So I just took my first gen. chem. 2 test, and, to say the least...things are NOT looking good for that class. The prof. warned us ahead of time that he's one of the hardest profs in the state, but damn! My chem. 1 teacher gave us test questions like what you'd see on the DAT -- you know, the kind of material that, after you practice problems in the books, is very recognizable and doable. On the other hand, this guy hits you with crap you've never seen or had practice with.

I'm thinking about dropping this course and taking it with my chem. 1 professor during the Maymester, but if I choose to stay in for the long haul, how bad would it look to come out with a C in this course? For what it's worth, I got an A in chem. 1. Would I get a lot of questioning from adcoms about the grade difference?

I had a C on my record and was accepted to 6 schools. It's not the end of the world. Don't sweat it. Just make up for it on ur DAT

Just take some more GPA boosters. 🙄

i had a C in chem 1. retook it and got a B+. I'd be more worried about the effect it has on your AADSAS GPA; mine took my science down a chunk

It sucks especially hard at my school since they use a whole-number letter grading system. For example, if you earn an 88 or an 89 in the class (and the professor doesn't bump you up), it goes on your transcript as a "B" -- which is a flat 80. So if I make a 76 or something in this class, it's still just a 2.0.

Just messing around on the calculator, if I make an A in Bio I this semester and combine that grade with my A in chem. 1 and C in chem. 2, it drops my science GPA to a 3.33. Dang!

I'm glad you mentioned this, because this is DEFINITELY what I'll do this summer if I don't score so hot in chem. 2. Besides, I have to choose some easy seminar class anyways for Bio II...

my advice to you is,
I "don't think" a C can hurt you at all, esspecially if your prof is hard. Of course dental adcoms will view your GPA / single class scores / AND the DAT scores.

If they see you got a C in chemistry but you got over 22+ on the DAT - chem part, they'll know you had a hard teacher and you really learned your stuff.

IMHO, grades don't mean **** as long as you learn your material and kick ass in the DAT. However, the down side to that, high grades and GPA shows that your a serious student and care about your schooling. I guess I sound like a hypocrite here.

dont worry about gettin 1 C...I had 4 C's on my transcript and got accepted at 2 schools...so believe me, 1 C is going to be just fine

Thanks for everyone's input...the thing that burns me up is the fact that the class SHOULDN'T have to be this hard. I know that the DAT is not going to go nearly as in-depth as this guy's tests do.

The test this morning covered the Gas Laws chapter, and there was only a single pV=nRT problem. The rest of them were these "you have this many grams of this, which is converted to moles in this process, but then the gas is moved to a new container of this many liters and..."

You know, stuff that makes you think too much.

Don't get too down about one grade. I know people who had less than spectacular grades early in college but if you struggle your first year or two, you will need to work your ass off to get better but they do take overall improvement into account when they see bad marks.

Thats a relief! I am applying for 2008 and I have 2 C+s and 2 Cs. I hope adcoms can be forgiving :scared:

Professors don't teach you so you will excell on the DAT or MCAT. They could care less about that.

I used to think that it was unfair that all of my tests were really hard because I went to a good school. In retrospect, I realize that the name of your school and your test scores carry A LOT of weight and can definitely make up for a less than stellar GPA. In summary, if you goto a solid school that has a high acceptance rate, you are in fine shape, even if your GPA is a bit on the low side.

a few C's wont hurt as long as the rest of your application is strong.

don't worry, you'll get in. good luck!

I should be okay, then, since this will be my only kind-of bad grade. And I may be able to pull at least a B. Of course, I could just pull out before the drop date, take the class in the summer with someone else and avoid the whole mess...

I wouldn't worry about that. For people who do have +/- grades, there is an AADSAS GPA calculation that factors in only letter grades.

Also, I hate minus grades so I still wouldn't complain if my classes were straight A,B,C...

let's see..i got c's in ...
bio2, ochem1, ochem2, human phys, biochem, cell bio, micro
got into 2 schools : )

hopefully i won't have that many in dental school ... i just did well on my dat's and took so many science classes and have a lot of dental assisting hours, my sci gpa averaged out to a 3.3 ... don't worry! do well in the labs and classes you can, don't sweat the small stuff!

umm... if you're really going to get a C with this prof, but will do better with you other prof, then i say drop it. think strategically, you want to have the best application _possible_.

by the time you apply, it'll probably be an even more competitive class than this one. plan for that~

Man, I wish we had Caribbean dental schools. 😎

I don't know, though...I went to the prof's first two study group sessions (to prep. for the first test; that really helped), and he was pretty adamant about people signing in at each session. Plus, I go to the group tutoring (done by a different prof.) every Tuesday and Thursday for two hours each day, so maybe he'll bump me up if I'm pretty close to a B. Of course, I've heard lots of horror stories about how he is pretty hard-@$$ about not nudging grades a bit.

Maybe I should just film hardcore porno for a living. It's not like I don't have the body for it.

j/k 😳

i dont think dental school is going to fall for some gpa booster classes. if u get a c....redeem yourself in upper division classes and dat

For me, taking the GPA boosters and applying after two years is kind of like the scene in the first Back to The Future film where the Doc is going to ride in the Delorean for the first time EVER. It's risky, and there's no telling what will happen or how many thousands of dollars I'll lose...but, by God, I'm going for a ride.

I'm in the exact same situation as you are. Henry. I'm only getting around C or C+ in Chem 2 currently. Which is unfortunate because I had an A+ in Chem 1.

I got Cs in both Chem I and Chem II, and Organic I !!
I did really well in the DAT, tho.
I also made up with other science classes
I got into Maryland, BU, VCU and UF

Good luck!

yes...as i posted before, I had 4 C's on my transcript and still got accepted to two schools w/ 8 interview offers. It's all about how you bounce back. thats why i like dentistry over general medicine...dental schools give you a chance to show that you can overcome adversity and improve your own academic standing...it seems like med school you cant have one pimple on your record w/o being thrown in the "REJECT" pile.

1 C+ chem 2 and 1 D+ in Genetics (BLah 😱)... no biggy

just find some easy classes to cushion ur gpa

I am curious; did you have great DAT scores? Or did you make up the science classes?
