? I didn't get an "upper" letter but still haven't submitted a LOI so was curious as to if there was a correlation between those who where placed on the upper tier because they sent in a LOI.

Thanks!
Sam

when did you submit the LOI? before your letter arrived and after the interview? I guess im asking how long after your interview.... =)

I sent in a very solid letter of intent within two weeks of my interview.

Just a thought--(I am sure no one has the actual answer to this question) How many applicants do we think have received the letter indicating that they are in the "upper echelon" of the waiting list and it is "highly likely" that they will be offered a seat in the entering class vs. those who received a standard letter notifying them that they are on the waiting list?

Yeah I had the same thought. I got the "upper echelon" letter and it almost sounds as if they're saying "hey, we'll have a spot for you post May".... which would mean whatever the number of letters they sent out, I'm assuming they're expecting to take everyone off it because they do have another waitlist that people are hoping to get off right?

As for the LOI... I interviewed back before November and didn't send a LOI in and still got a priority waitlist letter.

I submitted a strong LOI BEFORE my interview...I think it definitely helped me to get to the "upper echelon."

Shorty..I hope you are right...Come May 15th, I hope to receive another letter in my mailbox...!!

But do you think there was a reason they asked to submit a letter to them by April 15th..maybe their waitlist starts moving by then...and are able to offer admission...? (I am rooting for April 15th with all my heart!)

They asked you to submit a letter to them by April 15th??

Yes, GW asked in the upper echelon letter for notification prior to April 15 if you intend to remain active on their alternate list. I also took this as a good sign that some positions may be available prior to May 15, but who knows.

My letter says im simply on the waiting list and that it is impossible to rank people on the waitlist. I guess those bastards are lying if you guys got upper echelon.

No I don't think they technically "rank" people on the list. They may GROUP them, but thats about it. A lot of med schools group their waitlists. Its all semantics.

To Chika: I think they want a letter from us by April 15th so it gives them time to sort through our files again. A letter takes much more initiative then just checking a box indicating a continued interest. Whatever the case, I'm on a billion waitlists and have yet to get an acceptance... so I'm hesitant to believe that even this "upper echelon" lingo is any more of an advantage.

I hate this process.

~A very jaded Shorty

My letter said to call them AND write a letter. When I called, they told me that the waitlist probably won't move until mid-may and that most waitlist action is done by the end of June, although a few people might be plucked off in July and/or August. So April 15 seems like not so much, which is sad for those of us with significant others who are trying to make plans.

Here are my rambling thoughts on the "upper echelon" grouping and waitlist movement.

As a general group, folks on SDN seem to be a bit more motivated and perhaps driven than a standard applicant. Because of this, I suspect that a larger number of those on SDN received the upper echelon letter than those who aren't on SDN. When I spoke with the admissions office earlier in the week, they told me that there was a distinction between the group sent the original waitlist letter, and those who received the upper echelon letter, so it isn't just a fun bit of sadism for the admissions office to delight in.

Waitlist movement will probably occur anytime the interviews start winding down, which is most likely going to be before May 15. At that time, there will be a lot of people with multiple acceptances to JH, GW, GT, Md, and Howard. Everyone has their own reasons for choosing a program, and that means a lot of decision making. For example an applicant who has been accepted to GW, Md, and JH may choose Md because of cost or JH because of the reputation. In most cases, applicants aren't struggling with the decision up until the 11th hour of May 15. We all just have the tendency to put things off until we really have to make a decision. Filling up the various classes seems to be like one of those puzzles where you move the little squares around until the picture is complete.

These theories are what I've been making my decisions on. If they seem way off or delusional, be sure to let me know.

Eric,

You are not delusional..I think you are definitely right..the movement of the waitlist is dependant upon a lot of reasons and you nailed them.

While all of us would like to get off this waitlist as soon as possible, I think we all have to wait it out from now till the end of June (I believe one last person interviewed today). Because we are on the top of the waitlist, we are likely to hear before all the other waitlisters. Even then, it seems like agony to have to wait that long..

I truly hope that their list really does move and that all of us do get in..

chika

Great thoughts Eric and Chika-

It would be great if the "upper echeloners" from SDN all got into GW. Then it would be imperative to throw a big upper echelon rager at one of the cool Foggy Bottom bars 🙂

FYI, I spoke to a couple of my study buddies today... both were accepted off of the waitlist and neither received the letter you all received... patience my friends... patience 🙂 I'll be comin' to that upper echelon party come August.
Fred

Fred,

To come this close and be still hanging on is agony..but you are right... We can do nothing but patiently await that holy acceptance letter.

When did your friends hear from GW about their acceptance from the waitlist, do you know? It would answer our questions on the timeline...(yes i can't be patient).

chika

Fred-

Thanks for the insight concerning your buddies off the wait-list who currently attend GW. Good things come to those who wait..And of course, you will be invited to that uper echelon party come August 🙂

GDubb,

As you know, I didn't get a "upper" letter either, but I'll still invite ya anyways!!!!

Besides, there are better bars in DC than those in Foggy Bottom. Trust me on this one, kiddos.

I might be joining your party! I interviewed about 6 weeks ago and havent heard anything. Do you think that means on on the waitlist? Has GW filled its class yet?

It could mean that u are on the waitlist...but am not too sure of that. I don't know if their class is filled because I was reading some ppl are still getting acceptances. Also their last interview (i finally confirmed) is on April 8th. That piece of info only adds to the confusion..

chika

Have any of you on the "upper echelon" of the list called and sent in a letter yet? I just called, but they are supposed to call me back. What exactly are they going to tell me? Hey, write a letter, have a nice day?

Are you sure that the last interview was on April 8th? I interviewed March 3rd, and they told me that our week was the 2nd to last week of interviews...hmmm...ALso, where are you reading that ppl are getting acceptances?

I called, and it was a bunch of questions: do you still want to go to GW? Why? What have you been up to? Do we have an updated transcript, etc. Then they ask you to send a letter reiterating your interest. There's also a chance for you to ask questions. I think they're just trying to get a feel for who's serious on the list and who's just kind of there, but doesn't really want to go.

so we were supposed to call them and then send a letter?!?! i just sent a letter. hmmm, ok need to re-read their letter.

did everyone else call?

ahhhh...craziness.

i looked at my letter. it didn't say to call. prolly b/c i'm not upper eschelon. 🙁

anyway....any new news?

I don't think that we have to call...

My letter says to write them a letter expressing my interest...and that's all...
Unless someone knows differently?

Just wanted to wish you guys good luck with the GW waitlist. I'm just waiting for my financial aid package, but I will most likely withdraw before May 15th.

i was also waitlisted at GW but its not the upper echelon one just the regular alternate..i guess all we do is wait. anyone know if ppl get accepted off teh alternate or is it pretty much just the upper echelon ppl

I read somewhere they take about 40% of their class from the wait list...that probably means more people than those who are on the upper echelon list..then again, I don't know how many ppl are in the upper echelon of the wait list..
