any advice?
what about mission bay housing?

any advice is appreciated!

Mission Bay has gotten some negative reviews this year...its far, close to nothing, full of construction still, and pretty expensive. The plus for mission bay is that you dont have to worry about looking for a place, its nice and new, and the gym is awesome there.

Check out Craigslist and the UCSF website has a housing link..look under entering students.

Inner sunset: would be the ideal place to live that is within walking distance to campus...anywhere up to about 10-12th avenue is good..although I know people who live close to 18th that walk..takes about 20-25 minutes to walk from there. Parking near this area is scarce and housing is relatively expensive.

Outer Sunset: is farther 19th-sunset ave. near Judah. But its cheaper and you will probably get a house as opposed to an apartment/flat. There is plenty of parking. But you will probably take the MUNI to school which sometimes isn't so reliable...I've been here 6 months and its broken down only once on me.

Inner Richmond: Farther than outer sunset and i think less expensive and not as direct. You may have to transfer a bus to get to class.

Cole/Haight: Expensive and pretty close. Nice family type environment.

Its still pretty early to look for housing and if you haven't already gotten roommates to live with and you want to then I would suggest you wait. UCSF sets up an email list serve for all entering students so you can communicate with ur fellow future P1s before coming here and P4s who will be leaving sometimes will send stuff through that listserve.

Welcome! and Can't wait to meet all the new students! :)

great info! would you know if a good percentage of the P1's live at the Mission Bay housing? I'm thinking it would be a good idea to be situated close to my classmates.

how about parking at campus? I know one student I met during my interview said he pays for public parking on campus everyday?!

is it any cheaper for mopeds or bicycles?

I think about 30 students live at Mission Bay this year..some of them probably wont stay there for next year.

There really isn't student parking on campus. They have paid parking that costs alot ~$20 a day! There really isn't a need to drive to school..public transportatin is great here and even from Mission Bay they have a shuttle. Bicycle parking free as long as you bring your own lock. I'm not sure about mopeds though....

hope that helps (haha i love procrastinating for finals...)

There is a parking lot where you can purchase a permit for $30/month I believe. You then take a shuttle to get to campus.

I am also procastinating studying for finals next week!

CAR Parking on campus (in the parking structure) is $25 per day, which would be pretty big luxury since you'll be in class almost every day (not for 8 hours straight of course....) The neighborhood is mostly 2 hour parking (restricted to residents of the neighborhood, so unless you live in the inner sunset, you can't get the permit and if you park for over 2 hours, it's a $40 ticket. And they are there, every single day, ticketing away. I think it's the major souce of income for SF.)

You can get a night permit for campus for ($10/month, prepaid yearly) that allows you to park from 5pm to 8am the next morning in the parking structure and in designated UCSF spots, but that's not terribly useful unless you plan to live in the library or go to the gym during those hours...

In short, Parking at UCSF can be very painful to the wallet (the SF Parking Traffic people are on a vengeance, i swear) so a bicycle would be reeeeeaaly ideal. Either that, or a getting a Vespa or motorcycle. Or, a $40 muni (public transportation) monthly pass. There is a bicycle 'cage' that you can lock your bicycle at, which is perfect for commuters from not too far away.
Unfortunately, my husband's not too keen on the idea of me getting a scooter or motorcycle.. ha ha......

As for Mission Bay housing, though there are a few P2s who are happy there, the vast majority are on their way out and are looking to get out of their leases. It takes upwards of 30-40 minutes on the 'shuttle' to get to campus, and once they are here, they have to plan their schedule around when they can get home. Not too fun, especially since reading on those shuttles can make you pretty motion-sick. GL!

Definitely! Have you seen some of those hills? ...you can drop your gym membership while you're at it.

Going up 3rd Avenue - yes, the cars are parked sideways for a reason. ;)
