hello

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OBGYN is the only one that I can think of that the majority of the patient population would be under 50 and over 18.....

You never know. When I would wait for my doctor's appointments, there were many older women who I sat next to. They were there for their yearly and breast exam. A lot of women choose/require hysterectomies later in life. The 50+ population in GYN is huge. Heck, even my MIL who had a hyst still goes to get her boobies checked and to renew her renew her osteoporosis medication.

whats a good specialty that doesnt deal a lot with older ppl, but is not pediatrics? lets say 50+ is old.

haha I was interested in hospice for a bit because I think it would be both challenging and beautiful to help people who are facing the end of their life, but then I remembered that old people are gross.

I'm only being about half tongue-in-cheek here.

StudyShy, you change your avatar sooo frequently, but I enjoy them all. Just wanted to let you know.

People were complaining about the "Friday" one. lol 😉

TS, hilarious question.

Your best bet might be to become an expert on a disease or two that tend to affect this target age group. An example would be specializing in neurology and developing your practice/research around multiple sclerosis and/or lupus. MS is most prevalent in 20 - 40 year olds and SLE is most prevalent in 10 - 50 year olds.

Both affect more women than men, but you won't be doing pelvic exams or birthing children.

I guess you could specialize in infertility and then you'd only see people of childbearing age.

fa sho fa sho. i just dont like working with older ppl. right now im leaning toward peds and was just wondering what other stuff i could do besides peds that doesnt deal with older ppl

PM&R with a Sports Med fellowship, perhaps.

You'd be suprised. There are more and more women that want to have children later and later in life like in their 50s, 60s, and early 70s!

Go for like neonatology or something.

How much is a lot?

Plus you can do various specialties and then sub-specialize into peds versions of it (or go peds and the sub-specialize from there). In addition there are residences in Med-Peds which you get dual certified in IM and Peds.

If you have an AAMC id, you can log onto to their "Careers in Medicine" site. It provides a comprehensive list of specialties and sub-specialties and gives breakdown in various categories including the age of population that a certain specialty treats.

Wow! This is one of the dumbest questions I have encountered on SDN! LOL First of all I am amazed that an organism like you is considering medical school. Secondly, I giggled at the fact that you consider 50 old. Do you realize that you are getting older as you read this comment? We all are!!! A physician is supposed to be a healer. S/he should not pick and choose who they are going to treat. Ageism is a form of discrimination. Just is case you didn't know. I hope that the 60 yo med school interviewer figures this out while interviewing you, if you so lucky to get to that point.

are you serious? it's perfectly fine to have an age group you prefer to work with. if you like kids, choose peds. if you're a teacher, and you don't like little kids, teach high school.

My eyes just rolled so hard I think I hurt myself.

Try not to giggle too hard there.

Oh and plastic surgeon would definitely NOT be the one you want to do. You know how many 50+ year olds want face lifts/boob jobs/lipo so they can pretend they're MILFs?

A lot

do u get mad at ppl when they say they hate their peds rotation?

I'm not a dude! Stop calling me bra!!! LOL

What does that even mean? LOL

thats y i used the feminine bra not the masculine bro.

but why did u berate me? i mean come on. ive already been interviewed and accepted. do u think ill be a horrible physician because i like working with a younger cohort? i mean come on! that was such a vitriolic post! ill be the first to admit that its hard for me to say the things i want to say sometimes, so maybe you have that same problem like me?

come.
let us go.

we can go wherever u like. I SAID WE CAN GO WHEREVER U LIKE.

Thirteeen is a troll.

and can't spell her name.

If I was trolling I would have classified myself as an Attending and not a premed. 😉 As far as the spelling of my username, if you can't figure that one out, I don't know what to say.

Yeah but those 50+ year olds are not that bad looking.

Also, I don't get the OP's question. A doctor should want to take care of everybody. Another specialty would be sports medicine. I don't even know if that is a real specialty but my hospital has a fellowship for it.

Also, some moderator has to ask that user to take down that avatar with the boogers. It's not what I want to look at when I'm eating.

OMG you are going to be such a bad doctor imo...

generalizing is fun 🙂

Ageism is a form of discrimination.

You sound like those frustrated people during the election that were mad that young people actually came out to vote.

thats y i used the feminine bra not the masculine bro.

TS, you always make me giggle . There are many specialties that tend to have younger patients, not to mention many that are explicitly pediatric. I mean, child neuro even has its own residency program, as opposed to having to do a fellowship as others do (peds surgery, peds cardiology, etc).

psych. you could choose your pt. population.

no,that's why you're still a pre-med.

Wut

And I'd have to disagree there, many many MANY 50+ year olds who go in to get implants are not good looking at ALL. For some reason people have this idea that everyone who goes in to see a plastic surgeon is a supermodel who just wants to go from a C to a DD and take an inch off their waist with some lipo. Unfortunately, they forget that the reason people go to a plastic surgeon in the first place is because they WANT to look like that...not cause they do. Not to mention that cutting open breasts and tearing apart faces all day would probably kill somebody's attraction to both of those things....

So unless you're a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills (and even then you'd probably get some bad ones) I'd bet that you aren't running into many hot 50 year olds.

Anyway like others have said specializing in some kind of adolescent specialty could give you exposure to people older than little kids but younger than your 50+ group. Of course then you'd have to deal with messed up, pissy teenagers every day instead of grumpy old people or crazy little kids..pick your poison!

For the record I'd go for the crazy sick little kids cause I like working with little kids

TS, from your thread title I was expecting:

and was surprised to find otherwise. Carry on.
