How good is CCOM?

Hi guys,

I was trying to find how good is Midwestern CCOM, IL (education/D.O. program)? I read online that D.O. schools don't have ranks. I just want to know, how is CCOM rated? Considered among top schools in the country, in middle, or bottom?

DO schools don't have rankings. That being said, the older schools are all really good. CCOM would be one of those.

CCOM is rock solid, IMO. Rotations, location, history, board scores, match lists, etc. Solid.

Cost is the downside, but that's the case at many medical schools.

D.O. schools may not be ranked compared to each other, but PR has ranked MSUCOM #7 among all schools this year for primary care.

which is meaningless because that ranking is just based on the percentage of med school graduates from that school who go into primary care. obviously, more DOs go into primary care than MDs.

So you're saying that a larger percentage of Harvard grads (#15 for primary care) than Drexel grads(unranked for PC) go into PC specialties? This just doesn't seem right, there has to be more to it than that.

Check the matchlists for a starting point, and then you'll know if that is as big a role as some people think.

So you're saying MSUCOM is better than Harvard Med? I mean, MSU has a higher PC rank than Harvard, so it must be a better school. I know if I wanted to do primary care I would DEFINITELY go to MSUCOM over Harvard...NOT

Med school ranks are meaningless. Even the research ranking is mainly based on how much $$ the school gets for research. That's why no DO schools are ranked in research because DO schools get little research funding.

Sure, there is more to the PC ranking and Research ranking than # of grads going into PC and $$ for research, but those are the biggest factors that make them up.

CCOM is good ... very good. It's just a great medical school, osteo or allo, period.

I think it's a pretty good school. It has been around a little while too, since before something called the flexner report 😉

I live about 20 minutes away from CCOM. Saying that it is a well respected school is an understatement, especially in Illinois. Residency directors at Illinois hospitals look very kindly on CCOM grads, just look at the school match lists.

CCOM is probably one of the toghest DO schools to get in to, next to MSU and I think CCOM gets the highest number of applications(??). Their residency placements have high numbers of grads in non-primary care specialties as well.

I'm going to visit there in August! My best friend lives in Chicago, so I definitely want to visit and apply. 🙂 She's heard of all the medical schools and says they're all great! I'm excited! 😀

i have had the fortunate ability to take some of the classes with their med students and get a feel for the school in general and the school is awesome!!

I have a feeling this school is one that receives many apps with similar #s, though, which means the admissions is probably really subjective. It probably comes down to the wire for sooo many ppl and many qualified applicants get left out. I think that's how it tends to be at schools that receive SO MANY applications...

You are correct that they match into some fantastic positions in IL however this last year's class was VERY primary care oriented. But it's just a prime example of how match lists reflect the desires of the class. Of those primary care positions quite a few are very good positions.

Damn, you're right. Sorry! It must have been 2008 that I saw. I figured it would be the same considering the high academic rigor of the school. Plus, I though CCOM received the most apps. but PCOM would make sense. Thanks!

When I had my interview at CCOM (Oct. 2008), Wendy Kupinsky (admissions counselor), told us they received ~5000 applications thus far (I'm assuming she included primary and secondary).
In any case- CCOM is a great school but has a horrendous schedule. In the end it prob. pays off.

The number of applicants to DO school will only increase every year. A lot of premeds that just missed the mark for MD school will be filling these schools. I can't wait to see the average mcat and gpa of the top DO schools this year. I wouldn't be surprised if they went up a couple points on the mcat.

if you get a chance, i *highly* recommend attending one of their "health career professions" day. they are usually in october and april. they are a great way to see the school and talk to current students 🙂

I was accepted to CCOM, but ended up choosing PCOM due to location only. I actually like Chicago better as a city, but it just made more sense for me to stay in Philly. In all other aspects, I felt they were pretty equal. I was really impressed with the facilities, the curriculum, the rotations, and the students/interviewees at the school. Overall, I had a great interview day, which says a lot since it was 12 degrees when I pulled into the parking garage. 🙂

CCOM is one of the best schools in the country. I read in a magazine about a medical student who chose it over an MD program.

Very good.

I got into my instate MD school and I never got off of the "pre-interview waitlist" at CCOM. While I wouldn't chose it over my school (I pay 18k tuition and my rent is around 400 a month), it is a solid school with a solid rep.
