Just out of curiosity, how do most schools reject the applicants in which they have no interest? Do they tend to immediately send notification of rejection to the applicant? Or do they tend to move on and let the applicant figure it out on their own in the spring? For ~$150 to apply to each school, I would assume the courteous thing to do would be to notify applicants of their rejection.

Rejections are mostly send out by email, sometimes via paper mail.

Most schools rejects you during the app cycle as soon as they made a decision. Some will altogether send out all rejections towards the end of cycle (around May).

There are also some silent rejections, but even that they usually send you a formal decision email around July.
