Any advice on which schools to apply to if I have a high GPA and a low DAT score (GPA: 3.9, DAT: 18)?

There are similar forums but most ask about low GPA and high DAT scores. Does it really matter which is higher? Don't you just need one to be strong to be a decent candidate?

Also, does anyone think that there are "safety" dental schools?...cuz all of them seem like they are hard to get into.

there really aren't any "safety schools" anymore, but i would suggest applying to some PRIVATE schools with lower average DAT scores (Tufts).

Dental schools like well rounded applicants. 18AA is low for the first round of acceptances and pre-dec interviews. Do you have time to study an get that AA up to 19-20?

Don't discount the rest of your application either, LOR EC's and your personal statement are very important

Is this why you did not receive an interview from Tufts?

I was in the same situation as you. 3.96 and 19AA. I applied early and got into several schools actually. So don't worry too much. I know that generally, state schools put more emphasis on GPA while private schools emphasize on DATs. As for safety, go with NYU. Before you NYU students bash me, I really liked NYU, however, because they have the largest size(fact), and because many end up turning them down due to the high tuition(fact) its safe to say that it won't be as difficult as say a school with 39 people per class and a breezy tuition. 😎

Puerto Rico is not a safety school, that's for sure. Their rejection letter will cut you. Deep.

Your fine, 18 is still a good score. Just don't be a nerd at the interview and you'll be a dentist soon.

18 is not consistent with your high gpa and next cycle it will probably be below average. You are limiting yourself to mostly private schools with that score and would recommend retaking it so that you can open up more options.

I'm the in the same boat also. I have a 3.8 cGPA + sGPA but a low DAT score. Where are the best schools to apply to.

DAT
Bio 19
Gchem 16
RC 16
PAT 21
AA17
TS18

I would retake if I were you. Especially with those two 16s.

"18 is not consistent with your high gpa"

Depends on the college....was the average SAT in your biology or Orgo class 1580 or 800?.....my college was very selective..except for athletics.

I am your polar opposite with scores...high DAT (26 PAT 23AA) and only 3.4 GPA

I would study for a few weeks and take it again

I was in the same situation. I have a 3.9 and a AA18 TS19. If you have been involved in your campus community and have good LOE you should not have much of a problem. As for safety schools, Im not so sure there are any. The schools I thought would be safety schools denied me and my reach schools accepted me. Good luck and I hope this helps a little

I'm kinda in the same boat, should I re-apply in june with these scores? if yes, which schools should i apply to? Thank you guys for all the support.
19AA 21TS 16PAT 16RC 19QR 3.84GPA 3.67sGPA

Isn't Tufts more high DAT friendly? I think the average is 20 or so.

To gmen37(who has asked this before) and anyone in a similar situation: If you have 16's on any of your sections (esp the sciences or the PAT), it's probably a good idea to retake.

It is 20. I'd say that's probably accurate, but the gpa averages aren't bad either. The person that wrote that above was bitter he didn't get a Tufts interview offer, which was pointed out shortly after he posted his comment.

The minimum score most any school will accept is a 17 on PAT, you would be amazed, I see some people on predents with 21's and 25's AA and TS, but 15's in PAT, and it just doesn't fly, I went from a 14 to a 21, It can be done with practice!! good luck

You might want to double check your source since, for the 2011 entering class, the lowest range is actually 11 (eleven) with only 4 schools where the low range is 17 with none over 17.

Oh sorry, just a generalization from Pre-dents, which is not a reliable source.

I think your DAT score is too low... You should try to retake. Stats get interviews and interviews get acceptances. Just my opinion... Good luck!!
