Hi guys, how do you think the 2008 entering class (applying in 2007) will be? Do you see the competition increasing or regressing?? thanks!

Honestly... No one knows. Who knows, it could be really competitive or might not, we will find out.

It's hard to predict with 100% certainty as to how competitive this coming application cycle will be, but given the trend in the last few years... expect it to be pretty competitive.

The competiton for dental seats follows a pretty weird schedule of fluctuation, so we'll probably just have to wait.

For instance, competition dropped through the floor in the late 80's/early 90's due to HIV outbreaks in clinical settings.

A dentist I know who got in around then had a 2.3gpa and 15's-16's on his DAT 😉

I believe the latest figures are predicting the next cycle will have a 87.563 competivity index.

Rookie mistake, ya hate to see it.

The right move would have been to link him to goatse (or lemonparty, or tubgirl, etc...)

My guess? More competitive than ever.

it's only going to get worst!...however, i think pharm school is going to become the "new" dent school in a couple of years.

meatspin woulda been better

even if the new dental schools were opened by next year, i think it'll remain competitive for the near future.

I don't see it getting any easier and can definitely see it getting harder. Dental school seems to be the "thing to do" right now,....or does it just feel that way because I'm addicted to SDN like your averge crack ***** is to a spoon full of smack??? Who knows?

agreed,

more and more people are knowing about the goodness of a dental career. many premeds are getting over the ER/House/Gray's Anatomy glamor and opting for more practical routes such as dentistry. given the current state of the american economy and the gradual decrease of jobs that offer employment and financial security, dentistry will most likely be like you said "the right thing to do" 👍 .....let's count our blessings we made it

I'd say a little of both. But I have heard stories of people changing career paths because of the competition. It's going to get harder by the year, new schools or not.

I would say from this past cycle's trend that acceptance into d-school will continue to get more competative this year. For instance at Case the year I got in, 2005, there were ~2400 applicants. This past cycle our admissions office reported the number of applicants to be ~3000. Granted I'm sure it will level off eventually but who knows when.

it depends really! some schools' ave. GPA drops and DAT drops. I know my school's average GPA and DAT drop a bit this year.

It will be the most competitive ever. If you read ADEA studies, there has been a steady upward trend in admissions stats. Also, keep in mind that there will be an additional influx of applicants from Canada, specifically the province of Ontario. This is because next year there are almost double the number of graduating students from Ontario Universities. This was caused by a ripple effect when the province got rid of Grade 13 in high school.

So expect a lot of Canadians who can't get into Canadian Schools with a 3.9 GPA (which is possible next year) to trickle down into the states. They will provide some hefty competition as well.

I think we have had or are currently in a very small spike in overall numbers. The new schools (MD, DO, Dental) that are opening will probably not let the numbers get too high. As much as we all love dentistry...med schools will still get the higher GPA students and a lot of new med schools are opening. This will allow for more people to do what they really want instead of picking dentistry as a second choice because they couldn't get into med school.

Some of the new schools are:
MD - Florida International Univ - 2008
MD - Univ Central Florida - 2008
MD - Touro/NJ - 2008
DO - Touro/Harlem - 2008
DO - Pacific Northwest/Yakima - 2007
MD - Michigan State University/Grand Rapids - 2008
MD - University of Arizona/Phoenix - 2007

new branches:
MD - University of Cal Merced
MD - University of Cal Riverside
MD - University of Texas El Paso
DO - Vista/Colorado
MD - OHSU/Eugene
DO - MSUCOM/Detroit

These are just some schools that I found after a quick search, and I know some preexisting schools are increasing enrollment to help further alleviate the medical shortage. And then of course, you have the new dental schools that are opening over the coming years.

edit: I forgot about pharm schools....about 10 of those are expected to open in next few years. With the demand for pharmacist, many people may choose that over dental school. It probably won't have the same trickle down affect of new med schools opening though.

Too bad the DAT was on a different point scale during the time that you mentioned, kekekekekekekkeke.

you got new applicants applying next year, and you got the reapplicants applying again and again until they get in. It could get more competitive, but can it really get that much more competitive than what it is now? Nobody knows for sure.
