Walnut Springs changed hands over the last two year or so, and currently the management is terrible. They nickle and dime for every little thing they can. For example - you may pay $400 a month for upper barn boarding (the nice barn) and get use of the ONE arena they have while riding on your own, but if you want to take lessons they will charge you an arena use fee. Even if your trainer works at the barn and does not drive in. They switched their pastures over from around the barns where they used to be, to a very inconvenient spot across the facility where there isn't really any good tack storage at all and upped the board. Maybe I'm a little more critical because I come from CA where I paid $185 a month for pasture board AND my horse got fed twice daily (because they had to), but if my horse is living off the land for 8 months of the year jacking my board from $180 a month to $200 does not exactly make financial sense to ME, since it isn't costing any more to house him there. If you can't tell, I boarded there until right after the management change when there was a huge exodus of us for approximately the same reason.
Farmingdale is pretty rough in terms of board, but if you aren't expecting the Ritz its fine for most horses. The pasture boarding is reasonably priced - the biggest downside is all pasture boarders are kept in one huge 56 acre field. No, that was not a typo. That also happens to be where the cross country jumps - which are in soso condition - are. The arena footing is hit or miss, but they usually try to turn it over at least once a week. The nicest part that I enjoyed the most was the huge field next door you could ride in. I think though that the owner/manager is kind of looking to get out of the business so it may be turning over in management in the next year as well. They DID just recently have a huge strangles outbreak, but last I heard the last two horses were just scoped clean and they're starting the cleanup process.
Everyone I know that goes there loves Paris Mountain. They like the facility and the owner. I've never been, but my biggest detractor was that it was a 20 minute drive in the opposite direction from where I live. I think its like 20 minutes northeast of BBurg, whereas I lived in Radford about 15 minutes SW of BBurg.
Bedlam Manor Farm is in Radford, and isn't too far of a drive. Its a pretty nice facility. When I was last there there weren't a ton of horses being boarded and the upkeep was alright, but a gal I know and trust a lot really liked it when she boarded there.
Harmony Hills Equestrian Center is about 25 minutes down the road in Newport I think, and I actually like the owner of that barn as well. She does a good job of taking care of her horses and students, you can tell they're all very happy. I'm pretty sure they offer boarding services, but you'd have to check it out. It is, however, all pasture boarding. The biggest downside to HH is the huge hill that separates the covered arena from the jumping arena. HUGE hill. On the plus side, you'll have a leg up on your workout regime 😉
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Look around a little and see what you like. Christiansburg, Radford and Blacksburg are all pretty close to one another, so don't limit yourself too much. It more or less depends on how much driving you're willing to do! And occaisionally you can find people who are willing to offer boarding on their own property too.
