Mr.E said:Columbian is my families country of origin. I'm a first generation Latin-American. For the most part I'm a fluent Spanish speaker with some occasional "spanglish." Good luck to those applying for 2007 and congrats to those already accepted for fall 2006.

Hey! you are holding the first multi-national SDN.polarnut said:cool. now i'm in white club, asian club, hispanic club, and persian club...i still havent heard from the mongolian club. this wouldve been so great for my aadsas application a year ago.
\pre-dent said:Hello everyone,
I was actually born in Mexico, Tijuana Baja California to be specific. I have been in the U.S. since I was a baby. I don't follow my culture much though. My family for the most part is in the U.S.
I personally consider myself to be an American, It's all I know, you know? I love America. I do speak spanish fluently and I know this will help me with my future in dentistry.
I never forget my roots. 🙂
I hope this helps when getting into dental school.I think we can all use a little boost here and there. 😛
I hardly see any Latinos striving to be something in the Medical field though. 😕 Something in the lines of graduate school you know.
It's nice to know I'm not alone. 😱
Mel 😀

What a coincidence, I'm from Tijuana too. Love the bars and the tacos overthere, and I consider myself a Mexican-American since I love both countries
I went to tijuana last year to a funeral and stuffed myself with them.pre-dent said:Hey I LOVE TACOS as well!! DE LENGUA AND TRIPA!I went to tijuana last year to a funeral and stuffed myself with them.
I don't forget my roots nor the tacos. 😛

Very excited and nervous. It is a miracle. I have the lowest DAT score and GPA of anyone I have met who got in. Best of luck to all of mi hermanos. Nice job with this hispanic thread and best of luck to all of you. There is always hope.......

3rdMolarRoller said:Please do not take offense to what is written. Like I said there, I have no objection to people of foregin origin since I am the product of two imports, but I beleive in the good ole U S of A people should learn English.
I think this is a touchy issue that should be disscussed since it is kind of the topic of the year in the USA. But please, we have to keep it in good spirits because I do not want the thread closed.
And by the way, yes I am starting to re-learn some spanish (from the 3 years I took in HS) since many of my patients at school do not speak English. I wish I didn't have too, but I want to make sure my patients recieve the care they deserve no matter what language they speak. Plus, when I apply for an associate position, I can then state I'm tri-lingual 😀
Anyways, congrats on your acceptance and please contribute to that disscussion in the other thread.

Uracil said:I totally agree people should learn English to the best of their abilities, BUT it is the way this issue is being carried by some people. It feels like they are saying "Speak English, you F* D---b A**- and it is then when it becomes a sensitive issue and gets offensive. There are highly qualified individuals (as an example, most of my professors like my Human Anatomy professors who's an MD and Ph.D, and would soon become the Dean of the Medical school) who HARDLY speak English.
One most understand that United States is "the mother" of all nations in the World and it is holds the strongest political power--It's my way or the high way--It also offers great opportunities to an infinite number of people from other countries, not only from Latin America. It is hard to get someone that is 67 or 45 years old to speak a new language and adapt to a new culture.
So, you might try to get people to speak English, but it is up to their motivation, education, etc to learn English...if not, I'll see them working at Wendy's or painting your house....that's just how it goes...so what's the problem, if it is not ours? Again, this is only my opinion.
_veo_ said:I agree with you.. It think people just don't understand the issue completely. They just think hispanics don't want to learn english because they are stupid and lazy.. But that is not true, they are just generalizing over an stereotype . I came here when I was 17 and I had to learn english if I wanted to communicate and study. But my mom is studying right now and it is way harder for her because of her age. It is not as easy as they think.
Good stuff, I bet they are quite proud of you as well!3rdMolarRoller said:I know your situation. My Mom was 16 When she came here and my Dad was 18. From what they tell me it was not easy. Especially the fact that they moved to a Polish community where you could get away without learning English.
Long story short, they both picked up the language and have very successful lives here. But my grandparents which were in their 50's when they came here didn't learn much.
One of grandfathers actually did learn enough English and retired as the VP of Carvel ice cream 15 years ago. Funny, he came to this country with just a suit case and ended up being very well off.
Just goes to show you, if you work hard enough, you get what your deserve.

Ole, Ole, Ole... 👍
3rdMolarRoller said:My point is, I think if you come to the US, speaking english is a major advantage. I'm not trying to get political, I just know first hand its the best route.
Any disagreement?
