Hem/Onc fellowship application thread 2010-2011!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Any thoughts on emailing a program you're reeeally interested in but haven't heard from yet? Do you email the prog director of the coordinator? (don't want to annoy anyone if its still too early for this)

I emailed two programs that had already sent out interview invites to other candidates. I emailed PD and CCed the coordinator. I got a polite reply thanking me for the additional information and my interest! no interviews though. d'oh!

programs didn't send any update yet:
Emory University Program
Johns Hopkins University Program
Cleveland Clinic Foundation Program
Case Western Reserve University/Univ Hosp Case Med Ctr Program
University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center Program

Anyone heard anything yet?????????????????

Is it still too early? I am freaking out here, with out many programs saying anything about my application. When is the time to worry then?

I'm so freaked out too. There are so many programs didn't say a single word yet.

Still too early. At least wait until the end of Feb. Email the PC, not the PD.

Washington U, UCLA, UPMC, U Minnesota.

UPMC date confirmed, to answer Cependant's question.

Skyfire, did you just get University of Washington?

Gut onc can correct me on this.

But talking to other heme/onc applicants in the past, it seems like it would be laborious and a waste of time to go on more than 10 interviews. From my understanding the magic number is between 8-10 to match. Heard majority of the people match in their top 3.

I don't know that it would be a waste of time but it would certainly be laborious. If you're a current resident it would be tough to get the time off to go to more than that number anywhere outside of the NYC/Boston/Philly area. I applied to 10, got 9 offers and went on 6 interviews and was nearing the limit of the number of places I could go.

anyone got Interview Date confirmation from UCLA yet? i replied the email with the survey filled out but still hasn't heard back from them 🙁 i don't want to call to bug them either..

I actually spoke to them over the phone as I was attempting to get another interview date. I am on the East coast and well flying across the nation several times becomes really expensive. They seemed pretty amenable to making the change...in fact, they mentioned they could accommodate other dates in their e-mail.

I spoke with Sherri over the phone and supposedly I was approved for another date. She told me she would e-mail me a date during the time I had requested if she was able to gather the faculty for the day of the interview. That was at least two weeks ago. I called her again a couple days ago and e-mailed with the attachment. I'm glad to hear you also have not heard back from her, but it's not good for planning my interview schedule. I guess I should have waited as someone earlier had mentioned they were doing, so that they could schedule them all together.

Anyone knows anything about University of Oklahoma, specifically regaridng quality for training and potential to launch academic career ? Any input would be appreicated.

Any DO residents out there? Where are you getting invitations from?

To add to others:

Interviews:
NCI
GWU (current resident)
UCLA
Stanford

Rejected:
UCSD
DF
UW Seattle

I think UCLA is probably the only new one from having read through the threads.

do u mind sharing your credential?

I am a DO Resident....

Invites so far, in order received: UCSD, Cornell, USC, Fred Hutch, UCLA, Mayo Arizona.

Rejections: Columbia, MSKCC, UCSF.

congrats ! U will definitely match to the best one. Which one will be high in the list?

International grad
Mid tier university based program
Steps 99/99/pass (Step 3 not yet taken)
4 strong letters of rec
2 posters, 1 paper submitted but not yet published
Applited to 50 programs

0 IV, 1 rej (UNC)
Hemeoncbound, it seems you got more than 6 interviews so far. When did you apply? I have similar credential with you(99/99/ Pass and GC) , but only two interviews so far. I applied little bit late, December 22?
Does it make big difference? 🙁

You guys have impressive board scores. I am from GWU as indicated previously. I went to UCI for medical school. I applied late as well...Dec 29th and then UCLA (1/13). UCLA was a last minute decision. My research is primarily from undergrad and medical school of which I got an oral presentation out of it. I have nothing published. I am currently working on two separate projects, but again, nothing published.

Honestly, who they decide to interview and not interview is a little confusing to me. It seems like some of the programs are strictly off board scores as a screening mechanism to shrink the applicant pool while others are somehow able to screen through all the applications. I have no idea what it was in my application. I do have strong letters and although no publications I do have a track record of research and interest in the field of hematology-oncology. I also specifically voiced an interest in academia.

Hopefully that helps. Good luck to us all!🙂

Immunoonc, thanks for explantation. being AMG is a big shot. i do have track record of research too, two poster at ACP, but no publication so far. i think publication matters a lot for IMG. Good luck for all of us.🙂

I find this whole process to be a bit unpredictable. There are many variables, with board scores being only one of them. I applied early Dec, but I really doubt that makes a huge difference. My impression so far is that research (not only pubs, but also interest) and letter of recs play a big role.

Hemeoncbound, Thanks for the info.

ANybody from community based residency programs getting interviews?? Because looks like where you did your residency , community vs univ is cinching the screening process. Atleast that is what I have heard from current fellows

I am from a community hospital, below average USMLE scores, graduated from medical school more 15 years ago, IMG.

So far, got 5 interviews.

Silly question:

Is it OK to take baggage with us to the interview? Do they have room to save our baggage? Or are you guys leaving it in the hotel?

I have seen people bring their luggage with them and keep it with the program coordinator. I did not do this for any of the medicine IVs. I asked the hotel to store it for several hours (asked the person in the front in the lobby). Either way, you should be fine.

Just wondering, but has anyone heard from UT San Antonio (IV or rej)?

Way to go yixa!!!! Can you please share your credentials. What do you think one would need to get interviews being from a comm prog and with average scores. Would be helpful for future reference. If u don't mind please

A friend of mine is in his 40's and from a very small community program. He got 6 interviews so far including MD Anderson, Mayo in Rochester, Fox Chase, etc.

The other friend of mine is also IMG got several interviews including NIH.

Does any one has any idea or insight into how much of a negative impact does it have if you are an old graduate from residency ( Almost five years)?

IMG with GC, 99/93/82
3 Pubs and 2 posters
Mid tier University residency.

Only 2 interviews so far, trying to analyze the future odds any input would be appreciated.

Rejection university of Chicago, invitation Robert wood Johnson/UMDNJ but diffcult dates.

It would seem that would depend on where you got your two interviews i.e. MD Anderson and Sloan? Or two community programs.

More information is needed.

Medical oncology interviews from middle tier university programs.
no heme onc programs

Anyone apply to U of Rochester? If so did you get a email that they are closing for applications on the 28th? What do you make of it? I didn't take it as a rejection, but could it be? It would require some reading between the lines to make that assumption, but who knows.

Thoughts??

Rejection from University of Chicago 👎;

Anyone been to Baylor yet? How long before the interview did they send the itinerary?
And is there a nearby cheap hotel to stay? Would I need a rental car?

Anyone else got the reminder email from univ of rochester? It is very unusual. What about cincinnati, wisconsin, tulane etc..

I got an email from U of r the way I read it is that they have not started reviewing and waiting till 2/28 to do that.
