Hey you accepted/interviewed UNLV folk I have a question for you. I have an interview with the school next week and needed to obtain some advance information (way advance). I'm in the process right now (like I want to in the next couple of days) of purchasing a laptop and needed to know if UNLV was a school that makes you buy one of their comps. I know I'm not even close to being accepted there but if they require you to buy there compurter then me buying a computer is pointless. So do they?

You have to get a specific one. So, don't buy one yet.

Yeah, they make you buy one. It's killing me 'cause I don't have a computer and I'm holding out for when they make me. It just sucks.

Do they at least let you purchase a Mac?

I'm pretty sure that's a no.

Not that its all that significant but that's a big time "that's whack!" from me.

One of the faculty members mentioned that because the computers they issue out can establish secure connections with the school, you can't install whatever you want on them.

If you plan on using your computer for more than just word processing and watching movies, it might be a good idea to have a "personal" one.

That sucks.

indeed.

they make you purchase a dell. i think it's an inspiron. oh, and i think they charge you between $1500 and 2 grand, for a computer that actually costs much less than that.

i'm going to VCU and their only stipulation is that you have a fairly up to date pc running windows and they specifically say NO MACS. i love my mac. i really want to buy another one but VCU keeps telling me not to; they don't grasp that i can run windows with no problems using parallels....

That is true, but most of the students just use an external hard drive with other personal stuff on... that seems cheaper than a second personal computer to me

This might make me look technologically inept but what exactly is a external hard drive? Also, you get to keep the comp after you graduate (cuz you bought it), so I'd like never get to use it for real stuff?

An external hard drive is just extra storage that is not built into your computer. It has its own housing and power supply.

You can store data on the external hard drive but I don't see how it circumvent the problem of not being able to install whatever software you want. I suppose you can configure the computer to boot off the external with a separate operating system but it's a hassle. Computers are cheap these days. You should be able to find a decent laptop/desktop for $400-600 if you shop around.

You can probably do whatever you want to the laptop bought from UNLV after you finish school.

So after I graduate I'll suddenly be able to install whatever I want? I thought it was something inherint in the laptops that made it so you couldn't.

I figured that out on my own (external=outside, hard drive=storage). Forget it, I'll just google it.

We bought a Dell Latitude D360 for this year. It's a fine computer and you can put whatever program you'd like to on it. Most of us have external hard drives to store all of our study materials and lectures. I use mine almost all day every day and it works great. It is going to cost between 1100 and 1800 depending on the upgrades that you have put in it. You will get information about the computer about two to three months before school starts. A link to the Dell website is provided so everyone gets the same computer. Everyone is required to buy the same one so that the IT department doesn't have to worry about troubleshooting a million different comps. The IT department is awesome and they will fix any problem they can very quickly. I'msure there are a few students that will have other comps at home but do what you like. If you love Macs then save up and get one for home.
