Hi guys,

In case I don't match this year in rads, I wanted to reapply as into anesthesia next year. I've always loved anesthesia and for the longest time could not make up my mind (I still kinda regret only applying into 1 specialty).

I know that as a reapplicant, I won't be as competitive. However, does anyone know what are my chances of matching into a cali program if I reapplied next year (UCI, Cedars, USC, LLU, Davis)?

My stats:
Step 1: 243
Step 2: 267
3rd year grades: 1 honor in medicine
Extra curricular: president of anesthesia interest club in preclinical years

Point 1: Radiology had about 90 empty spots last year, the odds of someone not matching into it are low

Point 2: Go away

Your chances are very, very poor at either rads or anesthesia. You have effectively eliminated two of the R.O.A.D. specialties due to your sub par USMLE scores. Good luck in family practice pal... IF they will take you that is. 🙂

Glad you don't have to study as much now. Funny stuff.

This highly depends on where you went for medical school.. AMG / FMG?

I am amg at mid tier medical school. Location for me is very important as I have family obligations. I am looking for an honest assessment guys. And the open slots for rads were in at programs in the middle of nowhere. I am restricted to the southwest because of family obligations.

WTF do you want us to say to you? Do you think we have some sort of secret forumla which calculates your chances of matching based on USMLE scores and rotation grades? Or maybe a crystal ball?

I have interviewed candidates with higher scores than your who we did not rank and we have also ranked candidates very high with scores two standard deviations below yours. Your scores will get your foot in the door, just don't be a tool at the interviews and you'll match somewhere. If your restricted to a tiny area, you will have to be even LESS of a tool than otherwise required at other programs.

To the rest of the future applicants, stop posting your damn USMLE scores and hoping for magic eightball type answers regarding your chances. If you can't truly figure out that you will probably match with a 270 step one then you most likely have some serious social/common sense deficienies and will NOT match.

I never ever understood the purpose of people asking me my step1 board scores or step2. The purpose of those exams are for LICENSURE and LICENSURE only. It is not meant to rank one student over another for residency selection purposes. If you ask me, the guy with the lowest score is the smartest since he figured out how to pass the darn thing without even trying. That is like someone asking me what my anesthesia written board scores were. How ridiculous would that be?

Sounds like you have a social deficiency. I don't know where all this hostility is coming from since I am asking for an honest opinion. And my question was not if a program is going to rank me after an interview. I was asking based on my stats would these schools (Loma Linda or UCI etc) are reach, target or safety schools if I were a reapplicant. Will I even get interviews in California?

If you don't know then say don't know. Don't give me bull**** about social deficiencies when you clearly are an *******.

I'm trying to think of an appropriate response here, but am having a hard time while laughing so loudly.

Oh, I got it: Welcome to SDN Vertigo100, you're off to a fantastic start.

Nope welcome to the anesthesia subforum where people are butt hurt about board scores.

You'll be fine.

Lots of people have a change of heart during their PGY1 year and realize that anesthesia is the best specialty. Changing your mind doesn't make you weird. You should have no trouble finding a spot at a good program.

He's just having fun with you. It is just really common for people to post astronomical step scores and then ask everyone if they think they will have a problem matching. The truth is, we don't know, but your board scores are extremely high, so you probably will. He was actually being honest. The only reason you would not match would be if you have some personality issue that you don't have self awareness about. Some people have a knack for treating others poorly and have no self awareness that they are perceived that way. If that is you (doubt it), then you may have a problem. Otherwise, you will enjoy being a radiologist.
Good luck.
