After being wait-listed and ultimately not accepted to DO school this cycle, I have decided to complete a post-bac program before reapplying. Registration is coming up, and I need help deciding which classes to take.
I know I will be taking gross anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. In addition, I have the choice of genetics, histology and cell physiology. Of course I want to take them all, but I know that wouldn't be practical.
As far as my undergraduate courses go, I enjoyed genetics the most and understood cell physiology the least. I am considering the cell phys class so that I can get a better grasp on the material, which just did not stick in undergrad. However, I think that histology will probably be more useful in the long run. Finally, I know I'm most likely to get an A in the genetics class, which would help my GPA (undergrad GPA was borderline, I'm trying for at least a 3.5 post-bac).

Would I be crazy taking 16 hours my first semester? Which classes would you guys recommend?

🙁 can you what schools you applied with last cycle and your stats? was it because you did not apply broadly?

All three electives would be helpful for medical school, so just pick which ever one you like the most and/or the one you'll likely get an "A" in, which sounds like genetics. If, however, you think might want to pursue pathology or medical genetics, I'd recommend histology or genetics, respectfully. All 3 are pretty low yield on the boards and in real life. I guess cell physiology would be the most practical of them all.

Having done a post bacc with a full time job and volunteer commitments I would have to say don't take classes simply because they "look good". I took classes that were interesting to me, and what do you know, I actually really well in them. I also, like you took classes that I felt like I did not understand as well in UG so I like that approach as well!

My life philosophy regarding medicine is not to do activities, take classes, participate in research because it "looks good for med school" . I do whatever makes me happy and stimulates my interests. 🙂

You're not allowed to say this on SDN. 😉

Quick question, what stats did you apply with and to where? Did you apply broadly enough?
