Here's a question for everyone. Just thought I'd throw it out there:

Assuming solid, well rounded EC's and essay, what numbers do you think you'd need to get an interview at Harvard? (GPA and MCAT #s)

(I know it's difficult to classify this stuff because every applicant is different, but I'd just like to know everyone's best guess.)

Not that much, seeing as harvard has a pretty reasonable mcat and gpa average compared to the likes of Wash U and Duke.

you would need to be around the avg for their mcat and gpa. higher is better.

You would need to have around their averages maybe a little more on the MCAT and be from an IVY or high named undergrad. Unless you are URM. Besides those few individuals there are very very few that get in from non name state schools.

If I remember correctly, Harvard's average MCAT is somewhere around a 35 or 36, and the GPA is about 3.8... but definitely correct me if I'm wrong. My personal opinion (derived from anecdotal evidence 😉 ) is that Harvard Med admissions is a crapshoot... maybe one of the biggest crapshoots of 'em all. To be honest (and i know this sounds a bit mean, so forgive me), I was completely baffled to find out who (among the people I knew) got in. They were not extraordinary by any means, not in leadership or even in academic performance. I felt I knew them well enough that I'd know if they had any outstanding nonacademic achievements.... but who knows... maybe they had clandestine Pulitzers or something. Of course, I don't mean to deny the merit of everyone who got into Harvard, by any means - I'm sure they're wonderful in ways that I don't know about... but I'm also sure there were tons of equally wonderful applicants who did not get in... It's just an inevitable artifact of selecting 120 or so people out of thousands.

Do you think the Harvard HST admissions would be somewhat less of a crapshoot than the NP admissions, since most of the HST admits have science majors and (I would guess) are selected for their GPA/MCAT/science backgrounds to a greater extent than NP? Can anybody who has dealt with Harvard admissions comment on this?
