Has anyone heard from VMRCVM?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I, too, am having an awful time finding a place to allow my dogs. Seems most places have a 60 lb total limit (or less!) and my dogs are 70lb total when on a diet at my moms place. Guess I should have let the SPCA take off my Jasmine's leg - though i doubt her front leg weighs 10 lbs

Check out Windsor Hills for those looking to have dogs, especially big ones. Its a VERY quiet community a few miles off main street. They have decent floor plans and are very pet friendly, with a dog park on site and everything!

My friend lives there and loves it!

Also, if you have an excellent relationship with a vet, all they do is call in to verify weight so you can get around it. My dog was 64lbs and stayed in an apartment that was only supposed to have a 40lb dog with no issue, and that was with maintenance men in and out of the apartment.

Hope that helps!

I had trouble finding a place last year, too, but now have an AWESOME one with the best landlady ever! Try looking on craigslist for awhile - that's how I found mine.

Yep, craigslist, VTOCH, and the OTS service - looking looking looking. I've found some potential places, and I did already contact Windsor Hills so that'll definitely be a backup in case I can't find a house/duplex.
I realllly don't want to live in an apartment again - people above or below you, having to bundle up to take the dogs outside (right now I have a line tied to a tree in the yard that reaches right to the backdoor - it's so easy) I'd also like to avoid those monthly pet fees if possible - but when it comes down to it...anything for my pups!

To those of you familiar with Blackburg housing, I was wondering about when we should shop for a rental.

I am married with 2 ankle biter doggies (<15 lbs each), no kids. Looking to move in around August (thank goodness my current lease ends in August!), but do places rent out early? Should we come down in May or June, or will July be ok as far as choices? Just not sure since it's such a college-oriented town.

I see people mentioning Windsor Mills. Anyone know anything about the Fox Ridge complex?

If you're interested in finding a house to rent, I would start looking now. The OTS housing list is a great place to start. If you want to live in an apartment, I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry. Most places still have spaces when fall semester starts.

I'm living in Foxridge next year... I really like it, but it's definitely your standard college apartment situation. The regular (mostly undergrad) sections get kind of crazy Friday and Saturday nights. I don't mind, though, because I'm living with one of my friends who will still be an undergrad anyway. They have graduate/family housing that is quieter, but it costs more. They also aren't very pet-friendly compared to some of the others.

If you are looking at an apartment, it seems like the longer you wait, the better deals you can get.

I started looking at around the beginning of the summer last year, but didn't end up being able to find anything until around the end of July. It felt like I was really cutting things close, but everything turned out okay. I had some personal life things going on that kept me from being able to commit to an apartment, though. If you start looking now, you'll probably find one faster than I did!

Is anyone familiar with horse boarding facilities in the Blacksburg/Christiansburg area? Looking for a good place to keep my mare!

Thanks!

Hey there! Blacksburg is interesting... you're probably going to pay more for board than rent... I left my horses at home, but I took lessons at Walnut Spring Stables for a bit last year. It was pretty nice, but they don't have an indoor so a few lessons were cancelled for high winds and frozen footing.

I can't speak for anything else personally, but I know of a few farms nearby. A lot of Tech girls board at Paris Mountain and really like it, but there is normally a waiting list. There's also Farmingdale, Easy Wind Stables, Laurel Springs (in Christiansburg) and plenty more that I'm forgetting... But maybe this will help you get started researching?

Walnut Springs changed hands over the last two year or so, and currently the management is terrible. They nickle and dime for every little thing they can. For example - you may pay $400 a month for upper barn boarding (the nice barn) and get use of the ONE arena they have while riding on your own, but if you want to take lessons they will charge you an arena use fee. Even if your trainer works at the barn and does not drive in. They switched their pastures over from around the barns where they used to be, to a very inconvenient spot across the facility where there isn't really any good tack storage at all and upped the board. Maybe I'm a little more critical because I come from CA where I paid $185 a month for pasture board AND my horse got fed twice daily (because they had to), but if my horse is living off the land for 8 months of the year jacking my board from $180 a month to $200 does not exactly make financial sense to ME, since it isn't costing any more to house him there. If you can't tell, I boarded there until right after the management change when there was a huge exodus of us for approximately the same reason.

