So I was looking at the UCLA secondary, and they asked for one honor received and I don't really have any worthwhile ones to speak of from college, but I did won a $1,000 scholarship for a poem I wrote when I was a junior in HS which I am particularly proud of...do you think that would be inappropriate and does it necessarily have to be a college experience?

Do you still write poetry in college? Any high school activities listed should have been continued into college or provided a meaningful change in your college experience.

Generally speaking, HS accomplishments do not go on applications. Don't worry about not having any special awards or honors. You might be able to weave into a secondary response, as long as you continued writing poetry into college.

Yeah. I avoided HS. So I didn't do it. However, someone I know got accepted with a HS honor. It beats leaving it blank, BUT you should pick something in HS that still applies. If it doesn't, leave it blank. It's not worth the scrutiny. This is why the collegiate honors are so important; they tend to have relevance to you as you are now. Remember a lot of secondary answers will be tried during the interview. GL.

I agree. One example that an advisor told me was okay to put is a full tuition, room, and board scholarship that was awarded at the end of high school but obviously is for college. She said that it is generally not a good idea to put one-time honors from high school on the application.

I think if they are relevant to health care, they might be a good thing to put on your app, but otherwise, probably not. I put one HS honor on my AMCAS, United Way Youth Service award, and kinda segwayed it into a description of volunteering.

Yeah, thanks for confirming what I originally suspected...hmm...I guess I am kind of screwed then...I really don't have any honors other than be granted honors for research work on my transcript....*sigh*.....🙁

There's another thread about whether or not one should fill out all the UCLA questions, and there are reports of people who were accepted without answering everything.

Don't worry. Few people have actual, legitimate, and meaningful "honors" or awards on their application.

i just listed a HS honor and explained its impact on me bla bla bla...i didn't know you could choose to not answer questions...oh well..better than leaving it empty maybe? who knows...

The secondary said this before you answered the questions "...Please only provide information you believe is important. It is not necessary or required to supply information in all sections..."

It's better to leave something empty if you don't have an answer for it.

i answered all but one essay in UCLA

I am going to just leave it blank then. I really don't want to have to BS something. thanks for the feedback though.

This isn't an honor, but I played French horn througout high school and college. Since it was something that I was really invested in, I put high school and college and listed the specific ensembles that I played in. I figured that since I didn't speak about it up till the character limit it would be ok. Plus, I wanted to show continuity and commitment.
