  1. Pre-Dental
Hi, I am a newbie to this site and a soon to be HS senior.( don’t shake your heads) I want to go to dental school after I receive a BS degree. I have many questions but here is my current game plan.
I am blessed with athletic ability and hope to receive an athletic scholarship. I don’t really care where I go to school. Frankly, I will go to the highest bidder. First question is, with dental school in the future, how selective should I be in selecting an undergrad school? I hope to participate in a Div.1 athletic program. I know I have to perform academically in undergrad school. This is a given. Secondly, I have been led to believe that dental schools are more likely to accept an applicant that has graduated from an undergrad school affiliated with their dental school. For example, the Baylor College of Dentistry would give preference to a Baylor grad; Oklahoma College of Dentistry would give preference to an OU grad.
So whadaya think?
I am open to all suggestions.

it doesn't really matter what school you go to - go where you can get good grades and have a good time. and of course to whichever school offers you thebest prospects as D1 and in terms of $$$. good luck.

Some schools have a guaranteed admissions to their dental program, you apply to their pre-dent program, maintain a GPA and get above a min DAT score. (this is what I'd do)

If you can't get into one of those programs, then IMO go to a school where you can get a great GPA. i.e. a 2.5 from Harvard won't get in, whereas a 3.5 from (local branch of state school) might.

Completely just my thoughts.

agreed try for the accelerated 7-year joing programs. see which local schools offer those. although, you would only use 3 out of 4 years for your sport, which is kinda crummy if you enjoy it and want to do it for as long as possible.

i heard that most harvard graduates graduate with high honors...
just hit up harvard, play sports, get high honors and you're set

Not necessarily true. Each school is different. Some schools give preference to instate, outstate, etc. Use predents.com to check out the trends.

dont be so sure about athletics...broken arm or torn ACL and you are most likely out of business. ur best bet...since ur soo sure about dental is apply to a program. I was formerly in a program and its the biggest luxury being in a program at the age of 17 or 18. think about it this way when in a program ur already in a dental school (unless u mess up of course), no need to apply, no need to be stellar, just get by and stay in. From my own experience, its the much easier to get into a program from high school than to get into dental school from ur undergrad school.

Since u seem smart and confident think about applying to the NJIT/UMDNJ program. The NJIT honors college pays for nearly full tuition and housing here is not that bad. SInce i am a RA on campus im kinda biased. even if u goto a no name school like NJIT u can still get into a great school. I got into UMICH dental from here. Just tear up the DATS (esp. the PAT and reading) and get a solid GPA.

In conclusion....."ITS ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS"

I don't quite follow you. What do you mean about applying to a program in high school? ......and when in a program no need to apply?

Yes, injury in sports is a risk, it the words of Jim Morrison "Life is uncertain and the end is always near"

Thanks to all that have responed to my thread, you have given me some good info

I say don't worry about dental school. With that said, don't go and get a 1.5 GPA your freshman year either! Go to college and have fun while taking many different classes--you may find that dental school isn't what you really want to do (even if you've dreamed of it all your life).
