I was wondering what everyone is going to do about their living arrangements. I know some of you have spouses and significant others, but for everyone else, are you guys going to try to live on your own or get a roommate? I haven't had a roommate in a long time and I really like living by myself. But compared to what they give you in your budget and the cost of rent I'm finding it hard to justify why I wouldn't get a roommate. 😕

Althought it may not even be an issue -- I only have one upcoming interview, so who knows what will happen -- I'm going to try to get by without a roomate. I don't see the point in rooming with someone for a few months before my fiancee and, by then, my wife moves to whereever I am at. (Which will hopefully be VA).

Do not get a roomate.
I haven't been around this past week... miss SDN! Anyway, I am probably going to buy a condo in Henderson / Las Vegas area. I thought having a roomate from school might be a good idea for motivation purposes. I like to be around those who study and I know my future school's library closes at 11pm 😱 so can you tell me a little about the problems that I am blind to right now? Thanks!

Unless you are 100% sure that you and your roomate...

1. Have similar sleep/study schedules = example: I skipped a ton of class, slept a lot during the day, studied a lot until 5AM obviously with lights on, music on, etc.
2. Have similar social situations = relationship status, views on drinking, views on partying, hosting parties, etc.
3. Have similar hygiene standards = cleaning the place, loud music, etc.
4. Have separate phone lines or each have a cell phone

... do NOT get a roomate.

Med school is very stressul and you do not have the time to deal with roomates that don't see eye-to-eye with you. Contrary to popular belief, not all med students are your run-of-mill study 6 hours/day, quiet, no partying, bedtime at 10PM, neat, clean people.

And the consequences are more severe than in undergrad. A bad roomate could negatively impact your performance.

You have enough bullshyt to deal with in school- your home shoud be a place where you can kick back, relax, and escape into your own world.

Those are very good points. I started living alone when I begun graduate school. I got used to it, and I don't think I can handle a roommate. It will be cheaper with roommate, but to me possible negative factors outweigh the expenses.

I plan to get a roomate. In the past, as long as I have had my own bathroom and my own bedroom I have found that I can pretty much hide as much as I want.

I agree that ground rules must be set, and that there are going to be rifts..but having someone else around who studies a lot motivates me to study and succeed is a good thing. For me, having a roomate will be a good thing (as long as I can find someone with similar views as I have in the past).
