Just out of morbid curiosity, in what form do decisions go out? Snail or email? Big envelope or small?

A friend of mine who got in last year received a large envelope around the 15th of March. Best of luck everyone!

hmmm I guess I could be wrong, but I really thought I remember her telling me about how excited she was when she got her "big HMS packet"

do a search for last year's thread...

edit: did a search, it does come in a big envelope! goodluck!

Hey guys, first year New Pathway here. The envelope was a big one, both in size and in meaning. I think it was yellow. Also, not to add any anxiety to the pot, but I remember that the rejections went out a day or two before the acceptances. Anyways, good luck to all of you and let me know if you have any questions.

wow, scary :scared: i think the waiting is going to ruin my spring break next week.

I wish we had a more specific date for when decisions will be released....you know, to give us a focal point for our anxiety.

Thanks, Bostonguy. Hmm I thought I read somewhere that all envelopes are the same size, so that the rejected ppl actually read their rejection letters? ... ah well ... wish I could just get an email rejection and have the anxiety over with *cringe*
And so it's not crimson-colored huh, it's yellow.

Please let us know if/when you hear when the letters are sent out! 😛 many thanks!

why not an acceptance??? stay positive, its the best remedy to "march madness"--and i'm not talking about NCAA hoops, but non-rolling decisions.

hey guys,

overhead from an adcom member in the hallways of hms today: all decisions have been made and will be sent out within the next week.

best of luck!

Either way, impossible to relax now!!! Good luck to everybody.

AHHH!!! never thought this time would EVER COME. i can literally FEEEEEL the cortisol levels rising...or maybe that's the caffeine that i chugged because i couldn't sleep last night, kept awake by the torture that is applying to med schools...

so anyway, i check in on this thread every once in a while, finding comfort in solidarity...and though i haven't commented too frequently, i feel somewhat connected to you SDNers, in thise weird distant-cyber-strangeness sort of way...SO BEST OF LUCK TO YOU ALL, and i hope we can all be classmates next year!!! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I feel your anxiety ... *cringe* *cringe* *cringe*
So is harvard everyone's top choice here? I've got my eyes on HST - it's so unique ... holds a special place in my heart, haha (oh gosh, I'm having a crush on a school/program, can you believe it!) ... didn't think my NP student interview was too hot, sigh.

I just hope that rumor is true, and you guys on the East Coast start hearing soon. Sadly, I'm tired of waiting, and I interviewed in February. Good luck all, hopefully they are actually coming sometime in the next week.

Somebody probably answered this already..so I apologize in advance. Do they send the letters/packets to the "current" or "permanent" (home) address?

Harvard is the worst for giving secondaries only to get their secondary fee$. Good luck regardless.

Agreed...I interviewed in October...and have been waiting for what feels like forever. We'll see...😎

Hmmm that financial aid website is going to get mighty tempting in the upcoming days....

What on Earth makes you think that Harvard needs to get $$$ from secondary application fees?

I don't know where that secondary fee comment came from. Do they claim to screen secondaries? Not that I know of. And, they give ~1,000 interviews, so it's not like a lot of people aren't getting a chance.

Wait, why did you chug caffeine if you couldn't sleep anyways?

I hate this waiting...but at least harvard is non-rolling. Other rolling schools that I interviewed at in october still haven't givien me a decision, and that's really frustrating. :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Hey guys...is this too boring to answer or do you just not know the answer?😉 🙂

I have no clue, sorry.

whatever address you specified as your mailing address. if you are in college and had your interview letters, viewbooks etc. mailed to your college address i.e. mailing address, you will probably get it there. also, picking up the phone and calling to make sure they have your correct address is really easy. the folks at the admissions office are really friendly, especially if you tell them that you would like to confirm the mailing address. it is not unreasonable to ask them to check.

anxiety= :barf:

From what I've been told, researchers at most top academic centers are told they need to fund themselves. They do this primarily through NIH funding. While a very small chunk of this goes back to the medical school, the bulk of the free funding that gets used by the medical school on a yearly basis to do things like get cadavers, hire staff, etc. (i.e. its operating budget) comes from tuition fees and other random expenses (like applications). Thus, while HMS researchers may get one billion NIH dollars a year, the amount of that the medical school sees is relatively limited.