Farmingdale is pretty rough in terms of board, but if you aren't expecting the Ritz its fine for most horses. The pasture boarding is reasonably priced - the biggest downside is all pasture boarders are kept in one huge 56 acre field. No, that was not a typo. That also happens to be where the cross country jumps - which are in soso condition - are. The arena footing is hit or miss, but they usually try to turn it over at least once a week. The nicest part that I enjoyed the most was the huge field next door you could ride in. I think though that the owner/manager is kind of looking to get out of the business so it may be turning over in management in the next year as well. They DID just recently have a huge strangles outbreak, but last I heard the last two horses were just scoped clean and they're starting the cleanup process.

Everyone I know that goes there loves Paris Mountain. They like the facility and the owner. I've never been, but my biggest detractor was that it was a 20 minute drive in the opposite direction from where I live. I think its like 20 minutes northeast of BBurg, whereas I lived in Radford about 15 minutes SW of BBurg.

Bedlam Manor Farm is in Radford, and isn't too far of a drive. Its a pretty nice facility. When I was last there there weren't a ton of horses being boarded and the upkeep was alright, but a gal I know and trust a lot really liked it when she boarded there.

Harmony Hills Equestrian Center is about 25 minutes down the road in Newport I think, and I actually like the owner of that barn as well. She does a good job of taking care of her horses and students, you can tell they're all very happy. I'm pretty sure they offer boarding services, but you'd have to check it out. It is, however, all pasture boarding. The biggest downside to HH is the huge hill that separates the covered arena from the jumping arena. HUGE hill. On the plus side, you'll have a leg up on your workout regime 😉

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Look around a little and see what you like. Christiansburg, Radford and Blacksburg are all pretty close to one another, so don't limit yourself too much. It more or less depends on how much driving you're willing to do! And occaisionally you can find people who are willing to offer boarding on their own property too.

Yayyyyyy! I made it through the IS waitlist (4/6)!!!

Paris Mountain is nice. I know some people that work and/or board there, and everyone seems very happy. They have field, stall & field, and stall boarding. I would think that they'd have a lot of openings after graduation, so I'd give them a call now, especially if they do have a waiting list.

I don't know too much about Bedlam Manor Farm or Walnut Springs, except that Walnut Springs had a bad reputation years ago (don't remember why). Farmingdale is pretty low key, still in Bburg limits, and there is tons of space. I think they have strangles mostly under control. They were pretty reasonable a few years ago when I was more in touch with the horse scene. It's definitely a do-it-yourself kind of place.

I would NOT recommend harmony hills. They have very little pasture boarding and try to keep that for lesson horses or student horses. The pastures were really overgrazed, I think it's on the expensive end, and the owner is nuts. Not the nice nuts either.

I'm sure there are quite a few more horse boarding places, esp if you are looking for pasture boarding. I would start contacting people now, because places are opening up after graduation.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input! It's been a challenge to find places because I'm not familiar with area and don't know the reputations of certain stables.

I've already looked into some of them, including Paris Mtn which had a great atmosphere and *excellent* hills for conditioning haha, but I don't know how I feel about those winding back roads that I had to take to get there. I can just imagine what it would be like during the winter with all the snow and ice :/

Congrats and welcome!

Just a reminder to all that there is a VMRCVM 2014 Facebook group started already!

Walnut Springs also had a Strangles outbreak a few years back. When I last boarded there they required all horses get the strangles vaccine. But like I said, current management could use some improvement, so I'm not really sure I would recommend it.

Got the call 4/13!! Finally I can get a good nights sleep again!!!

I'm so totally sneaking on during work today...I'm cleaning up my fileshare and working on orientation materials, so I SHOULD be working on the computer. Just not on SDN 😉 I just had to say CONGRATS!! Welcome to c/o 2014!!
