Houston job market??

Depends on the setup. If it’s basic interscalene, pop, adductor canal. I can do 4 of them in 15 min because the lpn/anesthesia tech has drawn up the meds for me already. I can see the other 4 patients in 15 minutes so I would need to show up at 630am to see all 8 patients and block them all and ready to go by 715am

Some people just take too long to preop.

But a lot depends on the complexity of the case as well.
We get it, you’re just a super duper anesthesiologist! Some people just can’t be as good as you, alas….if they could only have your skills, world peace would be achieved. Greetings!

I’m definitely one of those people who take too long to preop. Ever wait for an interpreter on Cyracom? 8 preops and 4 blocks in 45min sounds like some corners are being cut.

In today’s dollars. Most docs are targeting 300k to live off per year (post tax)

$225k (pretax) isn’t gonna to cut it for todays living standard. Assume you live for 30 years in retirement to age 85 (retire age 55) You will likely need closer to 8-9 million most of it pretax. If you live off 300k post tax. Property taxes in some of my semi retired doc friends homes are 35-40k a year alone. They aren’t giving up those properties till they can’t handle it anymore.
I think you may know older docs than I do. I don’t know anyone who spends that kind of money as a new grad or even 5-8 years out of residency.

I can’t see our spending going over 225k in today’s money once we’re retired. I’ll never desire a second home and the kids are in public schools till college. Maybe college costs a bit but ideally they’ll have some scholarships and go to good state schools where we live.

20k for a 2 week vacation for family is pretty standard I think. Living expenses are fairly minimal even with luxuries of eating out frequently and buying good foods at the grocery. Low property tax currently but who knows in 20 years

We’re in pretty LCOL area so mileage is definitely lower in the northeast or mid Atlantic

Corners are being cut, someone is perchance (maybe) exaggerating their talents a tad (bless them), or @aneftp has mastered the art of quantum tunneling for the purposes of enhanced regional anesthesia efficiency, which garners him an extra eleventy billion ducats to satisfy his life long thirst for newer and better toys, all while doing locums. It’s a dream come true!

Yeah, this whole, you need to live like royalty well into retirement is likely unnecessary and wasteful of our precious remaining time. There’s a sweet spot for everyone, absolutely, but some of these numbers thrown about by aneftp and blade seem almost anachronisms from an ancient time and culture. But who am I to say that a hot pink cyber truck can’t deliver happiness? Gosh.

I can retire now if I wanted to. Keep myself on a strict 225k budget (pretax mainly). I have some Roth mixed in. And live ok for the next 30 years. Add in some social security 17 years down the road and a small pension at age 62 that I have on top of that 225k mainly pretax. I should be good. I will be 80 by than. Who knows. I may be dead before than.

But I feel good. Might as well keep raking up the extra cash. Plus my kids are still a few years away from college. So I think I will work a fuller schedule for the next 3-4 years.

Speaking of hot pink cyber truck. I just got done with some teeny booper concert in Tampa for my daughter. Never heard of the singer before but these concert tickets aren’t cheap. I am deciding before cyber truck or Toyota 4 runner for section 179 deduction end of the year. Both 6000 pounds. So I’m not going crazy with an expensive car.

You know what, I say 4 runner, but seriously, whatever brings you the most bliss is what makes me happy. I hope you have a wonderful weekend with your family brother!

Can you explain section 179 to me like I’m a young golden retriever? For example if 4Runner is 60k how much will you deduct this year?

The rules change each year

For 2024. It’s like a 28k base deduction plus 60% bonus depreciation

Next year it’s down to 40% bonus deprecation

It simple man’s terms. It’s around a 44k tax deduction (16k ish) real time tax savings

I’m just trying to dumb it down for people.

What 4runner are you looking at that's over 6K lbs? Maybe a loaded Sequoia?

I want the 4 runner because it’s the first true redesign since 2009. Incredible run of reliability.

I want the hybrid powertrain they run from 58-75k now which is crazy for a Toyota. It was suppose to be released in August for 2025 year but there are issues. So Dec is the earliest release.

It will be a game time decision. I need to put a 6000 vehicle into use by Dec 31 for the sec 179 deduction.

you can still depreciate the remaining 16k (assuming 60k purchase) in subsequent years for annual depreciation though, correct?

There are many fine details with accounting such as the ability to carry over the deduction to the next year. You and your accountant can discuss what’s your best case situation

I know I am sounding vague. But that’s why I wanted to simplified it in the easiest terms as possible.
