Hey all-
I know that we have discussed extensively the whole "community vs academic EM" practice (not residency, rather career). I can't for the life of me find the thread. I searched and found a couple of spots that make a reference here and there, but no dedicated thread.
So if someone can help me locate the link that would be great. Otherwise lets start a post here discussing the major differences with regards to hours, responsibilties, personality differences of those who go into each, etc..
I am a PGY-2 (obviously at an academic place), but thinking about the community life. I am really annoyed that I constantly have to call the consultants for everything. I would really rather take care of some of this stuff myself, as long as the pts have the appropriate follow up. But I must admit it is nice to have them when you need them.
I enjoy interacting with med students and residents, but don't see it as essential to my survival/happiness. From what I see the academic lifestyle is pretty nice-rarely move from your computer station to see patients, sign out at exactly the second that your relief comes in with no work to wrap up, even though the pay is less, it seems that so is the work.
What are other peoples thoughts on the issue? Are there any staff out there that have done both and have good insight into some unexpected/hidden differences?
Thanks in advance,
KBrown
