Gynecologic oncology

I'm an M1, so I recognize that my career choices might change over the next few years, but at this point I want to go into OB/GYN. I was wondering about the gynecologic oncology fellowship. I realize that I probably wouldn't be applying for one for many years, but I still have a couple of questions.

When would I apply? How long is it? How available/competitive are spots? I've tried to research this some on my own, but FREIDA isn't being very helpful.

When would I apply?

One year before finishing your OB residency (PGY3)

How long is it?

3 years of post-residency clinical training , so a total 7 years after medical school.

How available/competitive are spots?

Very competetive...but less than Fertility-Endocrinology.

I'm not so sure that this is true. There are only roughly 30 fellowships available. Gyn-onc is insanely competitive- and I know this after having spoken to a very well known gynecological oncologist when I took an elective in gyn-onc during third year of med school. This fellowship is as difficult to get into as surg-onc is for surgery.

Get involved in research now if you are really interested in this field.
