Hate being broke...anybody else feel this way?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'll take a middle stance. I got no loans either, no income or savings either. I can agree it does suck at times plus you always feel guilty taking/borrowing parents money. (ie. exams, interview costs, clothes, food...) One good thing is it guilts you into not getting hammered on their hard earned money.

OP just needs to get creative though.
CC churning, FTW.

C'mon dude...you "feel bad" taking mom and dad's money compared to everyone else "feeling bad" because they're getting boned by their student loans in 5 years.

If you feel that bad, stop taking their money and take out some loans.

This reminds me of Someone Saying Surgical residency was better than being tortured in a POW Camp.

Preach on buddy !

I think you messed something up here... I would think almost anything would be better than being in a POW camp, no? Are you trying to say a surgical residency is worse than a POW camp?

I have no life anyways so I don't need loans. Taxpayers cover my commute, and I just spend $5-7/day on lunch. I go out like once every couple months. If I match next March, then no more borrowing.

Although I would take a family loan on my first property instead of getting owned by a bank.

I think it was just about the statement being a reality check, like OP needs.

Op I feel the same way. Yes parents pay my medskool. But when a patient with cigarettes in her bag and on ssi gets mad and tells a psych that she is getting a new Dr I notice that I wouldn't even be able to buy cigarettes without getting audited by my parents . Its funny how all the irresponsible students in here pretend like you spend most of your time on st Tropez and have a dime for a gf. Then they use their loans to pretend that they are actually in a better financial position than an 18yo McDonalds worker.

Go see a counselor dude.

Come on, you're complaining about being audited by your parents? What a tough life you have.

Shouldn't be being cigarettes anyway, homie.

Yes, who would want to be a cigarette? Short life spent being either packed like sardines or on fire and ending up in some ashtray at a bar.

This is exactly to what I was trying to get through with my post. My wardrobe is small with quality clothes that I know which will last me through the years of the med school. I mean ive still got the same dress shirts from 2nd year of college because they last and still look new. I don't want to have to go out and purchase new clothes every so often.

Same with the car. Have a BMW at the moment that I got after my Dad got his new car. I wanted to get rid of it for something "new" as in an older toyota, Acura, or Infiniti because they're more reliable. Last thing I want is the 12 year old car to break down while driving to rotations, having to deal with the expensive maintenance (ie brake changes on the car alone is around $900). Rather sell the car now to get the most out of it and use that money for a car that'll last me through residency.

You sound like a brat.

You are way luckier than most.

Allen Edmonds are about the maximum quality-to-price ratio you will find in shoes today. And yes, in the long run you will spend LESS money by purchasing a pair of these and taking care of them than buying cheaper shoes. They can also be maintained to look fantastic for decades.

Wow OP, you have just the absolute coolest of stories.

I'm sorry that you feel broke as someone who doesn't have any student loans. This board will have no pity for anyone complaining about not being able to afford a $200 pair of shoes when they have no student loans and a free (handed down) BMW. So at least it's not personal. Just get your head out of your ass and appreciate what you DO have in life, namely no student loans and a car that you don't have to make payments on.

OP: No point in dwelling on what one cannot afford at the moment. Everyone has an upper limit. Be thankful you have superior taste to most but don't be a crybaby and focus on what you can't have atm.

Believe it or not, many of them are a sound investment. A solid pair of Allen Edmonds will last you much much longer than a pair of $100 (or $50) shoes. Additionally, many (but not all) AE styles are infinitely better looking than the square toed, rubber soled monstrosities 99% of male med students (and males in general) sport.

I'd rather own a great looking pair of sturdy, more comfortable shoes for 10+ years than continually buy hideous Kenneth Cole/Ecco/Aldo/Steve Madden garbage every year or two. But that's just me.

That said, if money is tight while in med school, a cheap pair of shoes isn't a bad stopgap measure; however, the goal should be to get to the point where you can afford to invest in a couple pairs of very nice shoes that will last you a very long time, and look great doing so. Of course, having no debt/loans puts you way ahead of the curve compared with most medical students.

Oh, sometimes you do say useful stuff.

yes be thankful you have superior taste than the most plebs.

Currently a 3rd year medical student. Hate being broke and not being able to afford nice things like a new car, trips, etc etc. btw, typing this up on the phone so excuse the typing errors.

Went to AllenEdmond today and wanted these new dress shoes. Were on sale for 50% off and it sucked I still couldn't get these shoes. Wished I had made better financial decisions in my early 20s so I could afford these things now. I hate complaining because I'm fortunate enough to have no student loans/debt; bit would be nice to have nice things.

An I the only one that feels this way?

Alright, I will trade you now. How about this trade, in exchange for all my medical conditions, I get your perfect health and you get all my wealth, about 5 million or so. Does that sound good? You should pretty much be able to buy any shoe and any car you want.

I'm really shocked there has been so much response to the OP who is clearly trolling...my guess is he is actually poor and in debt and being satirical about his classmates who have it made.

Srsly, not having loans is probably the most amazing scenario possible.

I remember as a 4th year, I had to closely monitor how much money I'd spend at a bar. I didn't want to go without groceries cause I was being a little too loose buying drinks for people :O

I wish somebody had told me to stop buying people so many drinks at the bar when I started med school, then I wouldn't have six figures in debt as an M2.

I usually wear a freshly-shined pair of Allen Edmonds, bespoke shirts from England, custom ties from Naples, wool trousers from Brooks Brothers, and a Rolex. I have actually started calling my fellow medical students peasants.

Still, I cry myself to sleep at night because I can't afford a Brioni suit or Cordovan leather shoes.

Anyone sympathize?

Indeed.

To the OP: Elegant work, sir.

Hark, fellow trolls, for we are in the presence of a master.

If you are not trolling, I do have a serious answer: Yeah, sure. For me, it isn't not being able to buy good quality dress shoes. Going into a scrub garbed field for a reason. What I really get tired of is being the person who has to call in favors from friends, stay on their couches, and not be able to buy someone a nice lunch or thank you gift when I do. That bothers me. It gets old.

I know that feel. I can only buy standard Kiton suits and not the K50s 🙁
