Here is the deal. My science gpa is only a 3.1 and I'm waiting to see what my MCAT scores will be. I'm a volunteer EMT and I volunteer four, 12 hour duties a month. I fear I won't get into any osteopathic schools. If I don't get in should I just go to sgu or should I get my masters and try again?

Fisrt, take a deep breath.

Second, you can get in somewhere since applications are down, at least they were last year. A 3.1 can get you into Stateside MD/DO programs depending on your MCAT score. It might not get you into Harvard, but some 4.0 kids don't even get in there so why sweat it. <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

The whole process is a crap shoot. I know people with 20's and a 3.6 who got into MD schools last year. I know one kid with a 3.9 and a whopping 38 MCAT who got denied at every school he interviewed at. Why? Who knows, perhaps his interview killed him, his scores definitely didn't. 😕

If you are PERSISTANT, then you will get in somewhere. If you don't get in this cycle and you are done with school, find a Masters program that is reputable and can make you look good for the next time. Something with a similation of MS-1 might do you good and get you ahead as well.

There is more to the process than MCAT+GPA. Sure, the better your scores the better your chances at getting the interview. Once you get invited to the interview, the its all about you.

Like futrfysician, I know peeps that did great on MCAT yet never got offered interviews. I also know peeps that are physicians now that got a 16 on their MCAT.

Personally, I consider myself an "average" candidate when it comes to MCAT/GPA... yet I was accepted at every school I applied to... in retrospect, I think my interview was my best 'feature.'

Bottom line is that it is all up to you... If you want to get into medical school, you will. Don't take 'no' for an answer. Go watch "Rudy."
