hours/week?

I haven't been able to find:
1) average hours per week during different rotations of 3rd and 4th year
2) ave. hours per week during internship year
3) ave. hours per week during residency

80 hours a week is the average and the maximum. Just remember that. However, hours differ just like any other job. Furthermore, some rotations aren't as hour heavy as other ones. It all depends on what rotations you do. Just think 80 hours and you will be fine.

I thought the 80 hour maximum only applied, legally, to residents. Although, I doubt you'de be working more than that.

Ya it does, but I can't see the departments not keeping you for 80 hours just because you're a med student. I feel like they'd expect you to stay as long as possible. "Don't get your hopes up and you won't be disappointed." 🙂

Actually yes the 80 hours only applies to residents...
I talked with some 3rd and 4th year med students in the surgical rotations and they mentioned working 116 hours the week before I was there...
so you will work a lot during ur 3rd and 4th years

Yes, this is true...

The MD's I've spoken to about this mentioned that ever since the 80 hr/week rule went into effect for the residents (who used to work crazy hours and more than that, obviously), someone has to pick up the slack, right? It certainly won't be the attendings and if it's not the residents, then it would fall upon the 3rd/4th year med students to work more than 80 hours per week if need be. They wouldn't be working over 80 hrs/wk for a few months straight or anything, but there will be periods like that and then other periods in which they work significantly less, so that the total number (and consequently the average number) would still be pretty balanced.

But just remember, the med students will be the ones picking up the slack when it's all said and done.
