Many of the dental schools around the country are located in urban areas, which equates to being a little scary for a young family. I have read many people who say that they live outside the city to stay away from that. That makes sense. My question is how far away do you live and what have your experiences been by doing this? I am looking at the possibilities of attending Temple in 2007. I have an option to stay in a place for free near Doylestown, which is about 35 miles to the north. It is a nice area, but I am not completely convinced if it is worth the extra commute. Tell me what you think.

I have heard that Temple is located in an especially scary neighborhood, so that is reason enough to live far away from there.

Dental school involves early mornings and late nights, due to having to work at the lab. I had colleagues who drive >1hr to school, and they got very tired and grumpy when the weather was bad... but still graduated no problems.

If you're going to Temple, I'd advise living a little closer. There's plenty of nice family areas just outside the city. Yes, free is good but traffic into the city is atrocious. I live about 35 minutes south of philly and when I went to my interview it took about an hour and 15 minutes. 😱 I couldn't imagine that every day, especially with the length of the commute. And I can't say that the roads in PA are the best in winter. 🙄

Just my thought. Good luck deciding.

I live 29 miles from Temple and on a good day we can get to class in 35 minutes and on a bad day it takes about an hour and ten minutes. I live that far away because I have a family and needed a good safe area with good schools. Doylestown doesn't have any freeways between it and campus which could make your commute a bit longer, and if no one else lives near you then carpooling would not be an option and at $3.00+ a gallon gas expenses will add up quick. It could be done but you may find affordable options much closer to campus, but of course not too close.

i live across the street from school.
i look out my bedroom window and there it is.
sometimes i think it watches me while i sleep :scared:

don't worry it does 🙂

personally i wouldn't recommend living more than 10-15mins away from school. just for one reason. if you live too far you will not be movtivated enough to drive back to school to do extra work.. i mean hell the 10min drive sometimes is not motivating at all

Not to mention, living close to school (5-10 min.) gives you some nice options, ie. drive home for lunch...saves lunch money every day and you might be able to take a little power nap.

How much stuff is there to do at the school after class? Just studying? I figure my best option is traveling that far is to take the train so I can study on the way. I have been taking the bus to work sometimes this summer to test it out. It's not too bad, but some days are worse than others. Thanks for all the comments.

no studying is the least of it..

its mainly class work that is pain in the arse.. i would love to get a hand piece installed in my condo. but that isn't happening 🙁