There are only a handful of schools that screen pre-secondary. If you want to complain about a school's fees, how about Georgetown's 12,000 applicants at $135 a pop?

12,000 x $135 = $1,600,000

Of course not everyone will turn in the secondary fee, but still. Yikes!

My interviewer told me that HMS has an ungodly amount of money, lots of it coming from real estate the HMS corporation bought 20 billion years ago. He said that it's enough that lots of board members have proposed making HMS totally tuition-free, but that even more of the board members are obsessed with hoarding money. either way, they have a crapload of money and the old give-it-away vs. save-it-all-up fights are ongoing at harvard.

did anyone get accepted yet?

remember to withdraw your apps from washU once you get accepted!!! :d

I don't doubt that about the NIH funding, but I am sure that HMS receives some "generous" contributions from alumni, benefactors, etc. They certainly did not look like they were hurting for money when I was there, and since HMS has only an average secondary application fee, with fewer applicants than a lot of other schools, I doubt this is a significant contribution.

march madness i tell you - and i'm not talking about ncaa

We should name this month MARCH MADNESS here on SDN and make it official.

I am 99.99% sure I will be receiving a rejection later this month. I actually told one of my interviewers they shouldn't accept me (my exact words were something like, "If you want a student that is going to spend 20 hours a day at school, that is not me. I am dedicated but I have a life outside of school.") Interview suicide. No medical school wants to think you’ll have a life outside school. I guess I figured I had nothing to lose so I was totally honest (to the point of having verbal diarrhea).

That said, the .01% chance still makes me nervous.

I wish we could start a countdown on this thread. If only Harvard would be more open with us about when we will find out. I almost feel like I'm getting nervous for nothing😳

I didnt even apply to harvard and I am still nervous for all of you! haha this has been a stressful week... good luck to all on harvard :luck: ...boston rocks!

I actually told one of my interviewers they shouldn't accept me.

Whew, I'm not alone. Except I said something more to the effect of, "I don't think I'm Harvard material."

Pa-Pow!

Wow - what did the interviewers even say that illicited that response from you? Depending on how you said it, I would've considered that to be quite aggressive and shallow (paininting harvard with that broad brush). It's cool to be honest, but no need to be confrontational which is how I'm reading it. However, again, depending on the entire situation - I may have also thought, she's young, got a lot of potential, and she's a bit naive and made a mistake with this aggresive statement - it's not what you said but how you said it.

More like a countup. Who knows when those letters are going out. I am thinking about withdrawing because they haven't sent letters out soon enough. Might have to give them a call...

"Look, I understand that it is a difficult process, but you are just not showing me results. I'm sorry, but I have to go a different direction."

If any Harvard admissions committee members are reading this, I am just kidding. I love you.😳

Lol, this is kinda what I said during my WashU interview. Guess how that worked out? (Actually, I don't know yet but .01% = 0.0%)

I don't think it was shallow. She wasn't accusing Harvard of wanting people who have no lives out of school in her statement. She was simply describing herself honestly.

it's not what you said but how you said it.

I actually think the way she said it was perfectly fine. She's absolutely right, too! Harvard isn't looking for 160 students who have no lives out of school. In fact, Harvard doesn't really aim to train "doctors" in the practicing sense. They want people who will take their training in the medical field and go out there and change the world.

Community service, public policy, research, professorships, etc.

I think that if you walked in and said "I'm going to spend all my life in class, and then work 3 days a week as a hernia surgeon at my local Kaiser" they wouldn't be quite as ecstatic.

Come to think of it, I've never been treated by a Harvard doctor. I don't think many of them practice in "regular" (non-affiliated) hospitals.

this would all be so much easier if someone (parents, friends, coworkers, random people i barely know) didn't ask me every five minutes if i've heard from harvard yet. no one seems to care as much about all of the other great schools. i think i could deal with the disappointment of a rejection much more easily if i wouldn't have to tell all of those people about it.
thank god for ben and jerry's, keeping me semi-sane through all of this.
