Hello all - (sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place)

I have to do a presentation at short notice on "what factors contribute to the limited life of a manual toothbrush and what measures may be taken to extend its life through suitable material selection and bristle design".

This presentation is controlled more by the dental materials department and material selection and bristle design is important. From my research I think a soft, cross angled, multitufted brush, tapered brush is better - (Is tapered better than end rounded?). As hard bristles cause increased abrasion I thought soft would be preffered - but do hard bristles work more effectivly at removing plaque? Do they last longer - which would you prefer - What is the best design of brush???? In terms of material selection I thought nylon/nylon polyester blends are used but what alternatives are there and whats the pros and cons?? Whats the best to extend the life of a manual brush???

I was also wondering if material selection and design on the handle and head of the brush is important - are longer handles better? What plastics are used? Is a flexible head better?? A small head is better to use??? More tufts the better???? Sorry for the long txt - this is short notice and i cant access a lot of journals right now plz help.... 😱 😱 need help on it all cos i have 2 present it soon.......

Also should i mention bacterial retention in bristles and is that cause to replace brush - is it a source of oral infection??? Would proper rinsing prevent this and increase life of brush - is it relevent to the presentation - any ideas suggestions would be awesome... :meanie:

I don't know how to answer your question, but your account name is incredible.

you would be best to do a web search.... about 10 years ago the JDentRes had an article that the brisles had nothing to do with the plaque removal...I recall several worn out brushes doing as well as new ones....
The longest alternative is the "brushing stick" - I can't spell the arabic.... it has worked well and there is some studies to see if the wood/bark may have some anti-caries effects.

Thanks for your help - I believe i found a study from 2002 stating that for children at least there was no difference in the plaque removal capacity if a 14month yr old compared to a new one. Anyway do hard bristle/medium bristles last longer than soft bristles brushes? It seems Dentists recommend soft bristles. Also are tapered ended bristles preferable to end rounded in your opinion? I found 1 study that seemed to suggest that cross angled tapered brushes (with soft bristles) were prefereable to end rounded soft bristles and displayed similar splaying of bristles. What would you recommend? Once again thanks for your help
