I was wondering if any of the current students at DMU have ever lived at Grand Colony? Is it a decent building? Are the studios nice? Did you like living there? Just a general impression would be nice. Thanks!

I will most likely be attending DMU in the fall as well. I interested in renting a house near the school. I am looking for something near the school that would be safe for my wife and small child. I would also prefer something with a garage that wasn't built during the great depression.

Anyone have an idea of what rent may be? Also, which parts of town should I be looking at?

Thanks.

the houses around DMU are fairly old so you may be able to get something cheap however some of the houses are in the nice range as well. for a decent house i would expect to pay around $800+ in that area. unfortunately i am unaware of grand colony apartments. you can check out www.dmregister.com it is the local newspaper and they have links for housing you can rent. As you may know DMU is on 31st and Grand just make sure you aren't looking in West Des Moines. I am not a DMU student but i was born and raised in Des Moines so let me know if you have any other questions.

also for parts of town you are gonna want to look in des moines west area. stay away from the east side as it is really far from DMU and ghetto. The Drake area isn't the best area either.

If you haven't accessed the student portal yet and want the list of student recommended places, PM me and I will email it to you. This is how I found a place last year and is a good place to start looking for apartments b/c it has the distance from school listed too.

I would tell you how to find it on the Portal, but they just changed it and I haven't had the time learn much on it.

If memory serves me right, its the spot that says "moving to des moines" then you can find the housing for students. I called 3000 grand and have a spot to look into an apartment there in April. I don't know how true this is but they said spots fill up quickly. Something else random that maybe someone can help me with; the woman on the phone told me that my loan "could not be co-signed". Does this mean I have to go it alone even if I get a low approval rating (my credit doesn't suck, but I am not sure I will get 0% repay while in school or not without a co-signer)?

Jamers--

Totally don't understand the last half of you post. Why would you be talking to a lady from the apartments about a loan??? If you were talking about the Stafford loans you get to pay for school + living expenses...no co-signer is needed. B/c you are in school, your loans from undergrad will not enter repayment. You will have to pass a reference check for you to live in the apartments.

I don't know if I even read your questions correctly, but maybe post again and specify what loan you are talking about.

Live downtown...tons of new lofts in historic buildings are popping up as are lofts in new buildings...i've seen prices as low as $550 a month with underground parking for some of the brand new lofts...the reverse commute to DMU wouldn't be difficult at all and you would then be within walking distance to court avenue and the new east village area...just my suggestion heading to the west side will likely be a bit more expensive and add time to your commute...there are some nice apartments on grand/ingersoll but they are expensive and not nearly as cool as the downtown lofts...just a suggestion from someone who grew up in des moines

A lot of DMU students live in the Imperial Apartments, Windsor Terrace Apartments, Grand Prix Apartments, or 3000 Grand Apartments. These are the apartments that are closest to DMU. I think all but Windsor Terrace supports the University's high speed wireless internet.

3000 grand apartments are nice, have a pool, deck, and decent size (my dad lived there for a year or so) and it is literally across the street from DMU. haven't lived anywear else near there. the downtown lofts aren't too bad but so it isn;t a suprise they are really trying for the chicago feel, and the nicer lofts are expensive. also the problem with downtown is the buses do shut down and the cab service is very expensive and sucks very badly. don't plan on EVER waving down a cab or spending less than $25.

This is the question she asked me, "Are your loans co-signed,". Why she asked this, I do not know, this was the reason for the post. As for the portion about repayment, I meant private loans that are based upon a credit rating; i.e., if your credit is not good enough, you are forced to pay a certain amount back even before you graduate. I know this only because I attempted to get a private loan by myself, this year, and was told that I would have to pay back a percentage every three months or so without a co-signer.

That sounds like a completely inappropriate question, but at least makes sense now. My only thought is that she may have been trying to gauge whether you will pass their credit/reference check. You do not have to have a co-signer generally if you have good credit, but I don't know anything about private loans b/c I have been fortunate enough to bypass those **knocks on wood**

Would you mind emailing this information to me? [email protected]

Thanks!
Sean

I wish I was in the same position; I have 58 grand debt coming from my undergrad (17 from the government, and the rest coming from private loans). Right now I am applying to the militiary scholarship program, so, we will see how it goes.
